Look up and I see the three refugees on the cooktop staring up the
kitchen vent, Harry trying to reach up there. Two months ago I heard a
rustling in there which I decided must be a bat seeking refuge, couldn't
be anything else because years ago, faced with a squirrel in the crawl
space I had covered the chimney and all other vents on the roof with
fine mesh to keep out critters, the kitchen vent included. Get up and
drop cats off the cooktop to avoid pans being knocked off, repeat ad
nauseum. A half hour later Tao is till staring into the vent. Endless
entertainment, particularly with the catdoor still closed and breakfast
over.

Mine stares at the fireplace because when a bird lands on the chimney cap
and sings the sound travels very well and you'd swear there's a bird in
there (not possible because we had it screened in after a few birds dropped
in and gave the cats quite a thrill in the living room!)
