Progress report on Kitty Farmcat

Christina Websell - 02 Oct 2006 20:02 GMT She was diagnosed with CRF a few weeks ago and TED said the best chance would be if she ate this particular diet all the time. She loved it at first, but now she doesn't. I was so paranoid about her not eating anything else that I fed her in the spare bedroom so she could not eat Boyfie's food. It was a nightmare. If I shut her in the bedroom she could not get to her litterbox in the bathroom. If I left the door open Boyfie would sneak upstairs and eat her kidney diet. Plus she decided she didn't like to be isolated to feed and refused to eat except in the kitchen near Boyfie which is what she is used to.
I've had to compromise. Boyfie is eating more chicken, turkey and white fish cat food than he ever has in his life to eat alongside Kitty. I sneak a pouch of kidney diet in for her as often as I can. She seems quite well, considering. She's stopped peeing everywhere and uses her litterbox in the bathroom. Her appetite is still good so I guess we are on track for the moment. Talking about the litterbox in the bathroom, I think it was Joyce who said that her cat peed in her litterbox at the side of her toilet at the same time that she was sitting on it herself - not the litterbox, the toilet... Kitty did this too, today! I got up first thing in the morning and she got up when she heard me and we both had full bladders. Synchronisation took place. LOL!

It doesn't matter where he's sleeping, if he hears me stirring he knows I'm going to the bathroom and he's waiting at the door.
I think you're doing a grand job with KittyFarmcat's diet. I've heard it said here before that it is better that they eat something and have a good quality of life than refuse to eat and everyone be miserable. Purrs and hugs to both you and KFC that her health continues to maintain and you both have many years to share together.

That was me. Smudge will sometimes come running in to pee if she hears me peeing. Roxy has also done it occasionally. It's a little bonding moment for human and kitty.

I know it's low in phos because the vet said so, but I suspect it is also low in protein too. Boyfie is a very active young cat, I suspect the protein would be too low for him. Besides which, yes, it is horribly expensive, more than 3x the cost of ordinary pouches.

badwilson - 03 Oct 2006 03:41 GMT I think that's a good food compromise. It's better for her to eat something at all. And not stressing her out about it has got to be helpful. I'm so glad to hear that things are going well so far. LOL about the synchronized peeing. Vino's litterbox is in the laundry room which is on the far side of the house from our bedroom with ensuite bathroom. But Vino still gets up with me when I go to pee in the night and winds himself around my legs. Then he gets back into bed. But I wonder if he would pee if he had a litterbox in there. I doubt I'll ever find out, it's a very small bathroom and there is absolutely no room for a litterbox.

When I kept a box in the bathroom, Luthien was exactly the same....she would get right in there as soon as I did and we would make beaoootiful music together!!

Try her with branded senior food like Whiskas Senior or Felix Senior. The vets recommend that if their patients won't eat kidney diet.
Analysis % for Whiskas Senior.... Protein 10.0, Oil 7.0, Ash 2.5, Fibre 0.3, Moisture 80.0, Vitamin E 14mg/kg and Copper 0.8mg/kg.

I will try this, thanks, and rotate the food. She really liked the kidney diet at first but got fed up with having to eat it at every meal. She is not as feisty as she was, and this in itself is causing me some concern. She doesn't seem to be unwell, but she rarely goes out and has turned into a cuddlebug.

Dewi - 06 Oct 2006 12:51 GMT What symptoms did Kitty Farmcat display with her CRF? My parents feed this old stray tom cat, and I'm wondering if he has CRF. Almost every day they see him do a pee (squatting not spaying), which I thought was odd. Why would a very timid animal regularly pee in front of them? His water consumption is about normal though. Being so shy they can't take the cat to the vet to get a diagnosis.

[quoted text clipped - 21 lines] > > Tweed Christina Websell - 06 Oct 2006 18:53 GMT > What symptoms did Kitty Farmcat display with her CRF? She started to pee in inappropriate places in the house. Both my cats are outdoor/indoor and they have always preferred to use the great outdoors for their toilet duties. I first noticed her doing this occasionally last winter and I wondered if it was simply that she was feeling the cold in her old age and didn't want to go outside. Then I noticed her drinking more water, which it to say that I actually "noticed" her drinking. I had had her for a number of years and had never seen her drink (although of course she must have done, maybe when I was out.) So that alerted me because I have had dogs with CRF and I knew that drink more-pee more scenario.
> My parents feed this old stray tom cat, and I'm wondering if he has > CRF. Almost every day they see him do a pee (squatting not spaying), > which I thought was odd. Boyfriend never sprays, (AFAIK) and didn't do so even before he was neutered. He always squats to pee. He digs a little hole, perches his backside over it and lets go, then covers it up.
> Why would a very timid animal regularly pee in > front of them? His water consumption is about normal though. I'm not sure. A timid cat is surely unlikely to pee in front of them as that would make him vulnerable while he was doing it. If his water comsumption still seems normal, maybe he is just starting with CRF.
>Being so > shy they can't take the cat to the vet to get a diagnosis. I understand that. If I was in this situation I would go down the old-fashioned route for kidney failure. I would feed him white meat only, fish, chicken, turkey with a bit of kidney diet kibble mixed in so he can get the vitamins and minerals he needs. Before kidney diets were invented this is what the vets all recommended. It will not hurt him anyway and could perhaps extend his life. About 5 years ago my neighbour and I shared the feeding of a very old feral tom of the ginger persuasion that had appeared. He too was very shy, we couldn't get anywhere near him. He used to come and eat only when he knew we'd gone back into the house. My neighbour was very upset one day when he found the poor old boy dead in his orchard, and gave him a respectful burial. Sometimes all you can do is what they allow you to, isn't it?

Dewi - 07 Oct 2006 01:56 GMT Thanks for that. I'll suggest the white meat diet. He currently eats pet mince (which is red meat), canned food and regular whiskas biscuits. He's looking a right mess, but eats well. The poor old boy also has cancer in his nose. He's all white so I'm not surprised. We had a family cat who was also white who ended up with cancer in her nose. His symptoms are very similar.
Thank again.

She would like to report that she had the zoomies yesterday and has a good appetite...except for her kidney diet. <sigh> Of which I have 32 pouches left - trying to mix it in - and another 48 ordered from the vet when I got the last lot, still at TED's, <even bigger sigh> which I have had an invoice for.
Why, oh why, did she say this was the yummiest food in the world ever and get my hopes up so I got lots more and then say she hated it? This is the supreme b*st*rd cat trick. Just let *me* worry about what you should eat to save your kidneys, KFC, don't even think of going along with it! Like I said in another thread, sometimes all you can do is what they will let you. It's very frustrating. Very worrying too.

Kitties are like that: when trying a new food I always buy the small bag and Soncek usually likes it. So then I get the big bag and the same food suddenly isn't as appealing anymore :( We will continue to purr and send best wishes for KFC and hugs for you, Christina, for taking such good care of her, Polonca and Soncek

Very worrying too. I know how you feel, Tweed. I was so worried all the time about what Frank ate, I'm sure he picked up on my worry and it probably affected him, too. Luckily he never went completely 'off' the kidney diet. Many purrs for KFC. As long as she eats something, it won't be so bad. Zoomies are good. :o) I remember how happy I felt when Frank and Nikki tore around the flat chasing each other, at the age of 15 and 16 respectively. There's nothing like a pair of elderly cats acting like kittens.

Is there any chance the vet will take back the unopened pouches and give you a refund? After Skeeter went to the Rainbow Bridge, I had several cans of KD left over, and my vet took them back and credited me for them.
