jmcquown - 17 Oct 2006 23:47 GMT Not in the trap... I grabbed the skinny kitty and plunked her in the 2nd bathroom. With food and water and a foil tray with litter for a litter box. She's crying. Persia is hissing like mad and acting like I've lost my mind. Meanwhile, I'll be able to fatten this kitty up and take her to the shelter or to the House of Mews tomorrow! YAY!!!!!

Dewi - 17 Oct 2006 23:58 GMT YAY!!! Such good news! You're fantastic!
I'm sure that after weeks of apologies and special treats, Persia will eventually forgive you. ;) Deep down she probably loves the excitement.

You have no idea :) Persia is a foundling herself but never that skinny, never that boney. But she knows how to raid a pantry. :D Persia can't have treats because she's on a prescription diet.
She's ignoring the fact that there is another cat in the house. I do so wish I could keep this one too! But no, the stray must go. But (and this is the curse) I've tentatively named her "Spotty". Uh oh. Well she's got spots!
The director at the House of Mews has agreed to let their vet test her for infectious diseases so I'll take her there tomorrow or the next day. And she will have a happy and healthy life.

I can bribe my cats off for just about any offense I might have committed, just by dumping some kitty drugs on the floor. Instant forgiveness. :) (More like, offense instantly forgotten!)

Thank you for doing this Jill. It would be nice for you to keep the spotty kitty but if you really can't, then thank you for making sure she finds a real home.

I remember when a bunch of us cornered two feral brothers on the corner of Winthrop and Edgewood. it is perhaps undortunate that the cats were named after the streets but both were doing well in forever homes when I last heard about them fairly recently. Still, being named Winthrop. OR Edgewood. I was outnumberd on the naming committee.* Spotty is much better.

Meanwhile the poor thing is crying in my bathroom. It's about to break my heart hearing her. I have a photo or two here:

Keep in mind that she’s so much better off in your bathroom than outside. Your posts from last night with her in the rain broke my heart. I think that’s why I had such an emotional reaction to you catching her. :)
She’s got such beautiful coloring, and she must have thought she was in heaven with all the food there! What’s in the styrofoam container, chicken hearts?

> She's got such beautiful coloring, and she must have thought she > was in heaven with all the food there! What's in the styrofoam > container, chicken hearts? Nope, no chicken hearts! Just stinky cheap fish-flavoured cat food. The poor thing was starving. I gave her some of the crunchy kibble Persia can't eat any more, too. She should be okay when I get her vetted and placed at the House of Mews. I'd love to keep her but I can't. I wish I could have gotten a photo of her looking directly at the camera, she has very pretty gold/brown eyes. She's a very sweet cat so she should easily find a forever home :)

FIV isn't a problem IMO. It's mainly spread though bites and not through scratches or licking of fur. Cats don't tend to bite each other unless they're having a really bad fight.
Hopefully she will get a negative result for both viruses. Prayers and purrs being sent for that.

I realize vetting is a minor expense in the long run, but food/water and litter isn't so much more for 2 cats than 1. The only real consideration I can think of is the cost of boarding when you travel. But if it would help I'd send something to help in the cost of vetting. I couldn't cover it all since I'm looking at $1500 in surgery for Sam on Thursday, but I'd be willing to help some.

You know how some people say they have "black thumbs" when it comes to gardening? I wonder if it's possible that some people happen to be like that with cats, and if they adopt another, something will just happen to it like the first.
Annie Wxill - 20 Oct 2006 04:57 GMT > You know how some people say they have "black thumbs" when it comes to > gardening? I wonder if it's possible that some people happen to be > like that with cats, and if they adopt another, something will just > happen to it like the first. Tak, If they adopt another, they will again experience the satisfaction of knowing that whatever happens, the new cat will bring them joy just like the first one did. And, yes, something will happen in time, and it will be painful.
But, this new cat, instead of the alternative, will have lived the rest of its life, however long or short, knowing love, happiness, a soft warm bed and a full belly, and somebody to purr for.
Don't blame yourself for Betty's tragic end. What do you think her life would have been without you? Instead, congratulate yourself for the decision you made to adopt her and remember how precious the time you had together was to you both.
Do you really think Betty would have been better off with somebody else or nobody at all?
You may not be ready to take in another cat right now, but please don't give up on the idea. You are too good a catslave.

[quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > like that with cats, and if they adopt another, something will just > happen to it like the first. I've had around 15 cats over my lifetime. Some had good long lives, others died very young. All were happy while they were with me. There simply is no "black thumb" (I actually don't believe that about gardening either actually. With that it truly is a matter of skill and time IMO).
Jane - 20 Oct 2006 12:41 GMT > >Great Tak, Jill is an angel for catching Spotty, but she needs a lifetime > >angel too. [quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > like that with cats, and if they adopt another, something will just > happen to it like the first. Tak, for what it's worth, I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN. Oh boy do I. My first cat had to be put to sleep because she got some kind of massive tumors all inside her. She was in pain and miserable and I had to send her to the Rainbow Bridge (before I knew what it was). I couldn't face the thought of losing another pet for 10 years. Please don't wait that long. I never knew how miserable I was for those 10 years until I got my next pet. I'm not saying that you need another cat, I'm saying that another cat needs you. Desperately. There's someone out there looking for her one true forever home, and you're it.

I've refused to join in the "Get another cat asap" debate because I understand how traumatised you were over losing Betty. I still am sitting here with tears in my eyes over having had to make the same decision with Fugazi and that was in 1999 and I still have a little sob when I think of Betty (and Frank, Nikki, Princess, Jackie, Jasper Dudely, Elvis, Selena, Fiona and every other cat I've cried over)
But one day you will find him/her . As a very wise friend of mine said "to not have another one is an insult to the one that is gone. Did they so put you off cats that you never want another one?"
Belive me the cat agency is on your case, When Isis (Gaz's sister) passed over the Bridge we half decided it would be nice to be able to go on holiday but suddenly there was this woman at work who was going to dump the kittens in a pet shop so we were 50/50 about keeping them but figured we could rehome them better after all when I told the lady I would take 2 girla in Isis had only been gone 2-3 days and we weren't sure but after all we could find them homes if it didn"t work out
I guess everyone here knows we did find them a very good home...OURS
Dunz and Sarsi are not Gaz and Issi and we know that. Just like the next Furball that you have (and having read how much you did for Betty I know there's a Hell of a lucky furball out there!) won't be Betty. I got annoyed when people suggested after getting the Furballs that they somehow "replaced" Gaz and Issi. They don't. Your next cat won't replace Betty but will be different
Betty will always be in your (|and ours) heart but when the time comes the agency will send a new furball to love and that will be one of the luckiest cats ever!
You say you're worried that the next cat might have the same problem like you think you are cursed.....
No one can predict the future I'd really like to say that your next cat will live to 400 years but I can't . But think on this
What sort of life would Betty have had in a shelter?
You gave her so much love that I can't believe. Here in the UK we don't have oncology specialists etc abd the general advice is if a cat has cancer put the car down and whilst I am grateful to the vet who went through the options with Gaz I will always wonder if I did enough
I am not saying get a cat NOW! Just be receptive to the idea that one day a paw will reach out from a pen or you'll see a pair of eyes and they will say "Take me home"
And it wont be disrespectful to Betty to give love such as you gave her to another Furball it will be a tribute to her...

I'm glad you got the poor thing off the streets... I'm not sure why you can't keep her though... is your apartment supposed to be 'no pets'? When I brought Tessie home it upset Scouty and Silver so much I wondered if they were ever going to forgive me - they even hissed and lashed out at US for bringing the interloper in. I'm sure you remember how upset it made me... but they got used to her and they co-habit quite successfully now. Anyway, if you really can't keep her I hope that the shelter can find her a good home - it's got to be better than being out on the streets!

IIRC, Jill isn't *supposed* to have pets, but she can pay extra & an extra deposit and have a pet, but her manager knows her, and that she's lived there a long time, so they don't make a fuss over her having Persia.
Persia, OTOH, *does* make a big fuss about any other cats on the premises! I remember, about a year ago, Jill had her windows opened and a cat wandered onto her patio, and Persia went ballistic! Charged at the cat, and knocked the screen door to her sliding glass patio door off the tracks! Jill now puts a pressure gate thing up whenever she opens the sliding glass door in nicer weather so *that* won't happen again.

Actually, I already had a pet when I moved in here... my dog, Sampson. He died in 1999 and yes, I paid an extra deposit and also extra pet rent for him. Made me rather angry when he died and I called the apartment manager and said, "I don't have a dog anymore, he died" and she said, "So get another one!" Like they can just be replaced. Heh.
Two years later Persia showed up at my door and I told the manager, so she started charging me the pet rent again. When I lost my job in 2004 she took that off my monthly bill, which was kind of her. She didn't have to.

Persia hates other cats! I'm not sure she's forgiven me for having this little one even temporarily in my bathroom. I'm getting the snub treatment :)

Nope not "no pets" although the manager did waive the monthly pet fee given that I don't have a job and luckily the management company isn't going to add that back to my rent when I renew my lease.
But Persia HATES other cats. She's still hiding from me most of the time even though the kitty isn't here anymore. She feels like I abandoned her in favour of this other cat, which isn't true. But who knows how a cat feels? I just know how she looked at me while that other kitty was in the bathroom and she wouldn't come for scritches or hugs or snuggle with me as long as Spotty was in the apartment. Spotty has gone to The House of Mews now, with a clean bill of health, but Persia is still treating me like a leper. I figure she'll take a couple of days to get over there being another cat in the place.

Mischief - 19 Oct 2006 05:11 GMT Congrats Jill!
It's similar to how i snagged Mayhem. I put food on the wall she was on and she munched that down.
Then I put food on the ground below the wall, and while she was munching on that, put it underneath the barred gate, and then on MY side of the gate.
And then I started gently petting her and then scooped her up.
And you NAMED her, too!! Uh oh.....
hehehe
Good luck to you and spotty and don't worry Persia should come around soon.

Yes, she'll make you pay as long as she can smell the intruder. Every time I introduced a new cat into the house, the ruling cat took great offense and in one case (Sarah) did not forgive me for three weeks. But then, I had walked in the house with a litter of five in my arms that I had just picked up huddled together in the street, so I can't blame her for being upset! Caitlin came from that litter. All others went to good homes directly from my tiny little attic apartment at the time. (Student days).
They always forgive in the end, though. Even Luthien here, who has never been introduced to any cats, other than her "sister" Zildjian(RB), is slowly adjusting. When I give them "lickies" from my plate when I finish morning cereal, for example, they are now diving into it together and yin-yanging around each other's head trying to get every last drop of milk!! I gotta get a picture of that if I can, heheh.
Worst case scenario with a new cat in the house is the Mexican stand-off....When both cats want the lap, and neither is willing to give way, but neither will approach either, knowing it will trigger the fur-flying...... It's like a spaghetti western, sometimes around here! Muezza.Glorio tried to jump into my arms first thing in the a.m., when I was still lying in bed, as he does every morning. Woops!! Luthien was there ahead of him and she sent him flying! Oh my, I had to get out of the way pretty fast to avoid a facial laceration!! But then all was well again. Hm. Momentary spat, I guess. Hah!

When I saw your pic of her I immediately thought "this is a boycat." The shape of the head. May he get fattened up at the shelter and a forever home come along. You did great for him, maybe he could have died if you hadn't intervened.

I think I kind of figured with those colors a girl would have been a calico. But boycats jaws are definitely different.
