Cats stalking large game

There have been some recent cat food commercials on TV showing cats
stalking/ chasing large game.  Yeah, right.

Well, just such a thing played itself out in my back yard Sunday
evening: two of my cats stalked, and spooked, one of the four deer
that were grazing in my back yard - closer than I have ever seen
before (the closest was about 60 feet from the back door).  I was able
to get three poor but usable pictures and I made them into a web page:

Ha - better make sure you don't get any *bigger* kitty cats in your
yard, attracted by the very same deer! I just finished reading a book
about this subject, where people living on the edge of wilderness
had deer (and other animals) chomping on the vegetation in their yard,
until a little *too much* nature, in the form of mountain lions,
appeared in the yard. They had followed the deer, but once they were
there, they began to take interest in the family pets, and eventually,
the families themselves. I don't know where "UMR" is, but if it's in
the western US, it's something to think about...

UMR = University of Missouri - Rolla

We don't have mountain lions ... or mountains either, just foothills
of the Ozarks.  We do have coyotes.

My back yard is near the edge of civilization: a few miles of woods
and pastures, then a road, and one part of the Mark Twain National
Forest.

BTW, two deer were in the side and back yard tonight, but none of the
cats were interested.  I was, and watched them until it got too dark
to see.

Ah - thanks.

Actually, they live in all kinds of terrain, so the name is a misnomer.

Here's an article about mountain lions in Missouri. I don't think you'll
need to start packing a shotgun just yet... :)

LOL! Some cats just believe they are Big Cats. Here's my sister's cat
Linus, driving away a young elk who came too close to our house on the
island one summer. Very poor pictures, but they're scanned from poorish
photos.

You're right, there's not a lot of detail, but you can tell that Linus
is fluffed up as big as he can be.

Much more sensible, but Linus is such a macho cat, he probably couldn't
live with himself if he hadn't driven away that elk (the elk was leaving
anyway, but Linus is convinced that he drove it away). Linus is the cat
who grew false nuts when he'd been snipped, just to look more manly. ;o)

I sometimes daydream about somehow setting up a scheme to provide good
and even flash lighting over much of my back yard ... over about an
acre.  I miss so many potentially interesting pictures because it's
too dark when the animals come and they are too far away to use flash
from the house.

Yum!!! I love venison and elk. I ate elk a couple of times when we were
in Colorado. My MIL couldn't understand how I managed to eat elk after
watching them running around at the park. :)

LOL!  I love venison.  A friend once asked me, "How can you eat Bambi!!?"  I
replied, "In a nice stew with salt and pepper!"

Sounds good to me. I see a deer or elk, I don't think "oh how pretty",
I think about recipes. :-)

Oh, you guys. We spent the day yesterday planting winter peas in the pasture
behind the house for the deer. They come up in the winter, as many as eleven in
a herd, and they are just so beautiful it takes my breath away. OK, I know they
destroy crops. I know they're a traffic hazard. But deer season starts pretty
soon here, and just wait till I catch a tresspasser hunter. I turn into the
bitch from hell with no apologies.

Atta girl, Sherry, I'm with you! You and other deer partisans might
like to read what I wrote about Jay-Jay, our close relatives' kitty,
and some friendly deer who visit him on my folks' property.

That's cute! BTW, your folks' place looks beautiful. If I was a deer I'd want
to live there too.

On behalf of Jay-Jay, thanks! I e-mailed your comment as well as
Theresa's and Sherry's to my folks (Jay-Jay's humans). If they read
them to him he'll be a kitty with one swelled head!

Don't get me wrong, I love watching deers and elk and all kinds of
critters. I would never kill an animal to eat it, unless I absolutely
had to.

Well, don't get me wrong either. I don't have a problem with people who like to
eat venison. I really hate the deer hunters here though. They don't ask
permission, and they'll cut your fences to get in. MOst of them are just
yay-hoos, and the worst of the bunch is the bow-hunters. I'm sure they wound
*many* more than they kill.

There should be an open season on that type of "hunter".  They don't deserve
the title.

I've seen a couple of those commercials.  They're funny.

In the third photo, is the kitty that looks like it's 'going in for
the kill' Ozy?

Yes.  Fleagor is the large gray longhair, and Ozy is the red tabby
colorpoint shorthair.  Their own pages are off my Country Cats page:
<http://gearbox.maem.umr.edu/tdavis/cats/phase2.cats.html>, but the
best picture of Ozy is on
<http://gearbox.maem.umr.edu/tdavis/cats/03.jan/index.html>, one of
the misc. pages linked at the bottom of the Country Cats page.

Now that I have discovered a web page editor that is very easy to use,
works in my context where the pages are files on a drive, and
generates code that's better than I do by hand, I expect to do better
at organizing the pictures and keeping the pages updated.  (Nvu, for
those interested - WYSIWYG, multi-platform, free, and open source:

Here's a sequence of 9 photos of Willie stalking a deer;  this was
posted to binaries 3 years ago - Willie was just having fun and the doe
was pretty non-plussed about it.  I've seen multipe cat/deer encounters
and they seem mutually curious about each other.  The only time I saw
one upset it was when one of the deer ran off a feral that was hanging
around, I assumed she could somehow tell the diference between a pet and
a "wild" cat.
http://community.webshots.com/album/26945460TwNkhOYIdg

The funniest bit between cat and deer was when I was tossing bits of
bread in front of a deer.  Max, who was behind me, suddenly charged from
between my legs and wolfed the bread:  "This is *my* hoomin!".  The deer
just backed up a step but leaned forward to smell Max.  Never saw him
eat bread before or since.

Those are really cute! Willie obviously sees himself as a big cat,
something the deer doesn't agree on. :)
