i have a story about my cat. i also need advice. i posted it on the
google cat health & behavior forum this morning and only got smarta$%
replies. it seems there's a little more traffic on this forum and
hopefully i will get more constructive advice. please send purrs to my
kitty to calm him down. also, enjoy the story and be glad your kitty
doesn't abuse you!
Yes, it's true. A little 11 pound furry man is beating me.
Panguitch is a neutered male domestic shorthair with a lot of energy.
He's almost 18 months old. He was at the vet last week for his shots
and an exam and I mentioned how feisty Panguitch can be. If he hasn't
gotten to go on his walk outside or if his sister/littermate doesn't
feel like playing, he attacks the nearest set of legs he can find.
I've managed to keep this behavior to a minimum by allowing him extra
time outside and making sure he plays with his favorite toys enough.
(This is what the vet suggested.) Yesterday, I got home from work and
decided not to let the cats out right away. My neighbor was working
with powertools and I didn't want my cats around the dangerous tools.
I settled down on the couch yesterday to make some calls. I was talking
on the
phone when Panguitch surprised me, came out of nowhere and jumped at my
face. He smacked my eye with his paw, knocking the phone out of my hand
and my contact out of my eye. Now, I have a scratch under my eye and a
big big bruise.
Suggestions? I've already put a call into the vet this morning.

Well, I'd try something like a panic mouse, on high, when you come home or
the other cat is board. Might be enough to get his energy out. YOu could
give time outs if he is too aggressive with you, putting him in a separate
room that is set up with catbox, toys and a window. Sometimes, that teaches
them to calm down.

Those folks are entirely too judgemental.
Sounds like you need to keep your kitty busy. Toys, toys, toys:) If you
can't be home all the time, give her/him something to play with in your
absence. Something to keep him/her occupied. Some folks would suggest
another cat; I'm not about to do that. My cat Persia doesn't like other
cats, no way, no how. But lots of toys to keep her occupied. Things that
jingle; things that rattle, things that roll and can be pushed around.

oooooo I'd best delte this post before Weebs sees it and his widdle heart
gets broken! I don't think he could take reading that His Precious Persia
"doesn't like other cats", even though you & I know that it *doesn't*
include Weebs ;)

Of course it doesn't include Weebs! His precious Weebs doesn't include
"other cats". I'm talking about the ones across the street that sometimes
come over on the patio to chase away the wildlife. Persia owes Weebs a
letter, too. I'll make sure she gets right on that!

I've never had this problem, but I have managed to pretty much teach
Caliban not to scratch or bite me. He still mouths at me like he is
going to bite, but hardly touches the skin. The way I taught him was
just ignore him whenever he hurt me. If he scratched by mistake I'd
squeal pathetically and then ignore me. If he bit me on purpose, I would
squeal and then ignore him for a while. I realize this might be hard to
carry in your case, and it also sounds like he is much more aggressive
than Caliban ever was. Tiring him out is the other option, like you've
been trying to do.

Not sure why you have a call in to your vet, unless he/she is also an animal
behaviouralist.
What kitty needs is some toys to play with when he's worn out the other cat.
Puffballs (or pom-poms) infused with catnip...... toy mice...... some of
mine rather enjoy plastic drinking straws (found *three* of the straws,
nicely chewed and mangled, in the bath tub this morning), and one in
particular *loves* playing fetch with bottlecaps. The metal bottle caps
from glass pop or beer bottles (no plastic ones for her!) as they make a
nice plinkety-clinkety noise on the hardwood & tile floors - plus, their
sharp edges get Mommy or Daddy's attention when placed upside down in a shoe
or house slipper!

thanks for all the good advice, everyone. my spoiled kitty has a lot of
toys, but i am definitely going to try to get a bigger variety and see
if it helps.
my vet gave me a referral for a local cat behavior specialist. i don't
know any in the area, so that's why i called the vet.
i'll post an update after i've tried some of these suggestions and
consulted the specialist. hopefully crazy kitty won't give me another
black eye. it's been a rough day at work having to explain to everyone
that my CAT is abusing me, not my boyfriend!

I'd recommend hissing, and maybe even some momma cat strength swatting when
he gets too agressive.
And a laser pointer toy. More wear and tear on the cat with little effort
on your part.

Kind of like my trying to explain the hickey on my neck,
when I had a cat who used to "nurse" on any exposed bit of
skin! (The first time or two, I didn't realize it was
having that effect, so didn't bother to stop him.)

I think it's worth adding that young cats can retain kitten-energy
levels for much longer than we were expecting, while growing to
monster proportions (see The Samazon, for example ;)). Keep him
occupied with the aforementioned bottle caps, mousies, drinking straws
(my Dante collects these) and add some wavy feather toys, and more
interactive activities-- he wants to play with *you.* He is doing
the same kind of ambush-pouncing-bopping behavior with you that he
would be doing with a kitty pal.

I'd suggest a laser pointer. A couple of mine go insane chasing the "Red
Bug", and I can run them ragged in just a few minutes.

Why didn't I think of that? Even Snoopy chases the "Red Bug" and she's
nearly 17. :-) I hope maryannk can find a solution where both she and her
cat are happy.

Otheres have made great suggestions, particularly the laser pointer
(otherwise known as 'the red dot greebling').
I'd also suggest trying feliway, it might help calm your wild beastie down
some.
Good luck,
