Bagheera's First TED Visit

Baggy went to the vet this morning for the first time since he's owned
me. He had his first injections and neautering before he lived here.
Today he had his annual booster and had a microchip implanted. The chip
is one of the new type which shows the animals body temperature on the
scanner, it was the first one my vet had used, she said it was slightly
larger than the regular chip but baggy didn't even flinch when she put
the needle in. Baggy seems completely unphased by the trip, he's just as
purry and happy as ever. Hopefully it will be another year before he
sees TED again.

What a brave lad he is! I'm interested in what you say about  new chips that
tell the body temperature, I never heard of them before.  I'm thinking of
getting Boyfriend microchipped, as if he had been, his poor ex-owners would
know what happened to their pet.
He needs to get just a bit more confident before he takes another trip to
TED. I hated taking him to be neutered because he wailed so much on the way
there and back that it almost broke my heart.
I shan't bother with getting Kitty FC done at her age.  It's difficult to
prise her away from the fire, except for toilet duties now that winter is
approaching. It's very doubtful that she intends to go *anywhere.*
Wait until I go back to work in about three weeks.  They'll both have a
shock :-( as I've been at home for nearly a year.

I read about the new chips in "The Cat", the magazine sent to members of
"Cats Protection" I would imagine that most vets will change over to yhe
new type chips if they have to replace their scanners, as it it makes it
*much* easier to take an animal's temperature. The vet told me you're
supposed to leave the thermometer in the rectum for a whole minute, not
easy with some animals. I only got the new type because I asked about
them, the vet is using up her stock of standard chips before using the
new ones. In future they will probably become standard. Hopefully Baggy
will never know what it's like to have a thermometer where the sun don't
shine. ;-) If you're going to have BF chipped it's definately worth
asking your vet for a thermo chip.

Thanks very much for this info, Adrian.  I *am* going to have BF chipped,
but not quite yet. He rarely goes far away now since he had the snip.  I'll
definitely asked for a thermo chip when I take him next.
There's a thermometer used for humans - I had it done in hospital - where
they put something in your ear for only about a second, and get an immediate
temperature readout.  I wonder why they can't use something like this for
animals too?  A minute with something cold and glass up the posterior must
seem like a long time to a cat.  My dogs RB tolerated it, but only because I
used to tell them that they had to "hold still" and they were all very
obedient to this command. Wouldn't work on a cat though ;-)

Actually, there is a vet version - my vet uses it. Seems like the way
to go, to me, as they get the temperature and check the ears at the
same time.

My TED uses the animal version of the ear thermometer.  He says it's a
lot politer and safer for both hoomin and animal.  I like Doc Stevens,
as do all the cats, except Pine Cone who was spoiled at our previous TED
which had an all female staff.  PC LOVES the womens.

What a good boy! That chip sounds interesting. Does it actually mean he
doesn't have to be prodded where the sun don't shine to have his temp
taken? What a great idea.

Yes that's exactly what it means. I hope they become standard in the
future.
