Therefore I will be away for a couple of weeks while waiting for warranty
replacement. I used to have a spare but sold it when desperate for cash
recently. I ought to have my head examined for doing that. How do I run my
business now? I've borrowed Gloria's monitor just for tonight. Can't expect
to keep it here all the time so guess I will take my box down to her house
to work.
See you all in a couple of weeks :)

Hey Pat - if you're still here - free monitors seem to be very easy to
come by these days. A friend of mine had her monitor die a few months ago,
so I posted an ad for her on a local email list, asking if anyone had a
spare they would be willing to either give away or sell cheaply. She got
about 15 responses, most of them freebies. These folks were dying to get
rid of the things! If you're not using it, it just wastes space. And
apparently, it costs money to bring it to an electronics recycling place.
So, see if someone can give you a spare. I don't know where you live, but
if you put an ad on a bulletin board (either a real one or an online one)
I'll bet you'll get some offers.

I think I'd have a better chance if I lived in a city. The closest town to
me has 3,021 people (with 60% of the work force unemployed). I'll try it
anyway.

Check around. With everyone switching to LCD monitors and with having to
pay a surcharge to put one in a landfill you should be able to score a
temporary monitor with no problem.

When I first saw the posting, I figured your monitor lizard had passed away.
Art (getting itchy to get at least one LCD monitor but 21 inchers are Big

Hi Pat -
Sorry I can't recall where you're located. If you're close to
the Washington DC area, I have a bunch of 15" monitors, and I'd
be more than happy to give you one. There are also places like
Freecycle where you might be able to hook up with one
(http://www.freecycle.org). Of course, I'm not sure how this
will get to you if you stop borrowing Gloria's monitor, but just
in case you stay online, the offer's there. I *might* be able to
ship one as well, once again, depending on your location.
Regards-
Chris, Tripper, Katie, and Hazard

I'd just like to chime in with a plug for Freecycle! It's a loose
connection of email lists where people advertise things they no longer
need, that they are willing to give away. Also, you are allowed to ask
for something you need, in the hope that someone has an unused one
hanging around. It's part of a movement to "keep junk out of landfills"
by re-using them rather than throwing them out. And that way, people
can get stuff they need for free!
There are many lists, all of them for local areas (so you can easily
go to get something). I've been on two local ones for about 2 or 3
months. I joined initially because I thought, what a great way to get
rid of all the junk in my house. And I have gotten rid of a bunch of
things. But I've also gotten some stuff I actually need (or want): a
microwave oven, when mine died, a second DVD player for my exercise
room, a pair of computer speakers, since mine weren't working, some
levelor blinds, and cloth scraps for sewing projects - all of which I
will use.
I don't know if this movement exists outside the USA, but check the
website that Christopher posted, to see if there's one in your area.
You can also start one, if there isn't.

I second the recommendation! Freecycle is a great organization. I have
both obtained and given away things to people who really appreciate them
through this group. There are Freecycle branches in several countries.
I don't know which ones other than Canada and Australia, but it is easy
to find out from the website.
