Stray Kitty Purrs Please!

I have a stray cat quarantined here tonight. Long story, but the kitty
has some obvious health issues and is quite thin. She has an
appointment with TED tomorrow to evaluate just what is going on with
her. She is a longhaired tuxedo girl and is a very sweet, affectionate
cat.

Unfortunately, I don't feel real good about this. She looks like a
poster cat for Feleuk/FIP. But I hope I'm wrong and that she only needs
some nutrition and maybe antibiotics.

So Im asking for purrs/good thoughts that some TLC & vet care will fix
her up.

Thanks

We shall purr that the health problems are curable.  Do people in your
vicinity ever advertise for lost cats?   MLB

Occasionally, but not often. There is a public bulletin board at the
post office, and a newspaper. This kitty started hanging around my
son's house and just would not leave.  I kind of suspect she belonged
to a family that moved and they left her. Anyway she was just so thin.
First I thought she just needed food, but she would just pick at the
food and not really eat. We thought her teeth might be bad, but it
turns out she has sores all in her mouth. So I just brought her home. I
have been very careful to not expose her to the other cats, I know that
calci virus causes mouth ulcers, but feleuk cats and FIP cats also get
them. Poor little thing. She really is such a sweet cat.

Could just be very advanced malnutrition. Have you tried giving soft food?

Purrs coming for everything to work out for the best.

Your purrs worked! We just got back. This kitty's whole problem was a
sticker (grass  burr) lodged in her throat. It had been there so long
that an infection had set in, thus the sores in her mouth. Removal of
the sticker, and some antibiotic with medicine that reduces swelling,
and she's good to go!!
But "go where" I'm not sure yet.
Thanks again!

Ow!! POOR baby!! But I'm so glad it is not serious (though eating is
probably still hard.) Good luck! Take pictures. Those before and after
pictures are alway amazing.

OK, Karen, I got a couple. She is a very photogenic cat, because the
pictures look way better than *she* does. You can't tell how thin she
is unless you look at her backbone. But I think she has *lots* of
potential, esp. with such a nice personality.

She's really cute! The white patch on her face is very symmetric. And
oooo, the bushy *tail*!! You're right, though - it's very hard to tell
how thin she is. She looks quite large in those photos, actually.

I'm not sure what a "sticker" is, but it sounds nasty. Especially if it
means "something that sticks into you" as opposed to "something sticky".
She's very lucky that you rescued her and got her vet care - I imagine
that without treatment, she would have died of either the infection or
starvation. Sounds like it was painful, too - poor thing!

Purrs for a great new home for the kitty girl,

I was trying to come up with another word for "sticker" because I
didn't think every region of the country has them. It's a grassy weed,
and the seed is about a 1/4 inch ball with barbs sticking out all over.
They are awful to step on barefoot.I can't imagine having one in my
throat.

Oh yeah, I've seen those. Ugh, poor girl kitty! :(  I just hope that
after a while, her throat tissue around where the seed was stuck
toughened up a bit so it wasn't horribly painful the entire time. I've
thought it was bad when I got a piece of a corn chip lodged in my throat!

We used to worry about our pets getting foxtails in their ears.   If you
were to get them in a trouser leg, they would work their way up.  Nasty
weeds.  MLB

She does look very thin.  She'll soon get a bigger butt to balance out
the magnificent whiskers and tail.

What a relief it must have been to get that burr out!  She must have
been licking them off when they got stuck in her fur.  How dangerous!

My son has been calling her 2Socks. IMO that's kind of a dumb name, but
I'm afraid it is going to stick. I am smack out of good names, LOL.
Stickers are just the most awful thing when you get them in your yard.
When they "seed", those burr things turn brown & fall off. Right now
they are beginning to go to seed, so all you have to do is brush by
one, and they stick to you. Dogs and cats get them in their fur, then
they try to get them out, and that's how she probably got them in her
mouth. What really stinks is in the fall you carry them in the house on
the bottom of your shoes, can't see them in the carpet, then step on
them later barefoot. Owie. We have managed to control them here, but in
my son's yard they are terrible.

I would check the yard before they go to seed and make sure they were
all cut and disposed of so the cats could not get into them.

Besides being efficient, I think they're starting to have pity on me or
something. They charged me $23 not only to remove the sticker, but for
the injection and take-home antibiotics. It could be a mistake too, I
did not question it!

Owww.  I wonder how she managed to get that stuck in her throat.
Surely she wasn't so hungry she tried to eat one??

She probably tried to pull them out of her coat or paws, and that's how
they got stuck in her mouth. She had a couple in her petticoat.
She is such a patient little cat. She's still stuck in the bedroom away
from everyone till she gets tested. You can tell she really looks
forward to someone opening the door and visiting with her. I really
think she's probably okay, besides maybe worms/ear mites. I did play
"musical cats" last night, and locked my five in my bedroom and let her
roam around for a little bit. They were a little huffy about it but
they got over it.

Wow Sherry, you are wonderful! You saved that cat in so many ways.

What a horrible time she must have had, trying to eat while in such
pain. I can't even imagine having that thing in my throat plus an
infection on top of that. She must be so relieved -- I'm sure she feels
like she's gone to heaven!

Good work!

Can you imagine?!  It must have been terrible.

Many purrs for the poor girl. If she is healthy, what will you name her? ;o)
