My idiot cats bring live, unharmed mice into the house from outside,
and promptly lose them to the many small hiding places in the house.
Every now and then, I notice one of my cats getting all tensed up
listening intently by the fridge or other nooks and cranies in the
house. So thanks to my cats, now I have mice living in my house! I'd be
mouse-free if it wasnt for the damn cats! Has anybody heard of anything
so stupid?!

Sure have! When mine were able to go out, they brought in every kind of
small critter, almost always unharmed. Some of them got loose, some I took
away and released outdoors, and some they killed and ate. The ones that got
away on their own didn't stick around long with seven cats roaming the
premises.

A long time ago I heard a commotion at the front door and when I
opened the door to see what it was the cat chased a mouse into the
upright piano. I left the front door open and closed the other doors
to the living room. Eventually the mouse left. At least I never saw
or smelled any more evidence of mouse, living or dead.

What's stupid is you let them outside in the first place since you know they
do this.

I love my cats., I'd never keep them prisoner in the house.

Okay, I won't get into this debate with you. Suffice to say you'll just
have to live with a rodent infestation.

Once a cat is let out of the bag (house) it's impossible to make them
indoor cats again. They'd go completely nuts.

Please, Jill, let's not start up the old indoor/outdoor
controversy again! Opinions seem to be quite evenly divided
here, and neither side is likely to convince the other.

My apologies, Evelyn. But I'd killfiled this person a while back... did you
read the newer post about leaving his cats alone, unattended for 4
weeks????? Sheesh.

Live angry birds. Lizards. Et al.
Birds would be delivered to my bed if I wasn't up yet.

Ah yes! How well I recall the early morning a cat jumped up
on the bet, but instead of cuddling, I was treated to a loud
"squawk!" in my ear, as the captive bird escaped. (Took me
nearly an hour of chasing it from light fixture to drapes to
window, before I was able to shoo it out the door.)

Yoda brought a small rabbit inside back in his younger days. Oddly
enough, the rabbit was completely unharmed. He was carrying it by the
scruff, exactly like a mama cat carries her kittens. We about never
caught it.
If it gets to be a real problem, you can always close your kitty flap
and make them check their prey at the door. You can tell when they've
got something in their mouth trying to bring it it. They have their
head bowed down at a weird angle.

I had a couple who specialized in "bringing 'em back alive",
too - only they chose those little grey California fruit
rats - mice are smaller. I once had one living in my
portable dishwasher (surviving happily on catfood) for
MONTHS, until I moved and the disturbance of having the
dishwasher carried from the house flushed out the rat!

Stinky pretty much has a catch-and release policy, too. They simply
are not as much fun dead as alive. ;)

The stupid thing, dickhead, is that you let the cats roam.
HTH.

Yeh: it's people going away for a month and leaving a window open so the
cats can go in and out and bring in more mice. MLB

Let's see, my cat's catch & release scheme has treated me to:
Rabbits
Chipmunks
Mice
Squirrels
Lizards
Toads
Slow worms
Siberian Hamsters (AKA rats :)
Various birds
...
Of these, chipmunks are the trickiest little suckers to recapture, and I
swear I can the cats laughing at my feeble hunting skills :-)
