Julie and Sam - 20 Oct 2006 02:12 GMT
The Phone Rang! Sam is doing well. They removed the chest tube and he is
breathing well. He's very dopey right now and they will keep him on pain
meds through the night. He has his pain patch which should kick in by
tomorrow and if everything continues well he should be able to come home
tomorrow afternoon.

The surgeon said that the tumor was much nastier than he expected. It was
hard on the outside but very soft on the inside and had dissolved the rib
bone it was attached to.  He said, however, it was well encapsulated and he
would be very surprised and disappointed to learn that he hadn't gotten all
of it.  Of course there is no way to know what might be floating around
microscopically but things look very positive.

It seems Sam has worked his magic on another vet clinic. The surgeon told me
that throughout the entire day Sam watched everything that went on around
him very carefully and that he has a lot of character. I'm not sure I
mentioned that the emergency vet we went to a month ago that started all of
this had written in his chart Very Nice Cat and underlined it twice.

I think I'll go to bed now. I'm to call them tomorrow morning to find out if
Sam can come home in the afternoon. I just want to hug his silly furry butt
:) Thank you all for the purrs and good thoughts, you all helped us get
through this.

It sounds like he is doing the very best that could be expected.  So glad
the phone finally rang.  Lots of extra purrs going out for him to have a
good night and to be home ASAP.

I have no doubt that all those purrs are what helped him make it through
today! Thanks, Tish and Jo.

Yay, Sam!  If you can do it, I can.  My tumor is also affixed to my ribcage
and thus they have to remove it and use surgical gauze to cover my gap after
removing my ribs.  If a cat can make it, I surely can!  Thanks for the
update, Julie.  It was very inspiring, particularly to me.

Kili,
You just make sure we know when you're going into the hospital and Sam will
be able to send you extra special, been there/done that purrs.  Sam gives
high-fives and he'll send you a high-five as well.
Julie
Rhonda - 20 Oct 2006 06:58 GMT
Kili, you're feisty enough and optimistic enough that you are going to
fly right through that surgery!

Maybe we should send you little bags of Temptations to help you recover.
Well, at least it would help Nurse Pua.

So glad he seems to have come through with flying colours. Funny thing,
I woke up at the exact time your previous update had arrived at my
server - 3.40 a.m. my time. I couldn't go to sleep again, so I finally
got up, and rushed to the computer for an update. The cats were sleeping
peacefully on and around my feet, but I can assure you, they were also
purring.

Sam is a wonderful kitty.  It's a good thing they found that tumor and
got it out in time!  He's such a little sweetheart.

Hi Julie,

I'm glad Sam is doing so well! What a little trouper. That means
everything that the vet is optimistic.

If Sam can't come home tomorrow, I hope you are able to visit him. I'm
sure that will perk him up.

Hope he heals quickly,

Rhonda

I was so glad to read this when I got home from work.  I've been thinking
about Sam today and hoping things were panning out okay.  It's pretty good
news if the vet thinks he got the whole tumour capsule without it breaking
open.
Lots of purrs from my two for "a very nice cat" to recover quickly and live
until very old age.

Excellent.  I knew it, from your earlier post last night, that he
would be sailing through!

VNC....a new set of letters to add to his name now:

Sam, VNC

What an accolade coming from a TED!!

Happy thoughts being sent your way and
to aid in Sam, VNC's rapid and uneventful recovery!

ask your vet about this, but once you have him home,
during recovery, if ever you hear any wheezing on him,
think *pain control* first.  It might be the first sign since
cats don't usually manifest pain very lightly or easily.

That's so good to know! The only audible indications of pain I've
heard from a cat is a groan. This from a cat (Marley, RB) who had
megacolon and couldn't poop. Another sign of pain is the obvious
licking, but since some do this so much it's hard to tell that it's
from pain.

Well, let me add this.  This finding of post-op wheezing
would be highly unusual in a cat who wasn't already asthmatic,
and could indicate other dangers too, so it is sort of specific
to Sam.  Since we know he is asthmatic already, we would
not necessarily be worried about those other causes quite as
much as in a previously undiagnosed cat.  Therefore pain
becomes a more likely cause in his case.

Although, come to think of it, if it happened
post-op in any cat, one would still want to consider
pain as a trigger, but there might be other causes too.
