Urgent purrs needed; Odessa's gone AWOL...

...and i don't even let my cats out.

this morning the others decided it was integration time, and all went
well. Odessa went exploring, and we haven't seen her since she ran into
the basement. I'm scared out of my mind. I know there are exposed
rafters down there and i'm scared she's somehow gone into the wall and
could starve herself or something. I am so ashamed of myself, I thought
I was being responsible to my cats. And I have learned something else
too. I can come onto this site and give lots of nice little messages to
people about praying and remaining calm, and you know what? I am
horrible at taking my own damn advice. If something happens to her I don
't know what I'll do to myself. Louie left after lunch practically
calling me everything but female for her disappearing. How can you lose
a cat in your own house? She's very small, seven pounds at the most.
Hopefully if she did get into the wall or the rafters she has the good
sense, and the good figure, to get herself out again. I'm beside myself.
I love that little girl. Please, any spare purrs for this frantic
cat-mama?

Blessed be,
Baha

Purrs are on their way, Baha.  Cats are very good at finding hiding
places, and usually they're good at getting out of them when they're
good and ready.

The evening before I had to take Skeeter for her last visit to TED, she
disappeared.  I have a cat door, so I didn't even know for sure whether
she was inside or out.  I searched both house and yard thoroughly, and
didn't find her.  I finally had to go to bed, but I was frantic, and
didn't sleep much.  The next morning my daughter came to take me to a
medical procedure.  I told her about Skeeter's disappearance, and she
did her own search.  She finally found her in the guest room closet.  It
has sliding doors, with no stops, so the door can be pushed inward, far
enough for a cat to get inside.

We're in Southern California, and you may remember we had a big
earthquake several years ago.  My daughter's cats are strictly indoor
cats, and one of them disappeared.  The next day they found her hiding
inside the back of the washing machine.

I'm betting Odessa will turn up when she wants to - probably when she
gets hungry.  In the meantime, calming purrs are coming your way.

OMG, Baha.  Don't panic (hahaha)   This is what I would do, put a plate of
yummy food in the basement, if she's hiding up somewhere she'll eat it
perhaps in the night, and you'll notice it gone.
If she can get into the rafters, she can surely get out.  Is there any way
she can get to the outside?  If not, you have an almost 100% chance of
getting her back.
She is not stupid.  If she is hungry, she'll come for the food overnight,
and then perhaps you need to think about borrowing a trap.  If she is stuck,
and has a voice (unlike Kitty) she will yowl when she cannot get out and is
hungry/thirsty.
All is not lost.  You are not a bad mommy, okay?

Purrs for her safe return soon.

Try to stay calm, Baha, Odessa will be fine.  She is probably just too
frightened to come out right now.  As soon as everyone has settled down or
gone to sleep she will creep out again to eat and use the litter box.  It's
*NOT* your fault - this sounds like a b#st%rd cat trick to me.  When cats
don't want to be found they *WON'T* be found.

Calming purrs for you and "quit scaring your mommy" purrs to Odessa.

Hugs,

I second what the others have said about her coming out for food and/or
litterbox.  For you: sit down, close your eyes, and do some deep
breathing exercises for a minute or two.  Concentrate on your breathing.
Then try a slow, careful look around.  And remember - a black cat can
hide in a slight shadow.  She could be in that corner under the bed that
you can't quite see into.  Or in the shadow of the water heater or
furnace in the basement.  Maybe if you take a book, a beverage and a
chair down there and settle in she'll come out for scritches.  Then you
can grab her and hustle her fuzzy self back upstairs.  ;-)

Purrs and tail wags coming from us.  It isn't your fault at all.
Oliver went missing this spring.  I had all but given him up for lost
when he was found behind our buffet.  He had never left the house!

I know it's foolish to make generalizations about cats, but this is a
fairly safe one:

If a cat doesn't want to be caught, or found, it won't be.  Fortunately,
this state of mind (particularly the latter) doesn't usually last more
than a few hours, if that.

You've got our best come-out-of-hiding purrs!

How long has she been missing? When Nancy and I first moved into our
place in Highland Cleopatra went missing for about half a day. We still
don't where she was - our place is very small, we searched everywhere,
but she still managed to elude us.

I suspect she'll come out of hiding when she gets hungry or lonely or
scared.

You must be absolutely beside yourself.  She just has to be OK.   Poor thing
just likely found a really good hiding place.  Prayers that she show herself
ASAP.

And I'm not asking JAke to purr on this one.  He likes to do this to me and
would likely only send her really good hiding place purrs.

PS It is sometimes easier to find a cat with a flashlight in a dark room
than it is to find one with the lights on.  They don't think to close their
eyes and they glow.

lots of purrs for Odessa to come forward!

The longest Thea was "lost" inside the house/aptmt was some 4 hrs when she
was only little and had a nap in the base of the drying cupboard .... not
much space for access there but with cats they get tthrough amazinlgy small
openings sometimes, as long as they fit their head through they don't have
the collar bones to worry about ...
And of course when they find a really good place they don't give it up too
easily and don't answer when called or come for smelly food - not until they
think it's time ...

Hey, don't blame yourself! Your kitten is hiding - that's what kittens
*do*. Especially scared, new kittens. They're really, really good at it.
I'll bet she'll come out when she's ready to. My cats, all adults, love
to hide, and I'm sure that when I'm walking all over the apartment frantically
hunting for them and calling their name, they're sitting there chortling
to themselves. Cats love this sort of thing.

I really think you're being way too hard on yourself. Other people are
right: leave out some food, and she'll come and eat it when she feels like it.

What does this mean? Was he blaming you? What do you mean by "everything
but female"?

Purrs for Odessa to come out of hiding soon and help everyone calm down!!

I think I was being defensive when I said that. He did make a comment insinuating
that I was not paying enough attention because I had the news on and lost track of
her bell and gave me a yelling about responsibility, but there was no true name
calling and nothing in the abusive sense. I'd make him eat his turban if it were
the case.. "Everything but female" is another way of saying everything in the
book.

Many thanks, to you and everyone!

LOL - I've never heard that one before.

I'm glad you've spotted her, btw! (Saw your other post.)

Purrs that she'll come out from hiding soon. Perhaps she's just 'sploring
and the 'sploring is far too interesting to be bothered with silly hoomins
right now. I'm sure she'll return when the hunger overtakes the curiousity.

I can understand your frantic feeling, but I suspect that this is Odessa's
first b*st*rd cat trick.
Perhaps she's been communicating with the other cats on this group.
If you leave her water and food, she'll come out.
We'll send some purrs your way, just for good measure.

Hang in there sweetie, it will be ok.  Purrs and get your self where you
belong wishes and thoughts for little Miss Odessa.  Please keep us
posted about her and hang in there.  Cats LOVE to hide.  It's one of the
ways they experiment on us hoomins.

I'm still working my way down the list catching up, so I just read
this.  I know you caught her and I'm glad everything is fine.  But I
just wanted to say that it's really easy to lose a kitten in your own
house, so don't feel bad!
When we first got Vino, we were living in a 1 bedroom condo on the
12th floor in Vancouver.  Within an hour of getting home, Vino had
disappeared.  We totally freaked, felt guilty, thought we were
irresponsible, etc.  Looked everywhere, and there's not many places to
look in a tiny 1 bedroom condo!  Dennis even told me to go out in
front of the building and check in the trees in case he'd jumped off
the balcony and skewered himself.  Sheesh!
In the end, we found him way up inside of the corner section of our
L-shaped couch.  What a relief!  There is a longer version of the
story on Flippy's catpage if you're interested.
