I'm sitting at the computer, which is in a wooden armoire in our study.
I have my right foot on the edge of the wood, so that my heel is kinda
hanging in the air. I feel whiskers and a paw with claws. I look down
and see Rufous pawing my heel. I say "silly Rufous, that's just my
foot!" and keep on reading the group. But Rufous insists on "hunting" my
heel. Until I pick up my foot. And see a roach right behind my heel. The
one Rufous has been trying to hunt for the past 10 minutes. :(

It could be worse. I used to work at an office next to a railroad
yard, and we would get the occasional critter that had come in on a
train. On one occasion, I was sitting at my desk, typing, and felt a
tickle ascending my right ankle. I reached down and shook my pants
leg, and a large roach fell out of my pants. I stomped it before it
could run away. It was about two inches long, larger than the local
roaches generally get, so I suspect that it had come in on a train
from the Gulf Coast. I am just glad that it didn't get higher up my
leg before I realized what was happening, or else I would have been
doing an impromptu striptease.

Something I'm sure your co-workers would have enjoyed immensely! :)
You would join the ranks of such people as Bev's cousin Jack. (That was
his name, right? Was he a cousin by marriage?) Speaking of which, I am
unable to find the Ollie stories on Flippy's cat page. What section are
they under, Flippy?
My sympathies, John, that sounds disgusting! Remind me never to work
near a train station. I like the small bugs in my neck of the woods!

Was this a cockroach? Is that what you mean by "roach"? Wow, I've never
seen one.
I really like insects but might draw the line at having cockroaches in the
house as I understand an infestation of them is difficult to get rid of and
they poo on your food. Is that right?

Thankfully it's years since I saw one, hopefully I won't see any more.

I'm with you on that wish. Many years ago (1946-51) I worked at the State
Capitol. That place was alive with cockroaches -- some of them 4 inches
long. There was a closet off the room where I worked and the employees
used to put their lunch sacks there. Often they would forget them and
quite a few were there. One day, I decided to clean out the closet. When
I picked up the first sack it rattled. I looked in and saw about a dozen
cockroaches -- big ones. In the restrooms the roaches his under the
toilet seats. One morning I opened my desk drawer and guess what
? Big roaches. It didn't seem to bother the other employees but it
freaked me out. After I left, I heard they got rid of the restaurant in
the building which, of course, was a major problem. I often wonder if
they ever really cleaned it. It is undergoing a major overhaul now.

AAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!
What state was this? Please don't say California. :)
Actually, I'm pretty sure it wasn't - sounds more like Florida or
someplace like that. Must be in the southeastern USA, where it's warm
and very humid. Roaches do seem to like humidity. I haven't seen
very many since I moved to CA, probably because it's more arid here
than in Massachusetts.
But 4 inches? That makes me dizzy. Sounds like the Florida "palmetto
bug" to me.
Working in 1946-51, eh? I guess you're in my parents' generation. I
was still in two halves during those years. :)

Someone who worked a while in Washington said the House office
building is full of cockroaches - the six-legged kind. There
must be an affinity between government and insect life.

Nasty, nasty critters. They come from the outside and then the cats play
with them until they die. Sometimes they get eaten too.
