With winter coming, I am thinking of getting a Self-Warming Thermal Cat Cushion for Rusty. He is getting older and probably needs something to keep him warm at night. There is a picture and description of it at http://tinyurl.com/y59bly Has anyone used it and what do you think of it? Does it really keep the cat warm? Thanks for any info. TuTu likes it but it is in front of the bathroom heat register. At least it keeps one side of her warm. She will crawl in bed with me in the early morning hours. In the past I have had a cat bed with a low heat pad inside. That seemed to make her too warm. However, Princess (RB 16) used to love it. Best wishes. What I did was put it on my bed between my top sheet and my quilt, as it made a funny crackling sound, which he didn't much care for. Under the quilt though, and with the morning sun on the bed, he loved to lounge there. My girls don't pay much notice, though. In fact, in the fall - when it's cooler out, but not cold enough to turn on the heat - I flatter myself to think that Roxy is suddenly filled with deep affection for me, as she loves to cuddle with me. But as soon as it gets cold enough to turn on the heat, she abandons me without a backward glance for the back of the couch, where she can soak up the heatwaves from the baseboard space heater. I also often find her burrowed under blankets or throw rugs when it's cold in the apartment. Maybe because of her herpes, she gets chilled more easily. So I think I'll get one of these for her. It's certainly a lot safer than an electric one. Someone I know accidentally burned a kitten on an electric heating pad (the kitty is fine now!), so I've been wary of them. Not to mention being potential fire hazards. The self-heating one can be available even when I'm not at home. I'm thinking it might be easy to add a layer to some of the existing cat beds. Mostly it keeps cold from coming up through the floor and body heat from draining downwards. He actually bought me a couch throw that plugs in one year for Christmas. It made me feel like such an old lady. To make matters even worse, he bought *his mother* the same thing that year. Sherry I used to use heating pads (on low) on my two window cat seats. Now I have a piece of aluminum insulating material under a piece of fleece. The material can be purchased in hardware stores and is a sandwich of two thin sheets of aluminum with bubble wrap in between. I was curious about them too. Depends on how cold you keep your house, but he might like the electric ones, too. They are very safe, not like human heating pads. The max temp is 102 (the cat's body temp) and the element is encased in hard plastic with the cord wrapped in steel. You keep a fleece cover on it. I got ours back when I had a stray that I was keeping in the garage during the winter. They get good use out of it when it gets extremely cold, but kind of ignore it when it is not-so-cold.
