I'm a sucker....

Katrina - 01 Oct 2006 04:53 GMT I was at PetSmart yesterday to get cat food and one of the rescue groups was there... . There was this absolutely precious black and white tuxedo boy with folded ears (Scottish fold type folded ears). Apparently he was abandoned when his people moved. I sat there for about 45 minutes and petted him and talked with the foster dad. I couldn't get him out of my head last night, and mentioned him to my husband, who's response was "it's up to you". I went back today, spent some more time with him (his current name is Montgomery, but he somehow looks like a Max to me).
(I'm sure you can see where this is going...)
I filled out the adoption paperwork... I should get a call back in a day or so.

There was this absolutely precious black and [quoted text clipped - 14 lines] > > Well, concatulations!!!!!! How exciting. We require pics. As soon as he settles in (assuming that they approve the application... I can't think of a reason why they wouldn't, but I've heard stories of how picky some rescue groups are). I've been doing research on Scottish folds, and apparently there's a degenerative joint condition that's common if both parents have folded ears and less common but not unknown in those with only one parent with folded ears. This won't affect my decision to take him, but I need to ask his foster dad if he shows any stiffness or disinclination to jump or climb. I'd want to be on the lookout for any problems so they can be treated ASAP.

Mischief - 01 Oct 2006 06:46 GMT That's AWESOME!!!! Glad to know there's another human suckered by the lovable cuteness of a kitty. hehehehe
Anyway, I'm not too familair with the degenerative joint disease of Scottish folds, but I HAVE seen a few with ear infections. The folder ears in cats is similar to dogs with big floppy ears, they tend to trap dirt, mites and possibly bacteria. I had this one client bring in Winston, her Scottish fold every month for us to clean his ears. I think it was because she didn't want to cause him pain or discomfort herself...or something like that, she listed her occupation as a 'Psychic'. Oookkkaaaaaaaaayy.............
I remember of the vets i've worked with had a scottish fold named Oscar. I watched him grow from a kitten to quite a sleek, handsome adult. He was SOO cute when he would get the zoomies and just TEAR about the large cage he was in. And then stop suddenly, and look at me with that adorable
I used to say that when Whomever (God, etc) made this kind of cat, it was so cute that He must have pinched it's ears like a grandma pinches the cheeks of a baby. But He pinched a bit too hard so the ears stayed like that. (I come up with weird explanations like that. Like when we see a weird mixture of breeds in a single animal, I say it was like God threw their DNA patterns in a blender and hit PUREE. hehehehe)
But anyway, just wanted to throw that out. I haven't seen too many scottish folds with ear problems, but apparently they do tend to happen.
Can't wait for the piccies....

Matthew - 02 Oct 2006 19:38 GMT You are not a sucker the powers work in mysterious ways. I have been lucky enough to be in places to rescue all of out kitties. I hope I am this lucky thru out the rest of my life. If Rumble had not been sick I would have not been at the vets to bring home Ka' Shay. Literally the humane society was there going to take her away and she did a cry that I heard. My words is someone is not happy. The vet told me someone had dumped a Hemmingway red tabby female on his porch and he could not keep her due to all his other rescue. I saw her and said she is mine no ifs ands or buts. The gods work in mysterious ways and I am a cat slave and very proud to serve those ways just like you are. :-)

I swear some mysterious "agency" sends them
When we decided to have indoor cats the very same night we got talking to a friend of a friend and it turned out that his cat had kittens and he was looking for a good home so we went to adopt one and ended up with Fugazi and Isis (I think I've told before how they did the cute double act to persuade us that we needed more than one kitten!)
Then as Isis was showing signs of her age- in fact pretty much the same weekend- a semi feral in Feltham gave birth to a litter in a garden shed and then I just happened to get a temp job with the woman feeding said semi feral, which led to me getting Dunzi and Sarsi. I almost can imagine a memo being sent to Issi via the Mothership:
"Mothership agency is aware you are old and tired and want nothing more than to cross the bridge and see Fugazi again but they appreciate you don't want to leave your Hoomins without a cat to worship. Fear not- 2 little furballs are being born who will give the Hoomins something to worship.Arrangements are bing made as we speak for the female Hoomin to contact the slave who has their mother at the moment..Go to your well earned crossing knowing that within a month the house will be full of little feet"

He looks > almost puppy-like, with those ears. Yep... and he's really very mellow- I had expected that he'd find a spot and hide and we wouldn't see him for a day or two. Nope- he's perched on the cat tree where he can see everything, and he gets rather frantic if the door to the room is closed. He does the "I'm gonna dig my way out of here" kind of scratching at the door. He seems to want the door open even if that means that the dog comes in and lays on the floor. They watch each other, but there's no hissing, barking or other anti-social behavior. I think in an week or so he's going to be chasing the dog around...

When I first saw him a week ago, he was a bit thin and his coat looked a bit rough and dry. Now he looks better. He's still a bit thin, but not as much as he did at first. He's got a very soft, semi-long coat, so some of what you're seeing is probably the fluff around his neck. According to the sign on the cage, he weighs 12 pounds. I have no idea where that number came from, but I'd be surprised if he's over 7 pounds. He's smaller than either Ming or Buttercup (both height and length), and he's thinner. They're both in the 10 pound range, so there's NO WAY that he's 2 pounds heavier. I also don't think he's fully grown- I'd guess he's about a year or so. He does have a "chunky" look to him (big paws with tufts and his face looks wide because of the ears), so I think he looks bigger than he really is.
As for his name... They put "Mr. Montgomery" on his paperwork. I thought he looked more like a "Max" than like a "Montgomery", but my husband thinks he looks like an "Angus". At the moment, he's "pretty boy", "little boy" or "handsome". We'll see how he settles in and I'm sure he'll let us know his name.
Katrina
Tish - 09 Oct 2006 05:10 GMT He's an absolute cutie. To my eyes he looks like a McCoy (err, from the original Star Trek), but that's just the Scottish Fold and no-nonsense attitude. Mind you, since I called one of my cats Mr Spock based on his eyebrow markings, big pointy ears and superior attitude, I'm not to be trusted with naming cats :^)

Katrina - 14 Oct 2006 07:17 GMT Well, it's been almost a week, and he's settling in nicely. He's got a new name from a character in a Scottish children's book- he's officially "Wee Gillis", or "Gillie" for short. Gillie is a snuggle bug, and pretty much ignores the dog unless Boris comes too close. Then there's a bit of a hiss-and-spit, but it sounds more like "hey, you! stupid! yeah, you! don't step on me you big oaf!" than anything really serious. As soon as Boris backs off, Gillie calms right down without even running off. He's trying to play with Ming, but while Ming is curious, he's also cautious, so they really haven't cut loose yet. Buttercup is a bit more stand-offish... she's not really unfriendly, she just doesn't want to get too close (her expression is really funny- she looks like royalty being asked to rub shoulders with the common folk...). I think Gillie's going to be an "under the covers cat" like our old cat Tigger (RB). Neither Ming or Buttercup tolerate being under the covers, and I really miss having a kitty tunnelling around in the winter when it's cold.

Katrina - 25 Oct 2006 04:38 GMT Well, we're now over 2 weeks since Gillie came to join the Worley clowder... he's nicely settled in, completely ignores the dog and has actually been observed playing with the Ming and Buttercup. A couple of days ago I was standing in the living room, looking down the hall into the bedroom and saw a couple of meezer kitties staring intently at the dust ruffle on the bed. In a flash, two little black and white mittens darted out from under the ruffle to be met with meezer paws playing patty-cake. Ming and Buttercup then ran around the end of the bed with Gillie in hot pursuit. I think we can say that integration is a success.
