Christy just called me.  Not only does she have fribramtosis but she also
has hemochromatosis.  Her body can't absorb iron.  So her liver is failing.
All those years when her parents told her "eat your spinach" she ate it (and
loved it) she was essentially killing herself.  Finding a diet she can eat
will be a challenge since she can't eat most meats and vegetables which
contain iron.

She wanted me to send purrs to everyone who needs them.  I'm requesting
purrs for her.

Thanks for the update, Jill.  I hope now that the problem has been
identified that the doctors can come up with some way to treat it ad that
the treatment will be available to her.

We will keep Christi in our thoughts and prayers.

Also keeping Kili in our thoughts and prayers. I don't know anything
about fibramtosis but I am familiar with hemochromatosis. My mother had
it. It isn't that her body cannot absorb iron; her body is absorbing
too much iron and it begins to deposit in the organs. The treatment
used to be periodical removal of blood. I do know the liver can
regenerate itself with treatment. Purrs that she has skillful doctors
and that her body responds to treatment.

A friend of mine has had hemochromatosis for a number of years.  He also has
blood removed as a treatment, on a fairly frequent basis.

Wow, maybe we can trade blood. I can't keep enough iron in my system.
How weird that hers absorbs too much.  What a dilemma.  Poor Christy.
Ain't medical science incredible?

She's at the Mayo Clinic for treatment for the fibromatosis (my bad on the
misspelling earlier) which is a particularly rare form of tumors in her
breasts, ribcage, etc.  They're already talking about removing her breasts
and some ribs and now they find she has this stuff.

Yes, they are talking about a full blood transfusion to start the treatment.
Poor thing has always tried to eat right and she loves seafood and green
leafy vegetables.  Now they are telling her to avoid most fish and seafood,
spinach, cabbage, brussels sprouts, broccoli, many forms of lettuce... in
other words pretty much everything she likes to eat.  It sucks!

This is apparently an inherited medical condition so now she needs to
contact her parents and her siblings to make sure they get tested.

OMG, I am so glad she was able to go to the clinic and find the new
problem too! I can't believe it wasn't found before now, maybe it's
something hard to diagnose?

I have high hopes that they can help her out and get everything back on
track.

I'm so sorry to hear that. What is the prognosis? Treatment? We'll be
sending lots of purrs.

But I thought we could not survive without iron, particularly

Well, we can't survive without some iron.  It sounds like she isn't
excreting as much iron as most people, as well as not properly making
use of iron in the diet, so it would be a matter of hitting the proper
balance.

The first thing they want to do is a full blood transfusion.

Apparently not everyone's body can process iron the way it should.  She
wouldn't even know she had this if she didn't have this other disease,
fibromatosis.  They are talking about removing her breasts and some ribs
because of the way the tumors attach themselves to bone.  Poor woman :(

Yeah, she's not doing well.  I noticed she posted about this to rfc.  She
needs to talk to the hospital dietician.  She wasn't exactly eating like mad
before but she loved a good salad and stuff like that.  Poor girl is right!

She's really in the wars, isn't she! Many purrs going her way... my
uncle had hemeochromatosis because he had leukemia and had to have so
many transfusions while he was being treated... after they put all
that blood into him they ended up having to take it all OUT again once
a month for a year or so, and then he was fine. He was most annoyed at
the waste - because he'd had cancer they couldn't USE his blood for
anything so they played vampire every month for nothing...

Ginger-lyn, I just looked up your husband's condition and it sounds kind of
similar, yet a bit different.  With hemochromatosis, a person can still be
anemic, but allergic to iron, in a way.  We store iron in our system and it
doesn't come out.  It's a genetic condition, inherited by both parents, and
whatever we eat from childhood on that has an iron count, is stored as a
toxin in our liver.  Unfortunately, I thought I was a health food freak and
ate a lot of green leafy veggies, lots of shellfish, raw oysters, clams,
salads - all not knowing that this was slowly killing me because my body
treats it all as poison.

My doctor put me on a strict diet of fish and light colored COOKED veggies
(no more of my beloved salads), no steak, pork, chicken and no dairy or carb
related foods like rice, potatoes or bread.  Luckily, I really do like
veggies and my husband came home from the store tonight with asparagus,
broccoli, yellow squash, celery, carrots, peas, cauliflower and onion - all
my favorites!  I don't know what to eat first!  Ergh.......  I feel like a
herion junkie that wants to eat it all!

I'd be interested in hearing more about your husband's condition on a site
that isn't so much in doctor-speak, if you could direct me to one.

Thanks,

kili

Not to depress you, but doesn't broccoli contain a fair amount of iron?
Anyway, good luck with the new diet. I wonder what I would do if I had
your condition - with type I diabetes, I have to make sure I get enough
carbs so my blood sugar does not get too low. Is fruit alright to eat?
Are they going to do a blood transfusion? Purrs on the way. As if you
didn't have enough on your plate already.

Broccoli does contain iron, but if it's cooked, the content goes down quite
a bit.  Certain fruits are okay to eat; I've got a double whammy where I
have IBS as well, so many fruits upset my tummy.  Blueberries, cherries,
cantaloupe, raspberries and blackberries are about my limit.

I was so depressed about this diet at first, but I'm much more optomistic
now!
