Well, I went and picked up Barney ferret from the RSPCA today. He's come
home and so far, touch wood, introductions to Gertie are going well.
Whilst I was at the animal centre, I met Lassie.
http://www.llysnini-rspca.org.uk/documents/lsn060909lassie.pdf
She's a very sweet dog who is about the same size as my dog Bonnie. I'm
very torn.... I took her for a walk whilst I was waiting for Barney, and
she is very quiet but has a wicked sense of humour. I need another dog
like I need a hole in the head, and Robbie has a problem with dogs too.
She's an older lady who gets passed by every time, because she's not
much to look at, and she doesn't sell herself well.
So why am I planning on taking Bonnie to meet her tomorrow to see if
they get on?

Awwwww... she looks like a taller, thinner version of Bruno, a german

neighborhood. All the parents were afraid of him, all the kids loved
him, and he loved them right back.

My experience of ferrets is that they are gregarious and I would anticipate
no problem at all introducing Gertie & Barney. In no time they will be
sleeping all in a huddle ;-)

Because you are kind and you know what is likely to happen to her if no-one
adopts her. GSD/Collie is a lovely mix, you seem to get the best of both,

Thanks Tweed. That's just what I needed when I know I shouldn't think

Two dogs are not really any more trouble than one. At least get her away
from that awful place. Maybe you could find one of your friends that would
take her once she is safe if you really can't have another dog. She has a
lovely kind face and I suspect she will be no trouble whatsoever. It's not
as if she's been turned in because of behavioural problems, she was a
cruelty case and when cruelty cases get adopted they cannot believe their
luck and usually behave very well.
I leave it up to you. No pressure.

And boy, I love ferretone for introductions. For those of you who don't
know, Ferretone is an oil supplement for ferrets that they love, and is
rather smelly.
How to introduce 2 strange ferrets to one another and have them accept
each other in 10 minutes flat...
1) Liberally squirt ferrets in ferretone so they are covered.
2) Put them in an extra large cat carrier (neutral territory)
3) What them lick each other 1/2 to death.
Barney arrived at 4 pm this evening. It is now 11pm and I have just
checked both him and Gertie. They are curled up togther in a very nice
ferrety heap in a tiny box, snoozing away.
Barney has been renamed Barney Bear, because he looks just like a little
polar bear.
Jpegs will follow mid next week when my bro gets his posh camera out and
takes some photos.

The "ferrety heap" sounds wonderful. What powerful stuff. I know
your brother is extremely skilled at taking one eyed kitten pictures,
so I want to see how he does with smaller and speedier subjects.

Or if Helen has a less posh camera, I'm sure she could manage with sleeping
in a heap subject, regardless of their size ;)

Ferrets are so funny! John and I love looking at them in pet shops. They
are just too cute for words. And yes, they are stinky little critters.

I just completed my move from California to Arizona (more or
less) and found a PetSmart near me. (They carry a large
selection of supermarket catfood at twenty cents less per
6-oz. can than I was paying in California, BTW.) I'd never
seen a ferret before (I think someone here said California
didn't allow ferrets as pets). PetSmart had some right next
to the area where the cat rescue people were displaying
(adorable) kittens. I can see their charms - the fur looks
so SOFT, and they sleep all sprawled out on their backs like
a relaxed kitten. Are they as cuddly as kittens, too?

They are waaaay more naughty than kittens, if that is possible. They
make hooliganism a fine art form. ;o) They are cute and very cuddly - if
they deign to stay still long enough. ;o)
