I thought not taking a nap, taking some valerian root around 11PM last night
and having a couple of glasses of wine might help... I was still awake at
6AM when I forced myself to go to bed. Wasn't Persia's fault, either. She
finally joined me on the bed but then I was having nightmares. Dreams about
being forced to watch people being killed and yelling "No!". I don't
normally dream like this so I have no idea what brought this on, but I woke
up very, very disturbed.
Persia comforted me with her snuggles and her purrs and tapping me to remind
me it was time to feed her.
So much for my cure for insomnia.

I learned a long time ago that drinking any alcohol after Pam messes with my
sleep big time. And the more I drink the worse it is. I either sleep very
badly or wake up in a few hours and can't sleep at all.
Have you tried diphenhydramine? (Bindery)

Parse error. Pam messes with your sleep? :)
I agree that alcohol has a bad effect on sleep. It's weird because
alcohol is a depressant, but I guess it interferes with your brain's
ability to go into the right sleep stages or something. Maybe some
of the more medically or chemically knowledgeable can say more about
this?
A lot of people have a glass of wine before bed. I tried that for a
little while, but you're right - it's not really good for sleeping.
If I'm too wide awake at the appropriate hour for going to bed, I
find that 3mg of melatonin does the trick in about 20 minutes.

Guess I couldn't type or read last night. Should have read 8pm. Also
should have been benedryl.
And now after trying to send this I see I was messed over by the spell
checker. I doesn't approve of how I type times.

LOL, I knew it was some sort of typo, but I couldn't resist commenting
on the image of Pam messing with your sleep. I mean, her tales are fun
to read, but they don't keep me up all night! :)

Do you watch "Lost"? If so, that could account for the dreams.
Purrs for an end to your insomnia.

Thank you. I've never seen "Lost", I've no idea what it is. I did get in a
30 minute nap late this afternoon after Persia watched me bring in firewood
to dry out. I cleaned her kitty fountain and changed the filter. I washed
out her litterbox and put in a new liner and fresh litter in it. Did some
laundry. Cooked hamburger for dinner and managed to avoid giving Persia any
bits of it despite her IN MY FACE begging :)

I've had sleep problems myself, especially when I was off sick from work,
without any enforced routine I would stay up late, sleep late in the morning
and it just got worse and worse.
Try this for two weeks. Go to bed around 11. It doesn't matter if you
don't go to sleep, just tell yourself that you are resting and that is
enough. Even if you are still awake at 6 the first night, get up no later
than 8, set your alarm clock. Keep yourself as busy as possible all day,
cook, clean, whatever. Go out for a walk. Do not nap no matter how tired
you feel.
Go to bed at 11 that night and set your alarm for 7. Get up then no matter
how tired you are and whether you've slept or not. Keep busy all day again,
do not nap and go to bed at 11. Get up at 7 etc.
After a week of this you should be sleeping most of the night. After two
weeks your body clock should be reset.
Nightmares I can't help with. I suffer from them myself every night and if
you find a cure, please let me know.
