I picked up a book called "Sleeping with Cats", which is an autobiography of
the poet and writer, Marge Piercy.  She had a strong-willed cat named Jim
Beam.  A couple of the quotes hit home, reminded me of Otis:

Among cats, he was Genghis Khan.  His energy was electric and his will,
absolute.  He never wavered from what he wanted.  He simply would not change
his mind and would not give up:  the image of a tyrant in the form of a
gorgeous sleek cat.  When you have a pet who is by all objective standards
bad, it is like any other love relationship with someone who is half crazy.
You cling to the good times and make excuses; you understand and understand.
Jim was wildly affectionate and absolutely ours.

AND ...

For Jim  Beam, punishment was attention, and he vastly preferred being
punished to being igonred ...[snip]... Certainly in the winters, he was a
better behaved cat, cuddling with the others, affectionate.  In the summer,
he was a heller.

We are in the winter phase with Otis and I have to say its pretty great.  He
cuddles all night and sleeps in as long as we will.  He is so incredibly
affectionate that I think I'm going to have to start wearing him out of the
house.  He follows me wherever I go and tries to sit on me.  He is
marvellous.  I know from experience that, come spring, the hell of early
morning wakings and loud disruptive behaviour starts again.  It's lucky we
live where the weather is mainly cold for about 8 months of the year!

That Jim Beam does sound a lot like Otis. LOL! How nice to discover that
you're not alone in living with such a demanding cat.

Hi Marina - yikes, my life went to hell in a handbasket for a couple of days
so I'm just back now.  Yes, Jim Beam, I have to say, takes the cake for
troublesome cats.  Otis is so ridiculously charming now though that you'd
never guess what he's capable of :-)

Oh, I hope nothing serious? Purrs for whatever happened!

Nothing serious - just RL and deadlines and such!  Thank you though :-)

Oh, he does sound like Otis! The cat you adore who also drives you batty.

I'm excited to hear that Marge Piercy has an autobiography. I'm definitely
going to request that one from the library!

I had never heard of Marge Piercy before, I'm sorry to say, but I enjoyed
the poetry that was interspersed in the book.  It was the title that caught
my eye at the book sale and I had to read it!  How can you not love an
autobiography peppered with cat anecdotes :-)  Have you read her fiction
too?

Oh, yes - she's written some classics. I was a big fan of hers in the
1970s and 80s, though I have to admit that I've lost track of what she's
been writing recently.

My two personal favorites of hers are "Small Changes" and "Woman on the
Edge of Time" - both oldies and probably dated, but still good reads.
But she's written plenty since then if you want something more recent.
A lot of people loved her book "He, She and It", which is a dystopian
futuristic sci-fi. It had a lot of interesting ideas, but I found it kind
of depressing. Another popular one is "Gone to Soldiers", which I own
but still haven't managed to read!

Well - she's had a very interesting life so far - the experimental
tempestuous life of an artist!

Thank you - I will put one on hold at the library and give it a whirl!

I'd really love to hear how you like it after you've read it!

I tried to put the autobiography on hold, but my library seems to
have done some sort of upgrade on their system (I noticed that their
website has been totally revamped and reorganized) and it no longer
recognizes my password. So I have to go in over the weekend to reset
my password - they won't do it over the phone.

Hi Victor!  Yes, my Otis cat is a silky soft purring machine :-)  I'm sure
your crew is starting to get a bit heat seeking now that its no longer 100
degree there too !

And thanks for asking - I started a short-term contract the day we got back
from Switzerland and the deadline was intense.  Lots of long hours PLUS I
had a concert to prepare for and perform.  After coming to a head in the
last couple of days, everythings all finished.  Yeah!  I'm finding that
being 40 (next week) and pregnant is pretty exhausting so I'm crawling to
bed at the earliest opportunity.  And I fell down the stairs on the
weekend - the hazzards of not being able to see your stomach anymore I fear.
Baby's ok.  Everything's ok.  The indignities of it all ...

Take care,

Yes, they are! I love winter time. :)

Well, it's not just the age and the baby, it's all the other things you
do and the people you take care of!

Whew! I'm glad to hear all is ok. Be careful with those stairs!
All is well here. I met a guy who owns a bikram studio in town and he
told me about a deal they had going: $28 for a month of unlimited yoga.
So I signed up! I've been going almost every day. It's a great workout,
but I'm not crazy about it. I much prefer my regular yoga studio. I find
bikram to be the anti-yoga. "You *have* to the pose this way". I'm
sorry, but if I choose to modify this asana to fit how my body is
feeling today, I will do so! So there! :)
Have you done bikram? What do you think of it?

I have done Bikram and like all yoga figure it has a lot to do with the
specific teacher; however, I had a few observations about it and wouldn't
rush right back.  I did a class with a very senior teacher at a yoga
convention and what struck me is that the class members were all very young
(all the older followers were too injured to do the class????).  The other
is that the instructor could only yell out some of the poses because, as he
said, his knees were too shot to do the poses.  I really was concerned when
this senior well known teacher instructed the class to lock the knee on
their standing leg while they did a leg lift.  A locked joint is a weak
joint.  Very dangerous - I'd rather work on the muscles in the leg.

There is Anusara in Austin - its the kind that I like - very strong but
alignment focused so you don't hurt yourself - John Friend, the founder, is
amazing with his therapeutic classes for helping people out with injuries
and problems.  Very spiritual yoga with a dedicated philosopher and
meditation guide too.  http://clearspringstudio.com/ don't know where this
is compared to you.  But you know, if you like your yoga studio - its just
matters that you're out doing your thing and enjoying it!!

I'm glad you're enjoying your yoga though - are you noticing that you're
getting stronger and more flexible?  And that you miss it when you don't do
it?
