Poor thing! I read about that and thought it had escaped from the zoo,
that's the general vicinity. The animals have good lodgings at the
zoo--I hate zoos--but at least this one does try to emulate the
animal's natural habitat and give them a lot of space.
Then I found out it belongs to an individual who just owns exotic
things. He was probably trying to hitch-hike back to Oz.

I thought it was illegal to keep "exotic" animals as pets!
(At least in the U.S.A., a kangaroo has to be considered
"exotic" - you aren't likely to have any opportunity to
rescue an abandoned joey, here.)

Oh gosh no, not here. All they need is a license. There are way too
many people IMO keeping exotics. Even lions & the other big cats.

It's easier to keep an exotic than it is to keep a native species,
native species being strictly prohibited.  It depends on the laws of
your state and city.  There are species you can't import, being either
endangered or dangerous.  The rock and roll musician Joe Savage had a
leopard that killed his own daughter almost 20 years ago, leopards
being legal in Tennessee at the time.

I think the General Assembly outlawed dangerous animals after that.
You used to hear about someone's pet lion getting loose every once in
a while.  When I was a child the local W. T. Grant store had ocelots
for sale in the pet department, right next to the goldfish, which puts
at least a nod to cats in this article.

One of my high school classmates was killed shortly after graduation by
a tiger.  The animal belonged to his uncle, who owned a wildlife
park/mini-zoo.

The tiger broke his neck clean; no other marks on him.

The theory is, kitty was playing a little too rough, gave him a paw
tap, and the way it hit killed him instantly.  It never intended to
maul him.  He had been helping to look after the animals since he was
13.
