My mom has been bothered by a severe lack of balance and
equalibrium for several years now. Her PCP has done tests; MRI, CAT
scans, etc. Nothing found, no relief from it. She's had such a hard
time balancing herself that she's fallen several times, once flat
on her face when weeding the garden. She's an active lady going on
70, and this has impacted her enjoyment of life in her retirement.
My dad doesn't let her drive to busy places, even though her
imbalance is usually only bothersome while standing up.

She recently changed doctors to find someone who can figure out
what is going on, and while waiting for scheduled tests, was
assigned to a physical therapist to see if improving her balance
would help.  She had extensive tests done today, but it seems to
have all boiled down to her sinuses! She said the tests were
grueling, and that part of it included inflating "balloons" in her
ears which couldn't be done because her sinuses were too inflamed
and congested. Other than seasonal inflamation, she's never had
reason to think her sinuses had any kind of chronic issues. She has
an appointment with a neurologist Friday to follow up with other
possibilities, and I suppose they will discuss the sinus problem as
being the possible cause. I feel grateful that it could be
something so simple, and they are so far recommending Clariton D
for treatment.

Purrs for my mom would be appreciated! She's a one-of-a-kind lady.

I think Kenzie can spare a few for your Mom, too.

Sure would be nice if it's something that (relatively) simple, and I
would hope, also easy to treat, as well.

Absolutely, many purrs to your mom!

I've had balance issues from sinus and inner ear trouble.  It's the
pits.  (I don't recommend riding a chair lift at a ski resort when
you're having rare, brief, but intense moments of vertigo -- I don't
recommend it even though I've done it.  No guard bar, either.)

And I've had balance issues from the scleroderma in my neck. Lots of
surprising things can affect your balance.

I guess that's why they've had such a hard time zoning in on the
exact problem. I'm glad she got a new doctor.

Thank you all for the purrs for my mom.

Purrs for your mom. I presume the doctors checked her ears for fluid. I
sometimes got
fluid in my ears which affect my balance.

Purrs on the way for your mom. Mine has been suffering from back pains
all summer, and she stopped taking pain meds because she says they wreak
havoc on her tummy, though she was only taking paracetamol in the first
place. The back is better now. When it was worst, it took her half an
hour just to get out of bed in the morning. The tummy trouble continues.
Might be something completely unrelated.

Purrs for your mom, too. I know how close you are! One thing my mom
always jokes about is that she's not on a ton of medication like many
of her friends are. She tends to keep to herbal supplements if
possible, especially after the hormone cocktail for menopause that
doctors back in the day swore by.

Has she been to an ENT yet? (Ears Nose Throat specialist).  I had a
sudden severe vertigo problem recently, and he fixed it up right away.
It was amazingly simple.

Yes, she had been to an ENT.  The new doctor ordered a test that
others probably should have a long time ago, but didn't. Her tests
from yesterday was an ENG.  I had to look it up to find out what it
is, but now I see why she said it was grueling.

I'm glad your problem was solved so quickly! :)

Cheryl, that is *exactly* what happened to my MIL when she was about
75. Only the first doctor could not pinpoint the cause, but he sent a
report to the DMV, and they took her driver's license away! It took
another doctor to diagnose her, and he also helped her get her license
back. She is around 86 now I think.

They took away her license? Well, I'm glad she got a correct
diagnosis, and is doing better now!

Thank you all of you. I know she'll be better treated with the
(finally) right diagnosis. I guess we'll know by next week. *fingers
crossed*.

She's still making the felted cat beds, too!  Every time she meets
someone who has cats (her new physical therapist is the latest) she
decides she has to make another bed.  LOL  She's such a good un-owned
slave.

That sounds so much like the classic symptoms of an "inner
ear infection" that I would mistrust any doctor who didn't
either check for it him/herself, or immediately send me to
an ear, nose & throat specialist!

Twenty years or so ago, I had an inner ear infection which, although
it didn't last long, left me with a tendency towards vertigo anytime I
turned my head too quickly.  After a couple of months of this, I had a
routine visit scheduled with my general practitioner, and mentioned
this problem to him.  He immediately called a colleague who
specialized in Ear/Nose/Throat issues, and described the problem to
him.  That doctor told me a self-treatment to try, which cleared the
vertigo up within about a week.

The technique involved deliberately triggering the vertigo by sitting
on the edge of a bed, and lying down on my left side, sitting up,
lying down on my right side, sitting up, etc., for about 10 minutes at
a time.  The explanation that the ENT specialist gave me was that
balance is sensed by small chambers in the inner ears, with fine hairs
(cilia) surrounding small crystals.  As you change position, the
crystals shift about and press on the cilia; nerves at the base of the
cilia then report this information to the brain.  Ear infections can
cause some of these chambers to change shape, so the brain gets
confused by the fact that not all of the chambers are reporting the
same information.  The much lying down and sitting up again presents
the brain with so much data that it basically discards how it had been
interpreting the sensations, and recalibrates your sense of balance.

The reason for doing this while sitting on a bed is so that, if you do
lose your balance and fall over, you will land on a padded surface and
won't hurt yourself.  Don't try repeatedly leaning forward, or you may
suddenly end up face down on the floor.

THe problem is called BENIGN PAROXYSMAL POSITIONAL VERTIGO (BPPV), and
I have it too.  I've tried the self-treatment, and it just made me sick
to my stomach. I had a treatment at the ENT doc's, with an audiologist,
who laid me down on a table with my head hanging off the edge, while
she s-l-o-w-l-y turned my head from one side to the other. Then I had
to wear a neck brace for 48 hours.  (had to sleep sitting up, too).  It
was dreadful, and the collar was *hot*, but it worked, and I've been
nearly dizzy-free for months now.

It's amazing that something that feels like a sudden stroke is so
simple to fix.

I guess you, more than most of us, can empathize with a cat who's stuck
wearing an e-collar! :)

I had terrible vertigo years ago when I had flu. Hopefully now that the
doctors know what the problem is with your mom they can fix it quickly
and easily.
