For the six weeks or so during which we worked desperately to keep
Speckles alive and comfortable, Hobo "disappeared" -- not physically
but "spiritually". He gradually stopped coming into the living area
and began staying behind the toilet in either bathroom. Weird place
to choose, and difficult to give him attention, insulin injections,
etc. He had already begun avoiding Speckles like the plague.
Anywhere she'd been, he'd sniff and promptly leave, until he simply
stayed away from the rooms entirely. We accommodated him by feeding
him in the bathroom, moving his litter box closer, trying to coax him
out.
We don't think he was jealous of the round-the-clock care we gave
Speckles. He got his share of attention, his own visits to the vet,
as much loving as before. We wonder if he instinctively knew Speckles
was dying. Perhaps he felt maybe he'd "catch" her illness. Perhaps
after she went to the RB, he thought we'd make HIM "disappear" too.
Anyway, for the past couple of weeks, he's been coming out, a little
at a time. Day by day, he'd come to the kitchen, pass through the
living room, even to the room in which Speckles had stayed. NOW he's
back!!!! Once again he's on his perch watching the squirrels, birds,
and chipmunks from the window. Using his favorite blankie again.
Even startled me by jumping into bed with me!! Only for 5-10 minutes
but it's a start. The whole house is once again his kingdom. YAY!!!
My boy is home again!!

That so nice to hear about Hobo. (Sorry about Speckles, though.) I hope in
his own way, Hobo understands what happened and is making peace with it.
Purrs to your household.

Aww, how lovely, though heartbreaking at the same time. Poor boy, wonder
what he was thinking. I'm so glad he seems to have recovered.

Might not have been *thinking* so much as *smelling*? Or some other
kind of sensing? Maybe Speckles' being sick scared him and he wanted
to avoid all that.
But whatever it was, I'm glad he's taking possession of the house again
and enjoying being out with you!

I took Mrs Cat to TED for her annual booster vaccines. She was unusually
noisy, and distressed. There was another cat (doesn't usually bother
her) who was obviously on his way to The Bridge. She could definitely
sense that something was wrong there.

so glad to hear this. Maybe Hobo was just mourning Speckles in his own way.
I hope now that his spirit is back he will be happier.

When one of mine has been seriously ill, the others tend to give him/her
plenty of space. Instinct, self preservation, who knows. I know the ill
animal doesn't want the attention of its peers. They seem to want to be
alone that way. Even attention from us, they seem not to want to be alone
so much as to want a little space. For you to be there but not intrusive.
Maybe Hobo was carrying it a little far. Maybe Speckles let him know his
attention wasn't welcome.
So glad he is "back" and making his place again. Purrs for the loss.

I'm so glad :-)
Cats do mourn when others in the household cross over to the Bridge.
Way back when, when I had only two cats (can you believe that?), I had
Cosmo for just over a year when 19-year-old Tiki had to be sent gently
to The Bridge. All Cosmo would do for several days was play with
catnip toys, and sit and sulk in the doorway. Mind you, Tiki *hated*
other cats, but oddly, Cosmo loved Tiki. He was truly bereaved. Then
we adopted Internet, and after a week or two of hiss-spitting, Cosmo
was back to normal.
Glad Hobo is back.

They do. Miranda mourned Frank. She would walk around calling for him.
And sometimes I wonder if Frank's rapid decline was due to Nikki passing
earlier that year.

I always tell this story when the subject comes up but I suppose it's proof
cats do mourn.
When Gaz crossed the Bridge for the first few hours Isis didn't even seem to
notice, Gaz being an Olympic level sleeper she may have thought she was
asleep somewhere. By the next morning she was hunting all over the place and
calling out, she did this for 2 days, she went off her food (and this is a
cat who cleared her dish just a few minutes before starting out on her own
journey over the Bridge!), wouldn't sleep much, just paced the apartment,
calling and searching.
On the morning of the third day, we heard a crash from the bedroom. Isis was
not a climber so Gaz had long since gotten very fond of a certain box on the
top of the wardrobe. It contained some jumpers so it was soft but best of all
it was nice and high so Gaz could sleep in peace.
With no concern for her own safety and with great difficulty, Isis had jumped
onto the wardrobe. She ran to the box , she seemed to be saying "Found you!"
Then when she looked in the box, she let out a cry and sat there for some
minutes looking thoughtful before coming down.
She perked up after that gradually

Oh, that's so sad! :( Poor Isis.

Cats don't generally have long memories - I guess sometimes that's a
blessing.
