A conversation before dinner

Caliban is hungry, and he is laying on top of the cat tree making small
meeping noises. Usually I meep back to him with the same small voice,
but now I decided to see what he would do if I replied in a completely
different voice. He said 'meep', I said 'moooww'. He said 'meep' again,
and I replied with 'MEOWWWW'. He looked at me with a shocked expression
and said 'meep?' I said 'YOOOWWWW'. He said an even smaller 'mip?'

Suddenly I hear 'MEEEEEER' from the floor - Miranda had come in and
joined the conversation.

I hope I didn't say anything too offensive to Caliban.

ROFL! Thank you (I think) for translating that.

LOL
Why MARINA!! I had no idea you KNEW words like that! =o) I'm shocked,
SHOCKED I tell you! Even Mir was telling you your language was right
out of line.  It would be funny to know if Caliban was more meek around
you after this, or if he'll think twice before asking for his supper
early again. But you're his hoomin, I'm sure he won't hold it against
you.

Nina and Francesca are both talkers, especially when I get home from
work or really from anywhere, and they expect supper to be served up.
pronto. Nina makes a very cute little chirping noise that sounds rather
like  "Mee'ee". A mere verbal translation doesn't do it justice, it
sounds like something between a kitten mew and a bird chirp. She
usuallly makes it when she's checking things out.  It's earned her the
nickname "Baby Bird" Francesca is most vocal when I can't resist the
urge to pick her up and she asks to be put down. She has a rather
growly voice and sounds a little like Lotte Lenya. And she doesn't like
to be held, much preferring to be her own cat.

They're so cute.  Most cats I've met like being picked up, at least
some of the time.  They seem to consider it desirable attention, and a
nice change of scenery.  When I would pick up or hug Betty, she would
say, "Murf", as though it was hard work being held.  Does Nina like
being held more than her mom?

A LITTLE more. Sometimes, she'll curl up in my arms very happily,
knowing she's about to get a lot of affection and attention and turns
her head very obligingly for ear scritches. Other times, she really
DOESN'T want to be held, and will  just about climb me (using her claws
painfully, of course) to get out of my grasp. Francesca will tolerate
the liberty as long as I support her hindquarters, but she gives me
this look of "The minute you let go, I am SOO out of here!"

LOL!  I wish I could have a conversation with mine.  KFC can hardly speak,
she has always been like this.  She does not meaow at all, she just opens
her mouth and no sound comes out.  Although she did manage a little "meh"
today when shown her renal food pouch.
Boyfie will meaow only when he wants to alert me to something, like "my bowl
is empty, fill it"  or "the door is shut, open it."

Lizzie will occasionally let out a tiny lettle "meep", unless very agitates
(read: pissed off big time), then she will yeowwwwwwwwwwwl, growl, hiss, and
if you happen to be holding her or just too close to her, scratch and bite
(no broken skin with the bites, but man, it hurts)

Over here, us 'merkans spell it "meow"

Rusty is similar. He is the quiet type. He complains when his dinner is
late or he thinks I
am ignoring him. When I first adopted him, it took days before I heard
a meow out of him.

Vino is the opposite.  He's very vocal.  He has to put in 2 cents worth
in all the time.  When I was first speaking on the phone with the lady
who I got him from (before the litter was even born) she proudly
announced that her kittens are very quiet and do not meow.  LOL!  What a
liar she was!  Not that I care.  I figure a cat has the right to express
himself vocally.  As long as it's not while I'm trying to sleep ;-)

Can Caliban say anything besides "Meep"? :)  How funny that Miranda
can say her own name.

He can trill, and his meep varies in pitch and length, but it's always
very small. I know he can make a deeper sound, because sometimes he
yowls in his sleep ( I suspect he has nightmares). It can be very eerie
in the middle of the night when all are sleeping peacefully, and
suddenly we hear a long deep yoooooowwwwwl. I've woken to that sound
many a time.

Of course she can. She has a great vocabulary.

Mine never shut up, it seems :)  After my thesis is done, I should do a
Mau-English dictionary :)

My crew walk away looking slowly back at me whenever I bark at them.  Speedy
apparently doesn't like my accent, as he hides his face in his paws and
whines at me.  If I keep it up and yip in a high enough voice, he'll howl at
me, then I howl back.  The cats look at me as if embarrassed.
