Update on Rusty

This afternoon I took Rusty to see TED about his bleeding gum. He was
diagnosed with Feline Resorptive Lesion. It is similar to  cavity.  The
cause  is unknown.  Tooth brushing would not  prevent it, which made me
feel less guilty of not brushing as frequnetly as I should. TED said it
is quite common and only  seen in cats. I read that these "lesions are
not cavities, which are very rare in cats." and "Resorptive lesions are
quite common in cats, with reports as high as 67 percent".  Also "As
with many ailments, the incidence of resorptive lesions tends to
increase as the cat ages". TED did say Rusty may have another lesion
later on.  Sigh!

Rusty's bleeding is confined to the tooth that has the lesion. That
tooth is very sensitive to brushing and to TED's prodding.  TED said he
is in pain. He also has another tooth that already lost the crown due
to lesion. TED said his gum is pretty good. Rusty  has to go in on
Monday to have the tooth extracted and TED will clean and polish all
his teeth. Because of his age,  gas will be used to put him under. But
that means he will wake up sooner and feel the pain. He will be given a
pain killer.  At first the lady at the front desk couldn't give me an
appointment till Dec. I was concerned because I don't want Rusty to be
in pain for that long. TED also said it needs to be done soon and he
squeezed him in for Monday.

So far this year has been a bad one for Rusty's health. First it was
urinary infection. Then it was ringworm. Now it is Feline Resorptive
Lesion. What next? The year is not over yet. The vet bills just keep
coming. Big sigh!

Purrs will be greatly appreciated.

Purrs coming up.  As our pets age, so do the vet bills come with regularity.
<sigh>
I am lucky, I am working, and I put a little away per month into a
veterinary fund at my bank.  I set it up several years ago, a separate
account to pay vet bills.  Funds go into it every month via a little from my
salary.  I hope it will be enough to pay any vet bills that Kitty FC or
Boyfriend might have.

Awww. Purrs for Rusty for all to go well. Don't ever feel guilty about
*anything* Winnie. You take really good care of Rusty.
Just a thought, but I imagine his tooth will be sensitive to hot &
cold, just like ours would. I wonder if it would help to be sure the
water in his bowl and his food is lukewarm.

Thanks Sherry. That is a good idea. I will warm up Rusty's food in the
microwave before giving it to him. He gets his water intake mainly from
his canned food and I add water to the food. The thing is often he take
a few bites, then walk away for a nap before coming back for more.  I
will have to keep re-warming up his food for him whenever I see him
going back to eat. It is only 3 more meals before he goes in for his
dental.

Purrs for a quick recovery. We do put a lot into our babies health but
they are such good kitties, how can we not.

My Muddy had to have two teeth extracted earlier this year, he's just
turned 12 and since the extraction he's been a new cat, eating much
better, shiny coat, back up to his fighting weight :-) Hope things work
out as well for Rusty
