Nancy was just leaving the house for work and saw Mr. Scruffy lieing by
the side of the road - looks like he had been hit by a car. She's rushing
him to the vet around the corner now.

We still don't know the prognosis. At the vet now. Here's what we have
learned:
Mr Scruffles is very old. He has been living with our landlord for 15
years. He was diagnosed a couple years ago with heartworms (which can be
prevented, but not treated once acquired). The reason he's been getting so
skinny is that when the landlord puts out food (outside), other
neighborhood cats push him away from his food. I know, he should be
feeding him indoors and protecting him from the other cats. That's why
he's been coming to our place - he can eat without being molested. He has
also been badly bothered by the hot weather lately. Unfortunately, he is
also given to sleeping under cars. We think that's what happened this
morning - he fell asleep under the van, Nancy didn't see him and backed
over him. The alternatives are that he got hit on the street and retreated
under the van, or that he went to sleep under the van and just didn't wake
up.
Anyhow, Nancy learned all this immediately after finding him. The landlord
happened to be walking past (how's that for timing?), and has taken Mr.
Scruffles to the vet. I'm hoping to get word soon, but it doesn't look
good for the old guy.

Prayers and purrs for him.
Another reason to keep him in, at least during feeding time. Sounds
to me like his owner does not really look after or worry about him.
Too bad he could not be taken in by someone who would care for and
love him !!!

I just got home from work and I didn't do UseNet at work today, so a
belated set of purrs from our household.
May he awaken back in your loving household or at the Rainbow Bridge or
on an adventure that none of us can imagine. If he has no one on the
other side, he can always stay with my Mom. She is taking care of

Just heard from the landlord. Mr. Scruffles' injuries were too severe -
he left for the Bridge before he even arrived at the vet's. The vet
theorizes that he might actually have begun his journey before Nancy
even came out of the house this morning. His heartworm problem had
become worse, and he was most definitely feeling it.
This morning when I came out to feed the kitties, Mr. Scruffles was far
more interested in getting lovings than in eating. After I had been
petting him for a few minutes he started to work on his breakfast, but
very slowly. He really just wanted to be petted and told how cute he was.
On normal days, when I feed the outdoor kitties Ranger sits in the
living room window and watches. This morning, 5 of the 6 inside kitties
were sitting in the living room window, staring. They were watching
very, very intently, with wide open eyes. I have NEVER seen them do that
before. I suspect that Scruffles had decided that today was his time,
and that my kitties could tell.
I just got through speaking with the landlord. He didn't know how to
take care of a cat, but he was pretty attached to him anyway. I take
comfort in knowing that Scruffles got three consecutive tummy-filling
meals and plenty of petting and loving in his last day or so.
Mr. Scruffles, may your journey to the Rainbow Bridge be a peaceful one.
We'll miss you.
