The cat tree is just about finished. (this is the one that's going to
be 1st prize in the "Purrfect Pet Cat Photo Contest") Just a few more
finishing touches and we'll be done.

Oh my! That is one luxurious cat tree! Your DH is so talented! Wish he
could come over here and build me one. ;o) Even my Palace in the Sky
looks puny compared to that!

I must NOT let the Furballs see this! They would want one at once and
pester me until I gave in!

We don't have that much room

Holy crap!  That's amazing!  After building several of our own cat
trees, I know exactly how much work it is and how time consuming.  And
ours are nowhere near as nice or as complicated as that one!  Good job,
your hubby could go into the cat tree building biz ;-)

Wow,  have to wonder what that sucker weighs.  And how many people it will
take to move it.

I swear and promise Jake and Molly:  As soon as we finish with the inside of
the house, you guys get a fabulous cat tree.

That sucker does weigh a lot. DH & I moved it by ourselves, but we had
a 2-wheel furniture dolly. There was a scary moment when I first
thought it wasn't going to fit out the den door. The original base was
24', but I thought we ought to make it at least 30" for stability. DH
nearly got to say "I told you so." The perches are at 5', 5.5' and 6'.
It won't tip over for sure. Now I"m thinking maybe we got carried away
and shouldn't have made it so big. But I wish there was some way to
make one not be so heavy. Maybe someone has some suggestions about
that. I wonder about using that really thick cardboard for the perches.
Particle board weighs nearly as much as regular wood.
I do hope it makes the shelter some money though. The total material
cost was $23 + the turbo scratcher. Everything else was donated.
Tickets are $1 each.  We should make a good profit if a lot of people
buy tickets.

Good Lord woman! Go into business! YOu could make a huge profit margin off
that.

Unfortunately, donations aren't so easy to come by if you're making them
for profit. I found out the same thing when I helped to build some cat
trees as a benefit for a rescue group. Carpet places, lumberyards, and so
on, are happy to give you their scraps if you're building something to
raise money for a good cause, but they probably sell them to the general
public.

We were building ours to be sold, not raffled. But maybe we should have
chosen the latter. I seem to remember that the group had a really hard
time getting anyone to buy them. But that might also have been because
most of us doing the building were not professionals, and in fact, we
were quite inexperienced. We had one or two real carpenters show up a
couple of times to give direction and consultation, but basically we did
most of the work. It kind of showed. :)

These cat trees were made from actual boughs that we got from tree-trimmers.
We mounted them onto a square base on the floor, tacked carpet to pieces
of wood and placed those on the branches as platforms, wrapped sisal around
the "trunk", and so on. So the cat trees were a bit... unstable. Also, they
were oddly shaped, so although they looked great, they would have been hard
to fit into someone's living room, unless that person had a huge living room.

I think a raffle is better because you can easily find people to spend
a couple of dollars. But nobody wanted to sink $250 into an impractical
cat tree built by amateurs. If I ever build one again, there will be NO
tree boughs! 90-degree angles only. :)

Sherry, that is the most amazing cat tree I've ever seen. If your
DH decides to market them and mass produce, I want to be on your
mailing list for advertizing!

Good luck with the fund raiser.  If that doesn't make a you
hundreds of dollars, I can't think of what would.
