>>When I have given half of the cat food from a tin to the cats for dinner, I
close the tin with a plastic lid. Here in town, I put the tin in the
fridge,
but out on the island, I keep the tins on a shelf above the other bed
(the
one I don't sleep in). The temperature usually drops so much at night
that
the food keeps quite well there.

>>Unless Frank is feeling peckish in the night. Then he will jump up on the
bed in the middle of the night, grab the tin by the plastic lid with
his
teeth, and if he gets it at just the right angle, he can shake the tin
so
that it drops to the floor while the plastic lid stays in his mouth.
Voila!
My cat can open food tins. The drawback (for Frank) is that I usually
awake
from the thud as the tin hits the floor, see what he is about, and take
the
food away from him. He eats it by sticking in a paw, taking some food,
and
licking it off the paw.

Oh Marina, I started laughing when I read this post.  I like scrolling
through old posts...it's like a stroll through the garden of this
newsgroup!  Anyway, I came across your post about Frank jumping up to
open the tin of cat food, and digging in with his paws.  I don't know
if you
read my recent post telling almost the exact same story about Caitlin
(RB)!  Let me see
if I can link this thing:

Okay, here is the weirdest thing one of my cats ever did, perhaps apart

from the curious birding incidents which I just related in another
post.....as soon as she was grown enough to jump up to the kitchen
counter, she would use it as a launch pad to the top of the fridge and
from there she would knock down the half-filled can of cat food which
had been placed there after breakfast, waiting to be served at dinner
time.  Well I would come home from school and find the can sitting
upright in the middle of the living room carpet, stony bony empty and
this was a five inch tall can which, as anyone knows whose kitty was
silly enough to try, will not fit a cat's head.  So how was she getting

the food out?  And the plastic lid off, which was a good sealed fit?

After knocking it off the fridge, she would roll it from the bare
kitchen floor (I finally spied on her and saw it done) with her paws
into the living room where she could use the leverage of the can
against the carpet to slowly push it upright.  Then she would peel off
the plastic lid with her paws, and start digging in USING HER PAWS LIKE

A SCOOP (just like a raccoon).  She would eat right out of her paws,
without dropping the food, till it was empty.  I have no idea if she
would share with the other cat, who otherwise must have watched this
performance with some dismay since she was an ordinary cat's cat who
would never stoop to using her paws for anything other than swatting
me.

No one ever believed me, unless I showed them, and yes, she would
consistently do it even when I had a whole room full of people there
just to see her do it!!

Marina:

I hope that I have not done something in poor taste by referring to
an old post about a loved and departed old friend.  It is only that
I was so wowed by the similarity of the two stories I could not help
relate to the story of my own loved and departed old friend.
Is that okay to do that or
have I committed a gross NG gaffe?

Oh, I don't mind at all, and as far as I know, newsgroup etiquette does
not prohibit it either. I'm very happy to share my happy memories of
Frank. He was a very wise and gentle fellow.

Mimi (RB) did that, too.  She would also dip her paw in glasses of
milk or water, and lick it off.

I sorely regret not buying a video camera at the time.
I was just a poor struggling student in those days.
It was high entertainment though, even for my
friends who did not like cats, it was worth
seeing.  Everyone kept saying the same remark:
"You should make a deal with Purina or someone,
they would pay big money to make a commercial
with a cat that can do this"
Since it was two decades before computer animation
they might have been right, too!

Oh, yes! Caitlin would have been a star. And she to have been very
intelligent.

This thread reminds me of Max.
He'd get an unopened can and bring it to me.
Been over four months now and I miss him just the same.

When Sarrasine was a kitten she would open bags of kibble and scoop the
contents out with her paw- she even worked out that if she licked her
paw first more kibble would stick on it.

She also once retrieved her new food bowl from a bag in the bedroom
when I threw the old one away and was teasing her about it's absence!

And nowadays she has been known to drag bags of IAMS from the cupboard
and put them next to the bowl when she wants to be fed!!

She's my genius kitten!
