Talking to your kitty

All of us have babytalked to our cats, but do any of you talk to your
cats even when they're not around?

When I had Betty, I would talk to her, and sing to her, and dance with
her, but I would continue even when I wasn't talking to her directly.
When I was washing dishes, taking a shower, taking a walk, or doing
anything else where I was too occupied to play and cuddle with Betty,
but idle enough to talk out loud or sing a ditty.  Especially if
nobody is within earshot.

The things that I say are things that I would normally have said to
Betty if we happened to be cuddling.  The most common are phrases
like, "I love you", and "We'll always be together".  Followed by
exclamations like, "So soft!" and grammatically mangled exclamations
like, "Such whisker!  Such cutifulness!"

Sometimes, these segue into songs.  Some just fragments, like a single
refrain.  Pretty embarrassing songs.  These include:

Together Forever
Being in Love
So Pretty
Love Cat
Adorawonderbeauticute

I hope that others will say that they do this, or else I'll feel like
I'm a crazy person, always talking to myself. ;)

Ha!  I'm NOT the only nut who has KittySongs (tm)!

Also, when we describe what we think our cats are saying or thinking,
they each have a distinct "voice."  Nocturne's voice is very elegant
and snooty, in a dictator sort of way.  Smokey sounds like a
hoser/"hick."  The bitties have similar voices except that Kumani's is
softer, and Tyche's is louder, faster, and interspersed with random
shrieking.

Some of the kittysongs are wordplay:

A Smokey boy
A pokey boy
A pokey Smokey boy , etc
it's so tawny
it's Kumani
scrawny tawny...Kumani etc

others are rhymes, often ripping off other songs:

I'm a cat
what do you think you're gonna do 'bout that
we spend our mornings poly in the bye
and if you move us we will scream and cry
you won't know why
I'm a cat
I spend my afternoons just getting fat
I will eat most anything I please
if I don't like it then I just might sneeze
or have to wheeze... etc.

and, sadly, there are kitten-songs full of swearing and shocking
profanities.  Usually interspersed with:

"Holy f*** we're cute!  And f***ing DARLING!  Say we're cute little
kittens or we'll BITE YOU, b!tch!"

(We did not raise Kumani and Tyche very well at all.)

But they make us giggle because they're just so over the top, like
South Park.

LOL.  So Smokey sounds like he's from Newfoundland or something?  I
like the idea of Tyche's random shrieking.

I have to admit that I also find South Park dialogue hilarious.  I
haven't had an opportunity to watch it in a few years, but I'm pretty
sure I've seen every single episode up to season 5.

What I've seen, I liked.  I like how it sometimes gets almost surreal
with the "Peter, remember when..." and other sequences.

Actually, I don't usually like Family Guy unless you can get me drunk
enough.  Then I'll watch it and laugh.  I don't drink much, so the
opportunity is rare.

Smokey doesn't sound like a Newfie--Smokey sounds like the rougher part
of Belleville, Ontario.  That's where he was living wild.  He likes to
remind us that he has "forest cred."  It's like street cred, except
there weren't any streets where he was. :)

Come to think of it, a Newfie cat would be hilarious:

"Wake up, my son, I'se not been fed since I was a fart in a mitt!"

Does this show have live actors, or is it animated? I'm not sure I've
ever seen it.

To Sammy... (to the tune of James Blunt's "You're Beautiful")

You're beautiful,
You're beautiful,
You're beautiful, it's true.
And I saw your face,
In a crowded place, [PetsMart]
And I knew just what to do,
To always be with you. [Adopted her]

A beautiful song, and not just the lyrics get mangled when I sing it (I
can't carry a tune in a bucket and Sammy will usually come bite me to make
me stop).

Whenever I mangle lyrics, it's usually in the style of John Valby ;) but
here's a clean one for our cat. McDonalds had an old commercial jingle
"McDonald's is My Kind of Place", so that's the rhythm for this:

Cat Five is the tabby cat.
She knows just where it's at.
My heart goes pitter-pat,
When she purrs on my lap.
Oh, Cat Five is the tabby cat.
She's begging for a snack.
Cat Five is the tab-by cat. Meow, meow!

All the time.

I talk to them when they aren't around, and I also find myself singing
nonsense songs to them, sometimes when they aren't around. The
screen-savers on my computers at work is Harri Roadcat; as I'm getting
ready to leave I touch her picture and tell her "see you soon, pretty
girl".

And I can't leave the house in the morning without telling them "be happy,
healthy, safe, and comfy". Even if nobody is in the room with me :)

Oh yeah, I have to say good bye to Rita every morning when I go to
work.  And I assure her that I have to go to work ' to keep my baby in
kibble'.  That's the only reason I work, according to her.  Sometimes
she's off hiding somewhere, sometimes she's sitting in the window, but
lately she's been very clingy on the couch in the mornings when I
leave.  I feel bad then.

Following the tradition of my mother, who would not let me leave the house
without drawing a cross on my forehead three times while saying a Polish
blessing, I don't leave without making a house blessing to protect the cats
especially, and the property in general, from any and all harm. I don't try to
cross them; it would turn into a game of tag with Odessa, and anyway i'm not
Christian; and Stosh would ask "Are you stoned or stupid?"

Kitty ditties have been a long-standing tradition for me, since the time
my Fritzie was very young. I read to him a lot, and also made up kitty
songs out of the blue that I'd even sing in the shower:

I love-a my Fritzie cat,
He is my spoiled brat,
I always tell him that
I love my kitty cat! (I think the tune is called "Santa Lucia.")

We do it now with our babies. Roxie in particualr likes the little song we
pulled out of the Japanese Iron Chef/Backdraft music:

Roxie, Roxie! Roxie, she's our girl (meow meow meow!)
Pretty--Roxie--she is--our girl--
We love our girl!

She also has a great liking for the Alan Parsons Project, and sings along
with Louie when he practices for karaoke.

Stoshu is our Little Guy,
He is--the Boss!
He big and tough but made of mush
And he just loves his Mama,
Our Stoshu Guy,
We love our little fella! (Dixie, I think; or maybe a version of Yankee
Doodle?)

Dolly, my Odessa Dolly,
Gentle little Dolly,
With us you're here so never fear
You'll never be alone... (after the Emerson Lake & Palmer vocal version of
The Great Gate of Kiev.)

I want Candy! Brandy Candy!
Am armful of Brandy, nothing's better!
I just want to pick her up and pet her! (I want Candy, I think by Bow Wow
Wow.)

We're still working on Sabrina's; I think it'll be based on the Beatles!

Blessed be,

For my Roxy cat, I sing:

You know, you're a cute little heartbreaker
Roxy!
And you know, you're a sweet little lovemaker
Roxy!
I wanna take you home
I won't do you no harm, no
You've got to be all mine, all mine
Oooh, Roxy lady!

Usually gets an ear twitch or two.

Not crazy.  But maybe you do need to think about getting a kitten.

My level of inexperience with kittens would surprise you.

I've actually seen kittens *once*.  I've *never* held or touched a
kitten.  Betty was my only experience taking care of any kind of cat.

So I don't know why anyone would think I'd know what to do with a
kitten, of all things. :)

If a kitten is fully weaned, it's not really much different from an
adult cat, just more destructive :) Oh, and you have to make sure it
hasn't squirmed its little body into someplace where it might get
hurt, such as inside the machinery of a recliner chair. Adult cats
can do this, too, but they're usually more able to extricate themselves
when necessary, and if they do get hurt, it's more likely to be a foot
or a tail, not their whole body. Kittens often need more attention than
adults, but probably no more than what Betty seemed to want, so you've
already been broken in as far as that goes.

Whenever I've adopted a kitten, they've pretty much been good to go.
They'll eat and use the litterbox just like an adult. The original
turnkey product. :)

There's nothing to it, Tak.  Kittens come litterbox trained and eat
their own food.  They are just more playful than older cats and tend to
cause more havoc around the house.  But they are great entertainment and
it's so nice to see them grow up and then when they're all old and
stuff, you can look back on all the cute kitten pics and remember their
childhood :-)

Nothing like a hoolikitten! And if you're lucky you'll get one who's

hoolikittens. You'd make a great kitten-daddy, Tak!

Well, I have no doubt that if I happened to encouter a kitten, I would
immediately love it, and I love hearing stories about and seeing
pictures of kittens.  But I'm really not historically a
kitten-experienced person.

Also, I had the vague feeling that with Betty's passing, someone up
there might have been sending me the message, "You thought you could
have a cat?  Well, you thought wrong."
Singh - 03 Aug 2006 05:56 GMT
I would not take it in that way. Not from reading over all this time of
your love for Betty and the quality of care you gave her.

The important thing is that you loved her. You wanted to do right by her,
and you did. I know it may not seem like it right now, but you did what was
right by Betty and didn't let her suffer. Think about it...how many of us
have the cojones to let go of someone we love almightily, although we know
it will crush us to do it? Do you have any concept of what a courageous man
you are? If you were getting a message from someone, I don't think it was
from "up there," if you know what I mean. There are all kinds of little
demons that can whisper nasty stuff at you and try to shoot down your
dreams and happiness. If I were a cat, I'd be honored to have you be my
two-leg. You've proven you love, and hold the welfare of the one you love
above your own. You're worthy. You're above worthy.

LOL! Reminded me of when we first got the Furballs, it had been 16
years since we had had kittens and we'd plain forgotten just what
handfuls two tiny balls of fur can be. I remember during one fraught

Oh, I never talk to myself, I always talk to the kitties. Even if they

Well, you may be a crazy person. ;)  But if you are, I am, too.  I

Of course!  And we've had threads before about the Kitty Hit Parade,
haven't we?  I made up the Upside-Downy Head song for Stinky (same
words, many different tunes). ;)  And the Ballad of Stinky Todd.  And
a song to the tune of the Grinch song when he's looking exceptionally
shiningly, blindingly white
"You're a clean one,
Mr. Stink,
You really are a sight!
Your white fur is so blinding,
You glow in the dark at night,
Mr. Stink!" ;)

Hey, that sounds a bit like my Mr. V song:

You're a long one, Mr.V
You really are a hoot!
You're as cuddly as a teddy
And so charming and so cute!

Talk to the cat(s) when there's no cat around? For sure I've done it.
Countless times.

This includes both speaking to my cat(s) when I am somewhere other than at
home, and therefore am well out of earshot of said cat(s), and also
forgetting myself and addressing aloud a cat who's already gone to the RB.
The latter has been more likely to take place during the timespan when
I've had no cat at home, the time between the loss of the RB cat and the
adoption of the cat's successors.

Someday, someone's going to hear me speaking to cats who aren't there.
Fortunately, anyone who knows me knows I'm cuckoo anyway, so hopefully it
won't make much difference. Maybe I'll tell them I'm trying out to become
the next Pet Psychic or something. ;o)

This is precisely what I've been experiencing too!  I'll have to
borrow your pet psychic excuse for when I'm eventually overheard.

lets see:

Sung to the tune "Jingle Bells"

Tanda Shoes, Tanda Shoes
Tanada's wearing Shoes
Tanda Shoes, Tanda Shoes
Tanada's front page news

Or

"She's my pretty little Sonyakin
She makes me feel all young again

Or to the Spiderman tune from the old cartoons:

Merlieman, Merlieman
He's a really burley man
Can he swipe at a cat
Being gentle's where he's at

and so forth.

Nope never talk to them, sing to them, or interact with them.  I never sing
music from the CD player with them either, like Blood Sweat & Tears "You
made me so very happy", or "Bless the child"

All the time. Usually "Where's she gone?" in the direction where I hope
Dunzi has hidden herself and "Stop that now!" aimed at whatever
mischief Sarsi is up to.

As for singing....I can't sing but it doesn't stop me trying!

I used to talk and sing to my dogs while they were alive and I carried on
doing it for a while after they had passed away.  It was a ritual that I
didn't want to let go.  They all had their own little songs just for them
(silly ones) mentioning their name frequently.  I would gather one up into
my arms and sing the song.  They loved it.
Neither KFC nor Boyfriend like to be handled without consent, it freaks them
out.  If they feel the need for contact they will ask, or get on my knee but
I cannot push myself on them and lift them up for a cuddle.

Until tonight I actually hadn't realised that I sang to them!  I do.
When I got home from work today Kitty was at the bottom of the stairs
waiting.
So I sang  "Hey, here's Kitty Farmcat, Kitty, Kitty Farmcat, she so lovely
tiny and tuxie waiting for her meowmie."
Boyfriend appeared moments later.  I sang to him too!  (I didn't realise I
did it, honestly!)
His song was:  "Oh, here is the Boyfriend, the lovely lovely Boyfriend.
Here is Boyfie the handsome cat." and more.
<blush>
Am I crazy too?

Haven't you been reading these? ;)  This ng is a virtual loony bin. ;)
Dante just went charging up the stair for no apparent reason, so he
got "Dan- Dan- Dante,  goodbye . . ."  ;)
