Jake's Follow-up visit to TED

Jake had his follow-up visit with TED this afternoon.  He was diagnosed with
a much to rapid pulse and a heart murmur a month ago.

The meds are really working.  His pulse rate is way down and he has really
perked up over the last month.  So much so that I had to ask the vet what to
do if I missed getting his meds down him every so often.  There have been
more than a few mornings Jake was up and out before I was awake enough to
dispense drugs, and he hasn't been so quick to head back in for a long
morning nap.  Vet said that he needs half a pill a day, ideally 1/4 in the
morning and 1/4 at night.  But that just 1/2 at night is OK.

Our weather is a bit odd at the moment.  Sun is shinning and its pouring
down rain.  The first rain we've had since spring.  I'm guessing we are
catching the tail end of the storm that has been soaking Oregon.  This will
help a lot with putting down some problem fires, and with preventing some of
the fall fires we have come to expect.

Closer to home, it will settle the dust across the street.  There is a
vacant lot and dump trucks have been dropping off loads of fill dirt to
bring it up to grade for future construction.  Makes a great huge litter box
but a lot of blowing dirt whenever there was a breeze.

The rain is really coming down.  Glad I'm not a farmer who has to worry
about getting equipment into the fields and orchards for harvest.

I dread having to dose my cats with medication for this very reason.  They
are always up before I am, and outside.  It seems that one pill at night is
okay for Jake if you cannot catch him in the morning.  Lots of luck with
this.

Although there is now a litterbox in the house, and in theory it would be
okay for my cats to stay in at night, Boyfriend still freaks out if he
cannot get out all the time so I still have to leave my back door open 24/7
for him.
I am aware that this is not really safe although I live in a low crime area.

Hi Jo:

Do you mind if I ask....was that rapid pulse & heart murmur diagnosed
as hyperthyroidism or a heart arrythmia?  And what medicine is Jake on
for it?  Just curious, since my Luthien has just been put on meds for
her high heart rate (240 bpm) which turned out to be hyperthyroid.  She
gets 1/2 pill twice a day...and I have to hold her treats until I can
catch her and pill her.  She is clever enough to let me catch her for
it, though she doesn't exactly enjoy the pilling process, but she knows
what is coming right after (Fancy Feast can, sheer bribery).

Funny thing is, the baby kitten Muezza Glorio, is getting increasingly
curious about the pill, and seems to want to know why he doesn't get
one, too.  He keeps jumping up on the sofa, lately, to watch The Great
Pilling Moment.  So does my five-year-old daughter, for that matter.

He's taking Atenolol which is a beta blocker that lowers the heart rate.

I don't hear all that well and may have missed something at the vet, but was
under the impression that it was the beginning of heart failure the same as
our dog had for years.  Everything about Jake otherwise seems to still be in
prime condition.

Well, here's to Atenolol slowing the heart and buying you lots more
heartbeats for Jake, then.  If the heart failure was due to rapid heart
rate to begin with, there's a good chance that slowing it down will
reverse some of the effects, including the murmur.  If it is due to
something else, it would depend then, but slowing it down can only
help!

Good news about Jake.  And thankful for the rain in Oregon while hoping
some of it comes north to Washington where we've had fire problems
ourselves.
