I swear that Miss Lily Whiskers is a walking disaster. We're off to the
ER vet in about 20 minutes because she has just done something stupid to
her back leg and she can't put any weight on it at all and it is
swelling up.
I spoke to the ER vet, who recognised my voice (not a good thing ;o)).
She was the one who persuaded me to take Gertie ferret when HRFL Tiger
was at the ER there in July.
Purrs please that Miss Lily Whiskers is OK, and also please can I have
some purrs that I don't come home with another Ferret?
The RSPCA have also been in touch, and we collect Barney at 2.30pm
Saturaday....
Thanks

Oh, poor Lily!! She must have the same curse as Smudge, who is always
getting into trouble. I hope it's nothing too serious and she'll be OK!

Lots of purrs that it's nothing too serious for Miss LW.
Doesn't your own vet offer a 24 hour service, then?
Purrs too that you can resist another ferret. Two will be enough, believe
me.

There are only 2 ER vet practices in Cardiif, as all the vets in Cardiff
pool together so that they can all share facilities after hours. The one
vet is a large animal practice that deals with all the farm stuff, and
*will* see small animals out of hours too but prefers not to, and the
other is an out of hours, 24 hour emergency service that then faxes your
own vet with all the information for your follow up visit with your own
vet the next day. Our normal vet is a single man feline specialist
practice who I usually see in the gym about 7pm after surgery!
Another ferret duly resisted, although the vet did say that he spent
about 4 hours this morning playing with Gertie...

Miss Lily Whiskers has a severely sprained paw, and has pulled a tendon.
Doing something stupid no doubt....
She's been given pain-killer and anti-inflamatory, and my bank balance
has been given another hammering. :o(
Thanks for the purrs. :o)

I know that bank balance feeling from when I had a lot of dogs. I once said
to my vet "why don't I get my employer to put my salary into your bank
account instead of mine?" My dogs are all at the RB now, and I don't regret
a penny that I spent on their medical care. I don't want to get into that
situation again, though so although I have plenty of room for a few more
cats and could afford to feed them, I've decided that two is enough to
afford vets fees for whatever might happen to KFC and Boyfie.
Kitty is starting to ail as she ages and because I only have the two cats, I
can afford whatever treatment she needs.

I wouldn't mind so much, but I spent £140 there at 4pm today when I
picked Gertie up from being microchipped and spayed!!
As well as Cardiff's ER vet, they are the only vet within a 40 mile
radius that deals with exotics and are the South Wales ferret, rabbit
and avian specialist vets.
Michael the mogs regular TED said to me once that the minute he says to
his wife *I haven't seen X for a while", they end up coming through the
door. I *BET* he said something to his wife today about the Miles
felines. We haven't seen him for 3 weeks!!

It cost you 140 quid to have a ferret spayed and microchipped? ? <swoon>

Who are not taking advantage of their monopoly at all? Ahem. Seriously, I
think that is an extortionate price and as a matter of interest I might ring
my own vets on Monday and ask what they would charge for the same thing.
Boyfie's microchip cost me just over £20 a few months ago, so that leaves a
charge of more than £115 for Gertie's spay!
I consider my own vets to be quite expensive but they offer a 365 day/year
service, 24 hours/day and cover small animals, farm animals, and exotics,
including birds and reptiles. They also have great facilities, body
scanner, in house blood testing, all the bells and whistles including a
horse hospital. For this service I am prepared to pay a bit extra.

£25 for a microchip,
£94 for a spay,
£21 for vaccination....
I wouldn't mind, but I've microchipped & vaccinated more cats myself,
than I've had cooked dinners! But, ferrets need a parvo vaccination, and
if Gerties Jill jab that she had in July is anything to go by, I'm glad
to have paid the vet to microchip and vaccinate her!
I have it on good authority that if I were to get her spayed in Swansea,
the spay would cost around £45. But it's the trek back and fore to
Swansea. Still, Barney will be all fixed up, vaccinated etc when I get
him and I'm paying only £12 donation for him, so it swings in
roundabouts, and I like the vets where Gertie was done - they've done a
good job and know their stuff. Mind for their prices, they need to!
The mogs vet costs about 5-10% more than the vet I use for Bonnie (who
uses a different one to Gertie...), but he's a feline specialist and I
really like the personal approach. I rang this morning to check if he
wanted to do a follow up or not, and he always makes time to speak to me
and talk things through - you never feel like you're just another
client. Plus he REALLY knows his stuff.
I find it slightly disturbing that I am OCD enough that my animals all
go to different veterinary practices so that they see the most
appropriate health care professional. It took me 3 years to register
with a doctor and a lot of persuasion before I did that!

I sure know the feeling. Sometimes I thought the vet took extra good care
of our guys. The longer they lived the more car payments we covered for
him.
It was so bad at one point I kept the number of a veterinary orthopedic
surgeon handy. Between knees and hips we sure used them enough.
Extra purrs Lily. Careful where you climb and jump for a few weeks OK?

Purrs that Miss Lily Whiskers will STOP trying to dance the premiere
