Perhaps some of you remember my stories of Reggie, the Orange
Smurgler.  He lived for many years in a local bakery, which closed
down at the beginning of this year.  Reggie is a wonderful deep orange
cat, with a big ol' head, and round, very sweet eyes, and he was the
official greeter at his bakery.  In the winter he would curl up near
the radiator; in the summer, he would sit right in the doorway.  And
he always acted very dignified, but with me, he would always go a
little bonkers.  I was so flattered, although I realized it was
probably my wool sweaters. ;)  He would climb up on my shoulder, and
dig his claws into my sweater, and smurgle extremely. ;)

Well, I tracked Reggie down to another store not far away, and on
Sunday, I paid him a visit.  I was happy to see that he was in a pet
supply store, and he had clearly tested all the cat beds. ;)  There
were a lot of soft, cuddly places for Reggie to nap (Reggie is not a
young cat anymore).  And wow!  Reggie took one look at me, and
streeeetched out,  climbed right up my arm, onto my shoulder and began
to vibrate with purrs.  I almost started crying right there.

I don't flatter myself enough to think that Reggie remembers me in
particular, but I am so glad that I seem to have some kind of positive
meaning for him.  This is such a wonderful, sweet, lovely cat.  I am
so glad he has a comfy home.

I think I'm in lurve with Reggie.  He has such a sweet expression --
he has such round eyes, and he's so-- so ORANGE.   I've always wished
I could take him home, but he's the king of his castle.

I am sure that he remembers you. He probably even knows  you have a cat
and something about that cat.It is good that he has found employment
that suits him. Public relations is a fast-moving field and it is
fortunate that this talented practitioner found a place where his
senior status didn't hurt him. I think that this job may, long-term be
a step up. He probably only worked in the bakery because he needed the
dough.

What a great reunion story! I'm glad you found him. I love shop cats, and
there are some stores I'll go into just to see the kitty (which I'm sure
the storeowners tolerate all in the name of good business :)).

Luckily, my favorite business with a shop cat is a plant nursery, and I
don't bother going there unless I'm going to buy something. But I always
take a look around for Phantom, a stray the store owners took in from the
street a few years ago. She's not particularly friendly, but she'll put
up with being petted. These days she's usually in a cat bed right by one
of the cash registers. I'm sure living among a bunch of plants is nirvana
to her.

Hey, next time, bring your camera. I can't imagine that his new "employer"
would mind you snapping a pic of him.

Oh, I often go in just to see the cat.  It happens often enough-- the
shop owners would be silly to object.  Even if I don't need any
coffee, I'll look in on Mr. Tea; even if I'm not trying on shoes, I'll
say hello to Henry, and if I'm not getting copies, I'll still say
hello to the Stripey Boys.

I am lucky in that a few businesses near me have shop cats.  I have a
friend in another state, who lives near a liquor store with a shop
rabbit!  She's a French lop, and she likes to ride on the restocking
cart. ;)

The sense of smell is the is the most primitive and longest lasting of
the senses. Aand smell is greatly tied to memory, scientists have
lately found out. So I am sure that Reggie remembers YOU, and the
sweater is secondary. I am so very happy for him living in such a
perfect home.

LOL, scientists are always "finding out" things that most people could
have told you long ago! Smells are so evocative of memories - someone's
perfume, a certain food cooking, or a kind of aromatic vegetation that
grows only in a certain area, so you only smell it when you go there.
To this day, when I smell fresh tar (asphalt), I'm reminded of walking
to school as a kid. On hot days, the tar would melt just a little and
give off a strong odor.

OK, just kidding about the scientists - I know you meant that they
have discovered it on a neurological level. But we all knew it was true!

Scientists don't think something is real until it is proven right down
to the laast decimal point and atomic structure, so to speak.

Aww, he loves you. I'm surprised you haven't been tempted to adopt him.

Cats defniately remember. Even after years.
