Blue tit in the house

The striped horror, did something very unusual for him. He brought in a
bird. It's a blue tit.

Luckily I got to the bird before the fatal feline bite was performed. Cue
one dazed, minus many tail feathers, blue tit sitting in my hand.

It is currently perched in my rescue bird cage - first time used in over a
year as the number of birds caught is so low. It has helped itself to some
sunflower seeds and some millet. It has hopped to where the water container
is and investigated the little wicker nest is in the corner.

It is very, very cute.

I'll let it rest up a while and then release it.

Heh. I did a real double-take at your header. At first I thought it
must be very cold at your house. :-)
Purrs for the little bird. I have rescued a couple of birds that
survived. They were just pigeons but I really enjoyed having them for
that short time, but the cats really stayed mad at me.

Hi Helen,

Umm, interesting subject line.

I'm sure the bird is quite relieved.  I hope it  will be able to maneuver
with missing tail feathers.

Do you have migratory birds there?  When we were in Texas, we were in the
path of bird migrations and bird watchers come from all over to see them.

Now that we are temporarily in the Northwest (U.S.), we hear the honking of
geese and see them heading south in those V formations.  It is quiet without
the songbirds.  I saw some quail scurry into some bushes along the road.  I
don't think they fly well enough to migrate.

We have pigeons here at the apartment complex.  We have cat-size window
sills.  Rosie and Cinder like to chatter at the pigeons.

Poor little mite. Hope it's OK and can be released soon.

The cats here are going wild. I hung up some suet balls in my apple tree
just outside the enclosure, and have had a lot of visitors. I don't know
if we have blue tits here, but we do have great tits. A couple of those
visit daily. Sometimes I have to go and drag Miranda inside while she
protests loudly, because I can see her shivering in the snow, but she
doesn't want to leave the birdies.

We also have long-tailed ones as well as the great ones. If you're feeling
dirty, we have coal ones too. Oh, and bearded ones and crested ones.

Actually, now that I took the trouble to look up its scientific name and
then its Swedish name, I find that we do have blue tits here, too.
Haven't seen any at my suet balls, though. Hmm, somehow I can't seem to
make this sound less pornographic.

Yes, we have blue tits, but I suspect you live too much in the city for
them. They are more shy than the great tits. We had them in Vantaa, and
when I was a kid in Lauttasaari, and also now in Laitila.

We also have coal tits and long-tailed tits, the long-tailed tits are very
pretty little birds.

We do have other species of tits too, but I'm no ornitologist, not to
mention looking up their names in English. Not sure where I have my bird
book either, hasn't appeared in any of the boxes unpacked so far. But
there are still boxes waiting to be unpacked...

Of course there are many species of birds in Britain that are common across
europe, all delightful in their own way.

The long-tailed tits travel in small groups, usually 6-12.

Victor's gone cuckoo ;-)

We also have blue throat and black-throated divers. And the great northern
diver isn't a porn star from Newcastle upon Tyne ;-)

Good performance.<g>

Where, please do you keep the birdcage?

Every now and then ( once a year or so) I succeed in rescueing a
birdie,
put it in a cage one day, just to make sure it is allright before I let
it fly again.

The cats then go crazy - no sideboard is high enough.
And birds, especially young ones are very fearful.
I learned from a book that most rescued birds die from the shock (cats,
humans, and so on...)

In the end I decided to put a nail in the outside-wall near to a window
-
as far as my arms could reach.<g> and hang the cage there.
That helped.

I just put it in another room and close the door so the felines can't get in
and give the poor avian some peace & quiet for a while.

Easy enough.  Considering my question again it might have been a stupid
one.<g>

But - in my house I have either unhinged the doors and put them in the
shed as I like free roaming, or I cut a cat-hole in the remaining doors
to make it easy on the cats to reach the rooms. Now, of course I have
no privacy.<g>

That must be one very relieved, very happy little bird. Good work!

Back when I was a teenager, I once saw our family cat pounce on a
pigeon which wasn't paying close enough attention to its surroundings.
I intervened before the pigeon had any injury beyond a few
knocked-loose feathers, but found that it had apparently fainted from
fright.  I set it up into a tree fork, and, about five minutes later,
it came to and flew away.

They basically suet with seeds and other things in them, they're sold to
feed the birds with.

Dear Polonca and Soncek, you make me thoroughly ashamed of myself that
