We apparently have a cold type virus making the rounds.  You'll remember
that Barnabus had a watery eye and sneezing. I used eye drops that resolved
his issues.  Hobbes was next and I tried the eye drops on him and he got
better.

Well, now Sam is sneezing.  This isn't an easily solved issue with Sam who
is asthmatic. This morning he was very lethargic. He wouldn't get up when he
normally does to follow DH around as he prepares for work.  He wouldn't get
up to eat. So off to the vet we went.

On physical exam he looks fine, except that he's lost 10 ounces since May.
His temp is normal, his lungs sound clear and his heart sounds strong.  He
had bloodwork and urinalysis as well.  Most of the results look good...white
blood cells are normal but some of his liver enzymes are increased.  We have
to wait until tomorrow for thyroid results but the vet suspects
hyperthyroidism.  He had some crystals in his urine although she said they
were the type of crystals that you wouldn't expect to find in an older cat.
We're sending his urine off for a more complete analysis and watching him
right now for blockage.

The vet thinks that his current lethargy and lack of appetite is a result of
a viral infection and that we were simply lucky to have found the possible
thyroid and/or crystal problems before they became a serious problem.  I
know many of you have hyperthyroid cats and I'm encouraged that this I can
control. Sam is good about taking medications so I'm sure we can deal with
this problem. I just wish he would feel better.  He's spent the last six
hours asleep on the couch. He hasn't gotten up to eat, drink or use the box.
He's definitely not feeling well.  The vet said to keep a close watch on his
breathing and administer Albuterol whenever I feel it is necessary.  Since
that helps him breath I'm giving him two puffs every 8 hours and his Flovent
every 12 hours as prescribed.

I hope this passes quickly, I hate seeing him feel so bad and quite frankly,
after Selena passing, its a little frightening.

Julie and Sam

btw, the vet asked me "You realize he has pellets under his skin?"  I
thought she was talking about little bumps that I thought were mole type
growths.  I'd felt them previously and they don't appear to grow. Well she
was talking about those bumps but they aren't moles...they are buckshot
pellets or bb's that are just under his skin! She said she was able to see
one clearly on the inside of his leg when she was taking blood. Our poor
Sammy had a tough life during the years he spent on the streets.

Purrs always.  Especially for any cat named Sam.  Sounds like he has had a
hard time of it.  Do you know how old he is?  It can be so hard to tell if
they are older than a kitten but still not elderly.

Thanks for the purrs, Jo.  I began seeing Sam about the same time Hobbes
adopted us.  Hobbes was a kitten, Sam seemed a little older. He was a mangey
looking cat and I didn't want him giving baby Hobbes any diseases.  I left
him alone with the idea someone would take care of him.  I suspect he
scrounged off the neighborhood.  He would climb a tree near our house and
sit on the roof of the house and watch the birds I fed.  Occasionally I'd
find feathers everywhere and figured Sam had managed to catch dinner.

I would think that he is in the neighborhood of 10 years old.  He's lived
inside with us for two years now since our neighbors abandonded him when
they moved.  He thought he had a one-true-home with them and he would come
to our house and then return to their garage and wait for them.  Only we
knew they had moved and wouldn't be returning.  Eventually he decided we'd
make a good one-true-family and he chose us

He's a fighter.  He's had a broken pelvis that healed without medical
intervention, a broken sternum and ribs possibly at the same time as the
pelvis.  All healed on their own.  He has a hard lump on his side.  The vet
and I were worried it might be a growth. We checked his xrays and discovered
it was a rib that had been broken and hadn't been placed end to end.  The
calcium had formed a bridge over the space between the two end of the rib.

We are dedicated to making his final years (and we hope there will be many)
as safe and comfortable as we can.

cried. I know it is silly but poor boy. He really has had to put up
with a lot :( Could she take them out? I sure hope he gets to feeling
better soon.

She didn't mention taking them out. One is near his throat, one on his side
and one inside his leg.  If they had to use anesthesia that would be tricky
with Sam's health problems.  They might be able to cut them out with a local
anesthesia.  Note to self:  Ask about removing the bb's nex trip.

If the pellets are lead, could he be developing lead poisoning?  Purrs
that a cure will be found for what ails him.   MLB

Awww - purrs for Sam and for TED to figure out what's making him feel so
terrible.  That is *so* sad about the pellets under the skin - I'm glad he
has found you.

Purrs for Sam. Poor guy! Biskit had one BB imbedded in her side. Hope
he feels better soon.

That's very understandable. Many purrs on the way for Sam. If there's
anything you want to know about hyperthyroidism, you know I have some
experience, so feel free to ask. I hope I'll be able to answer.

How terrible! Poor Sam! I'm so glad that he found a good and loving and
caring home with you, Julie. He couldn't have found a better slave.

Purrs for Sam and you guys.  I oh so well know how hard it is when
you lose one, and another gets sick so soon after. I know when Shadow
got sick within 6 months of Marley dying, I felt like a failure as a
caretaker. Sometimes these things happen.

Try Lysine mixed with his food if he eats canned food.  Get it in
capsules (Safeway sells capsules, 500 mg each) Split it into two
meals a day, and in a couple of weeks you should notice the virus
symptoms losing their grip on his health. With Rhett, who still gets
herpes symptoms from time to time (nothing like when he was a kitten,
though) I have to give him the lysine in the capsule because I can't
make canned food a staple for him.  He loves his dry.

Purrs for Sam.  Definitely a rough life.  But at least he found you.
That's one thing that went right.

Oh, {{{{Julie}}}}.  Purrs it is just one of those nasty URIs.  And
