Purrs for kilikini

Today is the day Christy (kilikini) she gets all her pre-op tests and
tomorrow she's scheduled for surgery.  She called the other day and she's
scared spitless.  (Who wouldn't be?)

She's going to be in for a long haul recovering from this massive surgery.
Along with the tumor they are going to remove 4 ribs and her left breast and
"rebuild" using muscle tissue from her abdomen.  She will pretty much be out
of commission for about a year.  That's why her MIL bought that motorized
recliner for her.  On top of everything else, her husband has only been
working about 2 days a week and he's paid by the hour. (He's in
construction.)

Get those furry felines' engines revved up, please.  She needs some purrs!
I'm expecting to hear from her in a week or so, once they've released her to
go back home.

Purrs for Kili. She has a long road ahead of her and I can't even
express my admiration and respect for her at her courage.
I hope she serves as a role model for some of us who don't realize how

What a horror story.... If you have their number can you call the DH
tomorrow for an update when the cut & paste is finished? We'll be purring
hard here for no further complications and a super quick, painless recovery.

Purrs from Mrs Cat should be on their way tomorrow, after she comes home :-)

Meantime, have some purrs from all the cats I meet in the street, and
very occasionally at work :-) :-)

She won't be home for at least a week.  They had to drive to the Mayo Clinic
in Jacksonville for the surgery.

I don't have the number of the hospital in Jacksonville.  I only have her
home number.  Recovery time is estimated at about 1 year.

Here's the clinic's number:  (904) 953-2000

(I googled.)

Hope she does well, I've been thinking of her.

Jill, I just saw Kili's surgery date post tonight, so I know
I am too late to reach her, but I sent her a private e-mail
anyway.  In it I included my cell phone number and told her
and her husband to call me anytime day or night if they
are in any kind of trouble, or just need some answers.

Can you please convey this info to her husband, so that
he knows?   He might be able to get to a internet cafe or
something and check that e-mail.
I can't do much for them from the West Coast,
but sometimes it can be very heartening just to
have access to a resource at times like this.
Thanks in advance, Jill.

I had a very serious discussion with Sam last night and explained to him
all that Christy is about to go through.  He is sending his very best,
post-operative, been there, done that, rib resection and thoracic
reconstruction purrs.  He said he is going to be the head purrleader of
our household where Christy is concerned and I'm sure he'll get lots of
rumbly purrs headed her way.

Thank you for posting this.  I wish her the best for her surgery.  It
sounds so radical, I'm surprised she can get out in a week.  I'm sure
it'll take much of that year to recover!  I hope and hope that she'll
get through it okay, and that they get all of that tumor.  For this to
be what they consider a borderline cancer still sounds incredible.

It's relatively rare but known to recur with (unfortunate) frequency.  This
is why they are treating it so aggressively.

Actually I did a bit of extra reading on it, and it seems that
there is a rate of recurrence, less than 30% usually, but
that after any resection or treatment of single recurrence,
it is usually gone for good.  It does not tend to recur
repeatedly, which is good, and very unlike typical
malignant cancer.  That is likely why it is not usually
considered as a form of cancer.

Huh... that's not what the surgeon told her re: recurrence rates but he's
probably erring on the side of caution.  I certainly hope so!

The surgeon told me that it comes back in 70% of the cases unless they do
radical surgery and remove the entire sarcoma site.  Dr. TerKonda and Dr.
Odell hopefully went way beyond the margins to get the tumor out.  We'll
know more tomorrow when the pathology report comes in.  If any of the tumor
extends past the margins of the excision, then they'll go back in and take
out another rib or more muscle tissue.

I'm hoping they got it all........... I do NOT want to do this again.  It
really kind of stinks.  (Literally, I haven't showered in a week.  - That
was an attempt at humor.  <g>)

Welcome back.
Did you receive my e-mail?

Hair:
How about this... get one of those dry-cleaning bags
that they put over a long dress, or a large lawn size
trash bag....seal up any little
holes, perforations with duct tape, except the
neck-hole....poke your head through, and have
someone seal it around your neck with, say,
masking tape, something easy to remove....
then sit upright on a stool in the shower while someone
washes your hair for you.

Best wishes for your recovery.

I'm sure that when they see you the kitties will revert to nurse cat mode.
I thought it was interesting that when I came home and crashed from my
lumpectomy surgery, the cats were sitting, one on either side of me when I
woke up.  Although they routinely walked all over me before the surgery,
they were careful not to walk on my chest.  I knew I had completely healed
when they started walking on my chest again.

Of course, this was day surgery and minor compared to what you have gone
through, but I hope your kitties will be as careful when they walk on you.

As for the hair, someone suggested cornstarch.  The stores might have kind
of dry shampoo specifically for that purpose, but, you'd probably be paying
more for the same stuff in a fancy package.

Emergency hair treatment tip

Rub talc (or get someone else to do it) into your scalp until it's well
in. Leave for 5 minutes (to let the talc absorb grease etc) then brush
(or get someone else to brush) out the talc. Messy as Hell have
newspaper or whatever to deal with the talc falling out.. don't wear
black as it will look as if you have the worse case of dandruff ever

Also (tip from Dave's experience) you could try sitting at the side of
the shower and getting someone to comb your hair back so it falls
behind you (This works best if you have long hair) and get the helper
to carefully wash yiur hair using the shower attachment the trick
apparently is to be in such a position the water runs into the drain
but doesn't soak you... a towel at the back of the wheelchair (If you
have one if not around your neck)) will catch any drips

Anyway I am glad to see you are home! And have set Fabulous Furballs to
full on purr mode for you!

Kili, welcome back! I didn't think you'd be able to type for quite some
time. I'm so glad you're home and feeling good enough to "talk."

You've been to heck and back, I hope you're just lounging around, eating
bon bons and watching TV. Have Nurse Pua do the cooking for awhile.

As for hair-washing, as a teen I used to use that spray-on shampoo once
in awhile, it's sort of like spraying talcum powder into your hair and
then brushing like crazy. Matter of fact, I think I used talcum a couple
of times. Haven't tried any of that for years though but it was a quick fix.

Hope you're feeling better every day!

Cornmeal rubbed into your hair and then brushed out should remove the
grease.  It'll make a mess so spread newspapers or something under
your chair and let someone else brush it out of your hair.

The water free shampoos out there do a good job of cleaning hair and getting
the "grease" out.   But there is just no substitute for warm water on your
scalp.  If you are physically able to lie back in a shampoo chair, I'd be
stopping by a shop for a shampoo in the way home.

I'm sure you will work out something that is possible for you.

I know I was able to "shower" in the bath tub not too long after I got home
from my surgery.  It was ok to remove the dressings and get the incisions
wet, as long as I didn't take a bath and soak them.  I had a bath chair that
sat in the tub so I could get in and out and not have to stand as well as a
flexible hose thing with a shower head on the end so I could control the
water.

Hiya Kili

Just wanted you to know that here in England we're all purring like mad for
your recovery.
I'm sure the furbabies will be appreciating your scent at its proper
strength, they don't like soapsmells much (usually, of course there will
always be exceptions among the contrariblighters) :)

Anything to keep your spirits up! Remember that your personal attitude
is key in a successful recovery.
We'll keep purring for you!

I'm surprised to see you posting so soon, I hope this means you're

need it or not. ;-)

Kili, I do so hope they got it all and you don't have to have any more
surgery. You've been through so much and you are so brave! You are an
inspiration!
We are sending you lots of healing purrs and best wishes,

I was given a "bed bath" where a nurse sponges you with soap all over (you
do your own private bits if you can) and then got rinsed with a clean cloth.
I felt so much better afterwards.  Could you have this done for you?
Some attempt should be made by the nursing staff to keep your skin clean
daily if you are not able to do it yourself.  What if bacteria gets into
your wounds if your skin and hair haven't been washed for a week?
It wouldn't matter normally, but it does if you have a surgical wound.

I think about you every day and send my best wishes.  Don't get despondent
if you don't feel well as soon as you want to.  It takes much longer than
you think to get over major surgery,  just take every day as a day nearer to
recovery.  One day you will be well again.

Wow! I'm way impressed.  Less than 1 week post-op and you're feeling up
to post!!

So happy to hear that you're up to wanting to post, but don't push
yourself too hard.  We'll be here whenever you can come back to us.

And yes, we're continuing the purrs until you tell us you don't need
them anymore.
