sriddles@aol.com - 22 Sep 2006 16:51 GMT Do you all remember I posted two weeks ago about the cat tree DH made for the raffle prize? (Originally we were going to use it as first prize for the cat tree contest, then decided to raffle it and make a different one for the photo contest).
Anyway. We took it to the shelter 2 weeks ago to start selling chances, then was going to take it to the Bark in the Park event Oct. 14 and do the drawing that day.
Now for the terrible part. *No one* has bought a ticket. Not even one. I can't imagine what is wrong. I'm really disappointed and didn;t even tell DH, he worked so hard on it. Do you think maybe it's too big? Or maybe the rest of the cat-owner population just isn't like us on this group? I'd really like some input. Don't be afraid of hurting my feelings or anything. I'm just so puzzled about this.

If there was a way to transport it to California, I'd buy raffle tickets! I really do believe it's the most impressive cat tree I've seen, and my cats would love to have it.

It is the loveliest cat tree, and I KNOW my 6.5 (the half for an inside/outside dump who's declawed - ick - and neutered).
Smokie Darling (Annie)
Who would pay to have their cat neutered and declawed, then just dump him (he's a beautimous flame point, big mouth and all)? I wish he wanted to stay in, but he gets right at the door, and you can't stop him (believe me, I've tried). He is such a lovey boy too. Apparently, he defends himself well, or he runs really fast. He isn't beat up at all, and he's been runnin' for about 8 months.

Why can't people stick to the topic ?!?!?

I've been hoping for the opportunity! Had some lovely wild rice soup while up in Minnesota. Here's a recipe for you:
1/4 c. butter 1/4 c. raw wild rice 1/2 c. slivered almonds 1/2 c. diced onions 1/2 c. diced celery 1/2 c. grated carrots 4-1/2 c. chicken or vegetable stock 1/2 tsp. pepper 1 tsp. salt 1 Tbs. chopped fresh parsley 3-4 tsp. cornstarch 2 c. whipping cream
In a deep saucepan, cook the wild rice and almonds in butter for a minute, then add the onion, celery and carrots and saute for 2-3 minutes or until the onion is translucent. Add the stock; season with salt & pepper. Cover and simmer the soup for 1-1/2 hours. Make a slurry with the cornstarch and 1 cup of the whipping cream and gradually stir this into the hot soup to thicken. Stir in the remaining cream and heat through. Top with chopped fresh parsley and serve.

from http://www.glycemicindex.com/ they have a regularly-updated searchable database and a really good explanation of GI and GL (glycemic load)
Low GI = 55 or less Medium GI = 56 - 69 High GI = 70 or more
Low GL = 10 or less Medium GL = 11- 19 High GL = 20 or more
Low GL < 80 High GL > 120
Saskatchewan wild rice (Canada) GI=57 serve(g)=150 carbs/serve(g)=29.1 glycemic load=16.6
So it looks like, by any measure, wild rice has a medium GI - higher than regular white rice and basmati rice, but a substantially lower GL.
White rice, type not specified, boiled (Canada) GI=51 serve(g)=150 carbs/serve(g)=42 glycemic load=21.4 Basmati rice, white, boiled GI=58 serve(g)=150 carbs/serve(g)=42 glycemic load=24.4

But I'm wondering if you're offering this prize to the wrong group of people. Isn't this a dog event? Maybe most of them don't have cats.
Is there a local cat-oriented organization where you might sell raffle tickets? You could then donate the proceeds to their org.
The cat tree is large, but if there are enough people in your area with large homes, then someone should have space for it!

If you were in Philadelphia, I'd suggest that you post ads at the two cats-only veterinary practices I know about (including the one where I take my cats).
But maybe vets' offices are an additional venue to advertise in, cats-only or not. Ditto pet stores, especially the big ones like PetSmart and Petco that try to benefit local animal shelters.
You can offer raffle tix on eBay, too :); just make it a dutch auction and stipulate that the winner must pay shipping costs or pick it up in person.

Also, contact the local newspaper and see if they would donate space for an advertisement. Better yet, see if they would run an article int he paper about the raffle and the worthy purpose it serves.

Rhonda - 22 Sep 2006 18:22 GMT Sherry,
It is a beautiful cat tree.
How much were the tickets?
Someone else pointed out it was going to a dog event, that could be a big factor. Maybe if the cat people aren't planning to be at Bark in the Park, they didn't try.
Another factor could be getting it home. It's already assembled and I know we don't have a vehicle big enough to transport something that large.
Maybe if you made it a raffle at the shelter and say you don't have to be present to win, and say it will be delivered within a certain mile radius, or will be delivered for $10 if needed or something like that...
Where was it in the shelter? Was it apparent to everyone who walked in the door? Maybe make a big banner with happy, smiling cats? One guy advertises his cat trees with a picture taken straight up with a cat on the top shelf of the tree, looking straight down, and other pictures with several cats scattered around on the tree.
Good luck,
Rhonda

Had a thought, you're near Oklahoma City, right? Take the advertising there. I'm sure they have a Usenet site, and you can post a link to the picture there as well as in any Oklahoma state Usenet groups. I'd also take the advertising to Ft Sill and any other places in the area. For Ft Still, you'd have to get post permission to advertise, but it would be worth the effort.

I think it's gorgeous. I especially like that the posts are sisal. Rosie & Cinder know that the sisal is theirs to use for scratching and carpet and wood furniture legs and such are not. It's hard to find a cat tree that does not have carpet posts.
The only reason I can think that anyone with a cat would not buy a raffle ticket is that it might be too big for the space they have. However, unless they are living on a boat, they probably could make the space.
Perhaps you should look up cat trees and try to find a similar tree and put a value on it, such as "valued at $xxx." I'm sure it is worth several hundred dollars.

The cat tree looks *fabulous.* I think I would post fliers around town with a picture of the cat tree and information about how the donations would go exclusively for the cat shelter. Include a statement that the tree was custom made just for this purpose. You might even include an offer to transport the tree to the winner (within a specified distance). Like others have mentioned "Free delivery" in large letters might help, because I sure couldn't shift it with my Corolla.
But another thing to consider is: how much were you raffle tickets? Even though its a *wonderful* cat tree, I wouldn't have bought one if you were charging over $2 per ticket. Since no-one has bought one, you can drop the price if it was too high without disadvantaging anyone who had already bought on eat a higher price. $1 each or 3 for $2? After all, its not how many tickets yo sell but how much money you raise, right?
Failing that, Auction it on e-bay (with free delivery in your area) and say all the money goes to your cat shelter. You might be surprised how much you get.

I'll buy 12 tickets for a chance to win the cat tree. Now if I win the cat tree, is there a cat shelter in your area that has a "group play area" that I could donate it to? I think my group would love to have it but getting it to Georgia could be problematic. Besides, I think cats at a shelter would enjoy it as well. Send me an address to send a check.

Stormmee - 23 Sep 2006 14:53 GMT Six cats are very interested to have this WONDERFUL tree in their home. I am trying to figure out where you are with this as I am in central Illinois. Bark in the Park is everywhere from Pittsburgh to Clemson U. to California on October 14 so HELP, are you far from me?
Is there a city I can get to, is it over six foot high?
Thanks, DH of Lee

If it were *at all* feasible, I'd offer to ship it. But it weighs approximately a million pounds (it feels like it anyway!) The base is 29 inches, and it's 5.5 feet tall. Too big! What WERE we thinking! The problem is, our 5 four-legged "quality inspectors" steered us wrong. They just insisted that "bigger was better."

Would it be possible to remove some of it to make it smaller, without causing it to be less structurally sound, or having to take the entire thing apart? Maybe you could get two smaller ones out of it. Considering how big it is, the two smaller ones would probably be good-sized for most cats!
But I like the idea of selling raffle tickets, here and elsewhere, and having the winner, if he or she is out of the area, donate it to your shelter. Essentially, this would just be people making donations, unless someone in your area happened to win, and had a way to get it delivered.
Or, if you don't find a way to raise money with the tree, perhaps you and your husband could just donate it to the shelter? I think that would be a wonderful gift - not a waste of his efforts at all.

It's a magnificent creation... but looking at it the problem really is that it's too big to be practical - it's much too heavy to move even if you could find a place to put it :( It really belongs in the playroom at a cat shelter, because it looks like it has room for about twenty felines at once! (Tessie would go bananas at the sight of it but the answer would have to be no, no, no because it's just not practical!)
Irulan - 23 Sep 2006 01:00 GMT good lord, that's a gorgeous cat tree. I only have one cat but I sure would buy a ticket! Lily would love that cat tree! Lily & her mama

Put me down for ten. I'll find a way to get it up here.

That is just so nice of you all, it really gave me a boost. I was getting pretty depressed about this, which is silly I know. A fundraiser that flops isn't the end of the world. And there *is* still 3 weeks left. (I keep telling myself that). Each board member is responsible for their own project at Bark in the Park, so there will be other members' fundraisers there that will make up for it, like the dog contests, pictures with your dog, the "strut your mutt" walk-a-thon, the dog prize raffle etc. Now I"m really going to whine. (you can stop reading now). It seems like the cats always don't get a fair shake. Originally this thing was strictly a dog-event, but I thought there were enough cat owners out there that they ought to at least have some representation. I always end up being the cat advocate on the board. But There are definitely more dog people here than cat people, or it seems that way. It doesn't really matter at the end of the day though, really. All the proceeds are earmarked for building a better quarantine area. That's going to benefit the cats as much as as the dogs. So it really doesn't matter whose project makes the most money. Anyway, Katiri, if you're still interested, my email is valid. sriddles at aol dot com.
Thanks Sherry

It would be a shame if such a terrific creation went for only a couple of dollars.
Personally, I think I would love having a tree like that, but I might be hesitant to enter the raffle, because I'd be wondering how I'd get it home, and I have this odd disinclination towards games of chance, maybe from back in high school, when I was into statistics and probability (an old high school acquaintance I hardly knew called me earlier this year and told me that the thing she always remembered about me was how I rolled a penny 1000 times on a glass table to see if it was biased).

Well, *was* it biased?? :-)
You bring up a good point! I have terrible luck with games of chance/raffles. I don't think I've ever won anything!

> I have this odd disinclination towards games of chance, > maybe from back in high school, when I was into statistics and > probability You might have heard this already, but I'll tell it just in case. There's a huge computer conference that happens once a year in Las Vegas called Comdex. (Do they still have that, btw? I haven't heard anything at all about it in years.) Basically, all these computer types, including thousands of software geeks, fill up all the hotels in the city, and more or less take over the whole town for the week.
During that week, the casinos are totally dead. Geeks know better than to gamble. They know their math and they know the odds are totally against them. So the casino owners know that Comdex week is the week for all their employees to take vacations, etc.
By contrast, the sex industry is booming during that week. :)

(Originally we were going to use it as first [quoted text clipped - 15 lines] > >Sherry It looks like a great tree. I can't tell all the details from the one perspective shot; from low like that it "looks" as big as the door and I can't tell if the front piece with the two horizontal sisal wraps can be used as a ladder to climb to the next level or not. Perhaps a shot taken from a little more to the side and up a little higher that would capture more details of the front (ladder?) & rear post/perch, and put it in a different height perspective with respect to the door. Posing it with some kitties enjoying different levels and the enclosed part may help with ticket promotions too.
Good luck! Whoever does win it will be a lucky cat!
