Ka' Shay started going in heat today.  She is the most talkative furball
that we have ever had when it became this time.  The poor thing does not
know what to do with herself.  Off course it is a load of entertainment for
the boys; who are all fixed.  They are trying to figure out what her problem
is.  She is doing her best to get their attention and they could care less.

A little help please it has been almost 8 years since the last female
( LIMO ) went into heat.   What to expect from this furball.   Does someone
have the links to some articles I can look at to refresh my mind.  I am too
tired and worn out to go searching my self.  Too much stress and problems
going on here.    I never had to worry about this at the shelters the
furballs were taken care off ASAP back than.

All I can offer is sympathy and stay inside Ka' purrs.  I have always
wondered about small time breeders that have only one or two queens that
they keep in the house.  At least you don't have a tom spraying everything
in sight to get her attention.  (Or maybe you do, check outside)

Nope no other cats in the yard the pack would be having a fit if there was a
intruder.
She stays inside no matter what  when I am going outside I put here in the
cat room and lock the door till I get back inside

Two things: Try to schedule her spay for when she goes out of heat. The
surgery is easier on the cat when she's not in heat, and easier for the vet
to do (and usually cheaper). Also, try not to let her keep coming into heat
before getting her spayed. It can lead to a very serious condition called
cystic ovaries.

How long does a normal heat last.  We were planning next week to have it
done.  I don't mean to sound like a snob  but the price really does not
matter to us.  We will pay anything to make sure the furballs are taken care
off and are ok.

Sorry I should know all of this but I am so worn out from recent events that
I am finding that common knowledge is slipping my mind. Some would call it
old age I call it worn and frazzled out :-(

First heat won't last more than a week. Usually less.

Hi Matthew,

Hope that stress doesn't last for long.

We've only had one cat go into heat. She was pregnant when we found her,
then after the kittens were a couple months old she went into heat.

It was probably a couple of weeks of her obviously in heat, she was so
restless. She was in constant motion -- kneading and scratching and
yeowling.

A little over 3 weeks later, we took her and the kittens in for spays
and neuters. We were told after the operation she was still in heat,
although her outward symptoms were gone. They charged about $15 extra,
not too much.

The girls had more pain than the boys after the operations, so just make
sure you get pain medication for her for at least the first day. We used
a clinic recommended by a local rescue instead of our regular vet
because we had a crowd to take in, but they did not offer pain meds. We
didn't think to ask and were so sorry we didn't.

Hope all goes well,

Rhonda

Hi Matthew:

Just a word about heat spells.  Although they don't last long,
sometimes, cats can go repeatedly into heat, one spell after
another, so one thing you might want to do is watch carefully
for any signs of the spell ending so that you can take advantage
of what might be a short window of opportunity and whip her in
to TED so that he can whip it out before she goes back in heat
again.  Mind you, I'm gathering this is her first heat spell, and it
doesn't go that way so often on the first spell, but it can do,
I've seen it happen with Luthien when she was young.

Good luck!

I think it varies a great deal. I think Sugar's first one was about 3 days.

I could only stand one heat from Sugar. Holy Moly. Get that girl in.

We are already scheduled next week as soon as her heat is over

Let me rephrase that WE WERE already scheduled for next week before she went
into heat.  That is why my subject header
says what is says

Hehe don't worry, it's like a woman's period, she'll be ok in about a
week.  Good thing you're getting her spayed.

Poor thing must be going nuts.  And it must be hilarious to watch the
boys going "What the heck is HER problem?"

I remember when I first brought Mischief in from the big OUT, she
started rolling over and over and crying, I thought she was in heat.
Two days later I took her to the local spay/neuter clinic.  After they
knocked her out and shaved her they found her spay scar.

She had been crying cause she wanted to go back outside.  And now she
was pissed off cause her beautiful belly fur was all shaved.

sheesh,

Kristi

Rumble is getting over excited; he is fixed, because of her antics and
is showing some aggressive behavior towards the other cats.  I have had to
use the compressed air ( which I don't like to use ) in his general
direction  up in the air so the noise scared him to get him to knock it off.
When he was on diazepam he would get mean sometimes ( zone out is a better
description)  and pin the other cats and would not let go till one of us
intervened.  He is doing it now towards her and spirit.  I thought he tried
to mount her  but I have read that sometimes neutered cats will do this.  He
is definitely a fur nut
So when she starts; which has not been much today, I put her up till she
calms down.  The strange thing is that limo whop wants nothing to do with
any of the cats have been letting her curl up with her.
