My mother-in-law's two cats do this. It started
because she generally blocks off the doors to the
living room when the Christmas tree is up, so they
can't knock off the ornaments and climb the tree.
They have discovered that by nudging the vent in
another room up, they can tunnel through and pop
up the vent in the living room anyway!
Now they do it all the time, to get in to her bedroom
and sleep.
One problem though.. one of them has gotten a little..
pudgy. So, she got stuck in one of the vent openings
a few weeks ago. They had to coax her to another
(bigger) vent to get her out.
It's the funniest thing to see, when you're sitting in the
room and a cat head pops up out of the floor.
Do anyone else's cats do this??

I have to admit that's pretty smart, and a cat head appearing out of
the vent like a little gopher *would* be funny. But I sure would be
uncomfortable about it. Can they get stuck somewhere under the floor
and not be able to get out?

I don't think so. Her house is on a crawl space, so the worst that
would happen is she'd have to crawl under there and disconnect the
vent.
She asked her HVAC guy if they could get to the furnace that way
and get hurt, he said no, there's something blocking their way,
I don't remember what.. I think maybe there's a long vertical vent
that they wouldn't be able to climb up?
Anyway, it's hilarious to watch.

I read somewhere that a cat did this and followed the vent right back to
the furnace where it perished.

I've never had a cat do this, but years ago I had a cat that crawled into a
hole in the wall (unknown to us, of course) when a contractor was installing
some pipe in my parents' home. The pipe started in the basement and ended
on the second floor, and the hole in the basement was then plastered over.
Some time later, I heard my cat crying. We looked *all over* the house, and
kept hearing this pitiful cry but could not figure out where he was.
Finally, I looked up -- and there was my cat's paw trying to push out
through a vent. My father went to the second floor and cut a hole (luckily,
it was in a closet). My cat worked his way up, started to get out, realized
that the hole was too small and backed down and clung to the edge of a
wooden support. Smart cat! My dad cut the hole larger, and out came my
furbaby. From that time on, he recognized the sound of the engine on the
contractor's truck and would go into hiding as soon as the truck pulled into
the driveway.
I really would be concerned about your cats getting into the vents, though.
They might get more ambitious and get caught somewhere in the system. Isn't
there some way that you could fasten the vent covers more securely?

That is a cute story.

I'd be uncomfortable about the vents too, but if she does close them
off, she should replace them with safer toys that they would like,
like giant cardboard tunnels and wheels for them to run on.

I had a couple cats do that! They were playing with some toys over the
vent and somehow hooked the vent with their claws and opened it! I
didn't discover it until another one of my cats kept watching the vent!
These were the return airvents, I walked over to another vent that was
connected and here was one of my cats looking at me. Cleaning the vents
later, I found a bunch of toys in there! It was like they were having a
party! I decided this was not a safe adventure so I had to secure those
vent tops. It would be just my luck that one of my cats would put a
bird in there! Sue
