Make Levees, Not War

I adopted Francesca as a six month old female from the local Humane
Society in May 2004. She had a a cold, and I figured she'd get better
sooner if isolated from other cats and sources of infection, and that
I'd get her spayed as soon as it was safe for her to be anesthetized.
It took three weeks for that cold to clear up, and Francesca ate like a
horse. I figured she just liked getting a better grade of food than
what she had been eating at the shelter.  When she stared leaking
watery blood about four weeks after I adopted her (late on a Sunday
night, of course),  I took her to the emergency vet, only being sure
blood dripping out the hind end of a cat couldn't be a sign of anything
good. I felt sure she must be bleeding internally in some awful way.

  "Oh" said the emergency vet while he palpated her, "she's
pregnant." I was relieved she wasn't dying, and stunned at the same
time. He went on to say the kittens would probably come in the night,
but they didn't. So I took her to my regular vet the next morning, and
he gave Cesca a caesarean. THere were three kittens in the litter
originally, but only Nina survived.  As my friend Kim said, the
decision to keep Nina took about the first three days of Nina's life.
=o)

But Nina is just a love sponge, and quite the cutest cat I've ever had,
although her late beloved predecessor, Izzy (RB) came close.
