Scouty just came and climbed onto my lap ALL BY HERSELF! She's never
done that before in all her born days - she hates being picked up and
handled and she's afraid of getting too close... the last few days
she's been pretty attention-hungry and pacing back and forth in front
of the monitor to get me to pay attention to her, and a couple of
times she's reached out with one paw and then backed away, but I never
expected that! I'm amazed... She didn't stay for long, but she was
purring her head off and kneading on my leg and I feel very honoured.
:)

She's still pacing back and forth in front of me and she almost did it
again - she reached out with one paw to me, and then she stood her
front half on my ample tummy but she didn't want to make the leap of
faith again.

Have you tried giving her headbutts ? Some scared but attention-hungry cats
react very well to that.

It is such an amazing honor when one of there wary guys decided to trust us.
Even if it only a little bit and for a little while.

Come on Scouty.  This is a nice thing.

Woohoo!! That's wonderful! I think she'll start doing this more often,
now that she's tried it and nothing bad happened. :)

Sounds like you have the makings of a lap fungus there! Congrats on the
leap of faith.

Cesca is sometimes spontaneously affectionate, that way.  SHE has to
initiate the contact, and she dislikes being held altough chin rubs,
ear skritches and stroking are okay with her. She will tolerate being
held  being too much of a lady to scratch or struggle, too much. But
she often puts a paw on my chin and pushes away with what I call "the
fifty pound lean" indicating that she REALLY wants to get down.  If I
try to get TOO affectionate, she gives me this look as if to say "We're
not THAT well acquainted, you know."  But if she chooses to honor me,
she can stay for  quite a while, permitting all sorts of caresses she
would normally object to. When she gets truly relaxed and happy, she
drools the waters of Babylon. =o)

Good for Scouty! I hope it is the first of many affectionate overtures
from her.

Aw, there's something very special about the first time a skittish cat
trusts you enough to climb into your lap and DEMAND attention.

Spotty first time sounds alot like Scout's. She had gotten to the
point where she would sit by the computer chair and politely ask, in
her soft squeaky voice, to be picked up. She still asks, but now she's
asking me to make room, because she doesn't wait to be picked up.

And the memory of Rocky's (RB) first time is something I'll always
treasure. I was outside. kicked back in a lawn chair. For quite a
while he'd been coming up when I was kicked back like that, reach up
and tap my leg. I'd bend down and give him a scritch and he'd lay down
and take a nap under the chair. On that special day, he skipped the
leg tap and head scritch, just hopped up onto my lap and laid down for
his nap. He acted like it was just the most normal thing, but I was
amazed - especially since he was one of those cats that did NOT like
to be picked up, and would hop down as soon as you put him in your
lap.  That was a real breakthrough for him, as he quickly decided he
LIKED laptime.
