We've had an increase in the spats between Smokey and Mistletoe.  It
used to be one every 3-4 weeks and now is increasing to once per week or
so.  As yet, there's been no blood drawn, but when they get into it, it
sounds like mortal combat with the winner about to dine on the loser's
innards.

I can't tell if Smokey (17YO) or Missy (7YO) starts it.  It doesn't seem
to be food related as Missy rarely finishes her food and doesn't seem to
mind Smokey finishing it for her.

The kids have been together for 6+ years with both sharing "you leave me
alone and I'll do the same for you" attitude.  However, in the last few
months, the spats are becoming more frequent.

I'm thinking about a Feliway diffuser as some here have reported much
success with them.  However, I'm open to other ideas that you folks have
found to work.

Thanks!

You should definitely start out with the addition of a feliway
diffuser or two. I sure know about the awful fights between
kitties.  Since this has just started, try to make them both feel
good while with you; this can make them feel good together. Give
them treats together, get them playing with something together with
you, like a feather toy. When they are playing with the feather toy
and getting along, give them both treats that they both like. Try
not to yell at the aggressor while the play session is going on,
even if the aggressor is attacking the other. Try to make play
session just that... PLAY...

Other than that, I don't know what else.  I wish I could have
stopped Shamrock's aggression with Bonnie, but I didm't see it
start.

Thanks, Cheryl.  We're not able to see when the spats start - they
always go elsewhere in the house to go at it but once the fight's on, it
sounds like all-out war (and they'd use WMD if they had'em).  We'll
start with a couple of diffuser and go from there.

Well, that's what i was going to suggest. Also, maybe Smokey needs some
"me" time. Could you set up a room with all the accoutraments and toys,
window etc. and just let them have some vacation time from each other?
Also, sometimes adding a  couple of tall trees helps because it adds
territory and "safe" places?

They don't spend much time together.  On occasion, one will *demand* the
cat tree occupied by the other and will use the nastiest language to one
another but mostly it's mutual ignoration.

Does one of them always attack the other, or do they both do the
attacking? I tend to try and protect Miranda because she is so much
smaller than Caliban, and she also makes the most awful noises when they
wrestle, making me think she is being hurt. But a moment after I have
broken them up, I see her going after Caliban. She initiates as many
fights as Caliban does, so it does seem like they both enjoy it. Is it
possible that Smokey and Missy are just playing, though it may look bad?

Well, they're much too smart to let us see them start (or finish, for
that matter).  They make sure we're "somewhere else" before they go at
it.  I suppose it *could* be aggression-at-play, but it surely doesn't
sound like it.  With all the hissing going on, it sounds like there's an
uncapped air compressor going off.

Is/has one of them been ill recently? I've found if the 'top' cat has
been unwell then the next in line can become more aggressive in an
attempt to become no.1.
