Stupid, stupid cat

CJ is not playing with a full deck.

Last night, I walked into the computer room to find Fleagor in my
chair. After I evicted him and sat down, he jumped up in my lap, then
lay down between the keyboard and the table edge - head to the left
and back to me - legs along the sides of the keyboard (he's a *large*
cat).

After a few minutes, CJ came in and jumped up on the table behind
Fleagor.  He sniffed Fleagor's butt, then settled down to clean
himself.

You must understand that while Fleagor is a rather peaceful cat, he
*is* the alpha male and rightfully expects a certain respect from the
other cats.  CJ picked fights with every one of the other cats shortly
after I got him - the ones he beat up hate him; the others mostly
dislike him.  He usually has sense enough to stay out of Fleagor's
way, but not lst night.

Fleagor took CJ's casual behavior inside *his* personal space as an
affront to his dignity.  He raised his head and looked at CJ for
several seconds.  Suddenly it dawned on CJ that he had done something
terribly stupid.  About a second later, Fleagor was still lying on the
table, but facing the other way with his back to the keyboard, a tuft
of white hair in his teeth, and a tuft of black hair in his claws.  CJ
was somewhere else.  Shortly after that, Fleagor wanted his belly
rubbed.  I later found CJ moving from a high shelf to a hiding place
in a corner of a closet.

I really dig the name 'Fleagor'.

Any comment on how you came up with the name?

There used to be a web comic (single panel) called "The twisted Tales
of Fleagor".  That Fleagor was green - mine is gray.  It's Igor with
fleas (except I keep him dosed with Frontline, so he really doesn't
have those).

Awww, poor CJ! He just wanted a peaceful moment next to you. And he
momentarily forgot that he has to watch out for and kowtow to the house
bully. Hope he was able to nurse his wounded dignity back to health.

Fleagor is not a bully - he even stands aside to let the other cats
eat first.  As far as I know, he has had only three fights - all three
with CJ.  Normally, his very presence *prevents* fights because the
potential fighter can tell that Fleagor is bigger than he is.  I have
seen him chase off an invading feral tom simply by sitting down where
the tom could see him and facing the intruder.

Splodge somehow manages to utterly terrify most other cats, despite
being pretty small and with very short legs.  I think it's mainly
because strange cats have real difficulty working out what planet he
comes from, let alone whether he's a cat or not.  See the photos on
my site: http://www.purr.demon.co.uk/Cats/ .  When he first arrived
(as a kitten who would still just about fit in one hand) he decided
to occupy the sunniest armchair, and hardly budged from it for a
week while our six others, all at least four times his size, were
scared to even come into the same room.

Well, he looks a little like our Himalayans, which is logical since
they are part Persian. However, WooToo thinks he is a guinea pig and
she does know what she is talking about, being completely unaquainted
with guinea pigs. But that's what she thinks he is.

Something about the set of his mouth and his face in general reminds me
of Maggie May, or sixteen-year old Himalayan retired mommy cat.

Isn't that funny how cats do that? In my house, Smudge is the top cat
when it comes to food. Nobody tries to take food from her, but she can
horn in on anyone else's plate and take their food.

Roxy is #2 in the food hierarchy, and Licky is the low guy. So Roxy
will horn in on Licky's food, but he won't do it to her.

But when they're just hanging out, not eating, then Smudge is afraid of
Licky. She'll take alternate routes from one place to another to avoid
going past him. She'll sit on a high surface and glower at him if he's
in the room, but she won't challenge him directly. I've sometimes gotten
up in the morning to find tufts of Smudge fur all over the living room,
presumably from a confrontation with Licky that came to blows. He's
not afraid of getting right in her face in any situation that doesn't
involve food.

Roxy just kind of sits those conflicts out - she hangs out in her corner
and watches, but never gets involved.

Our house doesn't have a strong "parental" figure like Fleagor to keep
the peace - that is, unless you count me. :)

Ah.   He has "presence".

Its a good thing to have an acknowledged alpha in any pack and or clowder.
It seems to make every one calmer and more relaxed.

I think so too - for being so large, my clowder is mostly peaceful.
There are a couple of bullies, but I have seen Fleagor charge up to
them when they were trying to start a fight - his presense prevents
violence.
