Severe insomnia

I just can't sleep anymore. With the colder weather and high heating
costs[1] it's pretty darned cold in here during the night. Oh, I'm
warm and toasty under my layers of covers, but I have 4 nightly
visiters that don't leave. One next to my head, one on one side of
the foot of the bed, one BIG one laying sideways from my knees to the
other visitor at the foot of my bed, and one on top of me no matter
how I turn. She hangs on and just re-adjusts. The big one is the one
that paralizes me, and I can't move his dead weight so I can get
comfortable around all of my bed guests.

[1] I only turn the heat down to 65F at night. Not as cold as I would
if not for them.  65F is just COLD COLD to them apparently.

BTW, speaking of energy costs, now that election day is over, have
any of you USA'ans noticed the gas prices creeping back up?  GO
FIGURE.  Bah. They're all corrupt.

This doesn't sound like insomnia to me. Insomnia is when you can't sleep
even when you could sleep. If I didn't already have insomnia and wasn't able
to sleep because of the cats,  I wouldn't hesitate to throw them out of the
bedroom. But I've learned to sleep in spite of cats. When I can sleep at
all, that is.

It was parody. Probably bad.

I'm not above closing the door on the furry ones when I really need a
good night's sleep. I miss them, but I'm ever so much more cheerful the
next morning, and I get some good cuddles while reading my morning email.

Have to say, it's not insomnia, it's catsomnia!  I couldn't sleep last night
but it's a frequent occurrence for me over the last 4-5 years.  No reason
for it, it just happens a lot.  (At one point my doctor prescribed Ambien
but they don't keep samples around and I can't afford the prescription.)  I
was tired but sleep wasn't coming.  Looked at the clock, it was 2:30AM.  I
hate tossing and turning; it makes me cranky and makes it even more
impossible to sleep because then I get angry that I can't sleep!  But I also
dislike taking valerian root or melatonin that late (or should I say that
early), although those do seem to help sometimes.

I finally got up, moved to the couch and read until I felt like I really
could sleep, about 5AM.  (Obviously this doesn't work well if you have to
get up and go to work in the mornings.)  Persia was snuggled up next to me.
Despite the fact that my thermostat is set anywhere from 65-68F, I got hot.
Persia is a warm furry sleeping pad so I can only imagine what your cats do
to you!  I had to turn on a fan in order to cool off and doze off.  I slept
about 5 hours which was better than I would have done if I'd just wound
myself up tossing and turning.

I did *not* take a nap today so hopefully I'll be able to get to bed at an
decent hour (say, by 11PM) and sleep through.  If I feel the need I'll take
a couple of valerian root capsules 30 minutes or so before to assist me.
Maybe I'll be able to sleep until 6AM.  I'm also sipping on some decent but
inexpensive wine right now which can't hurt :)

I take valerian root sometimes. I hate the smell of the capsule when
swallowing, but I don't breathe and swallow.  It helps some. I don't
sleep well, either. Nightmares plague me; not all the time, but they
come out of the blue, and then they're those continuing kind.  Then
they just go away and sleep is ok for a while.

They totally toast me sometimes!  LOL  Add to that hot flashes.
hehehe

I actually took two valerian root caps one night because one just
doesn't seem to affect me like some people have said it would.  Slept
like a baby all night.  I do that when I really *really* need to feel
sleep.  Sipping some vino or another alcoholic beverage helps, but
it's too easy to come to depend on it to sleep.  I know.

I'm glad to hear that your sleep pattern is getting back to normal,
Jill.  Then again, what is normal?  :))

Just four ounces of wine works for DH he says. Sometimes when he can't
get back on the day-sleeper schedule when he works the night shift, he
takes Tylenol PM. Just very occasionally though. Too much of it would
be hard on the liver.
As for me, I don't fret about it. Insomnia when you don't have to get
up early and go to work isn't really a problem. I just get up and do
something, anything, even housework or laundry or just watch TV or sew.
I kind of enjoy it sometimes.

Ask your doctor about Trazodone, it's an antidepresent, but can also be used to
treat insomnia. It is very cheap, I pay less than $10 for 30 tablets.

It always amazes me how much some people will allow their sleep to be
disturbed because of their cats.  My cats are not allowed in my bedroom.
They have beds downstairs, are allowed on the furniture, and can sleep on
the spare bed in the other bedroom if they want to.  There is no need for
them to crowd onto my bed at night and disturb my sleep.
If your cats are in your bedroom and keep you awake, then put them in
another room and close the door on them.  Unless you like to be kept awake,
of course!
I am lucky that both mine are no trouble at night.  They mainly sleep, and
if they don't, they never disturb me.
I really feel for Susan M with Otis, I don't know what I would do if I had
such a demanding cat.  Makes me feel lucky!

For me I don't mind if they come in a nuzzle me to get my attention or talk
to me to get my attention  hence my email address

Now if they start knocking things over being brats  or start to chase each
other over  me  than  they get chased out  that happens once in a blue moon.
They hate the door being closed but have learned about prying at the door
when it is closed.  I rigged a hair dryer up by the door with a remote
switch that was a AMFV moment
