Lacey is sooo sick

Julie Cook - 24 Aug 2006 03:46 GMT My Lacey-Bug has a such a bad head cold and she is so miserable. She can't breath through her nose and today she began making a little puffhh noise as she breathed out through her mouth. It sounded like she was pushing her breath out of her lungs and she'd begun to drool. So of course I bundled her up and took to TED for the second time in two days. Her temp had gone up to 103 from 102 yesterday, still not too high, her lungs still sound clear and her heart sounds fine. She was slightly dehydrated so she got subQ fluids and a shot of benedryl. We've started her on antibiotics in case of an infection.
When Sam was sneezing they gave me Chlorpheniramine tablets which is an antihistamine. I was warned with him that it was extremely bitter and if he bit into it and tasted it he would foam at the mouth. Foaming at the mouth was an understatement! Anyhow, I was told to use this with her tonight. I tried to give it to her by myself and it was a disaster. At least before she started foaming she spit the pill out so that I knew she hadn't taken any. When Rusty got home he wrapped her in a towel and held her. I put butter on the pill and got it down her throat.
I'm not sure it's helped any. She's still having trouble breathing and she's still drooling. I just feel so very sorry for her. I was told it would take 10 - 14 days to resolve <sigh>. They told me I could bring her in anytime if I felt she needed more subQ fluids. If she doesn't get better I'll probably take her back on Saturday. We've been relegated to the back door into a back "isolation" room. This is probably a smart move since this is obviously a contageous cold.
Anyhow, if there are any spare purrs could Lacey get a few? She is just such a miserable little girl right now.

Poor little thing, having to breathe out her mouth and get bitter meds.

Poor little thing, having to breathe out her mouth and get > bitter meds. Thanks Tak, the Vet tells me that since the boys have already had it they'll have developed immunity to this particular bug and won't get it again. I hope that's true because I'd hate for Sam to be this sick - except when Sam had it I was able to give him Albuterol and Flovent which is a steroid so I think that helped him.
She's so tiny and petite even though she weighs 10 lbs right now, but when she sneezes she sneezes about 10 times and her entire body shakes with each sneeze. Its just heartwrenching to watch and know there isn't anything I can do to help.
I wonder if anyone has any experience with Vick's vapor plugins. I used this once with Sam and it seemed to help some when he was having trouble breathing. I've done a web search and I don't see anything to indicate toxicity. As a matter of fact in most cases I've read it as a deterrent for chewing on things like cords and furniture so it must not be toxic. I just wonder if it would help in any way.
I appreciate your purrs and concern, Tak. <hugs>

Also when a fur kid is stuffed up, sitting the the bathroom holding then while you steam the room up with the shower works just that same as it does with a bare kitten.
I can't count the number I times I've done that with both.

Last night I used a Vick's vaporizer that I have and she actually came out of the room - maybe because she didn't like the smell. This morning she was still sneezy and drooling. I'm concerned about mouth ulcers at this point. I managed to get another antihistimine and her antibiotics down her before I left for work. I hope she gets alot of rest today and feels better tonight. I appreciate the purrs.

Mischief - 24 Aug 2006 04:53 GMT Awwww poor thing got an Upper Respiratory infection. Poor thing!!!
Keep up the antibiotics!!
The antihistamine will help some. it's like taking a benedryl when you have a head cold. it will help the symptoms.
But the best thing is to keep them separated, keep them warm and pour on the TLC.
Oh, btw, don't be surprised if Lacey doesn't want to eat. If cats can't smell, they normally don't eat.
Keep an eye on her and give her a scritch for me.
Mischief sends warming and get well purrs to Lacey too!

And give her some extra TLC from me, too. It's horrible when they're sick.

Unfortunately, she was mad at me for giving her medication and she refused to eat. Hopefully she ate it after I left. I'll make sure she knows some of the TLC is from you and Rita.

Julie Cook - 24 Aug 2006 15:43 GMT > Awwww poor thing got an Upper Respiratory infection. Poor thing!!! > [quoted text clipped - 14 lines] > > Kristi Thanks Kristi. When we got home yesterday from the vet (after getting fluids) she went straight to the dry food so I quickly opened a can of food for her which she ate with gusto. This morning she didn't want to eat so I warmed her bowl slightly and presented it to her. Unfortunately, she was mad at me about the meds so she turned her back on the food. Hopefully she ate it as soon as I left the house.
Thanks for the purrs from you and Mischief.

She can't > breath through her nose and today she began making a little puffhh noise as > she breathed out through her mouth. /// When I had kittens with flu, I found steam inhalations helped enormously. Get a bit bowl of boiling water (DO NOT ADD ANY DECONGESTANTS TO THE WATER AS THIS CAN GIVE ULCERS) and hold her over it with a towel over her head so she inhales the steam. Hold her there for as long as she'll tolerate it, and then wipe her eyes and nose.
It helped the kittens tremendously.

One of the things the Vet mentioned was not give her decongestants but she didn't tell me why. Now I know. Yesterday when we went into the vet she looked into Lacey's mouth for ulcers because she was drooling. She said she didn't see any although her tongue was looking a little glistening. She's drooling much more today. Is there something I can look for to make sure she doesn't have ulcers?
Thanks for the purrs, Julie and Lacey

LOL, I'm trying to imagine a cat putting up with this! :) She would have to be pretty sick to tolerate a towel on her head, unless she's the weird exception cat who *likes* having a towel on her head. :) (For everything you could name that "cats don't like", there's always at least one cat who does like it. :))
When Roxy had a major head cold like that, back when she was about 6 months old, I put her in the bathroom with a vaporizer running. She was feeling lousy enough that she would just rest on the towel I put down for her until I got home from work.
I put a little peppermint oil in the vaporizer - that's supposed to help a bit with sinus trouble. I don't know if it did, though.

She's a tough old bird, though, and is still cracking jokes and making everyone *else* feel better. The reason no-one has heard from her is that her computer went keyboard-up and hasn't been able to send or receive e-mail or newsgroups for a long time.
She's recuperating at her daughter's place, but would welcome purrs (and ifyou know her snail mail addy, I'm sure someone is collecting her mail).
Wilson, I gather, has had to go back into the cattery until Jean is well enough to look after him herself.
Reminds, I ought to give her a ring.
