I'm off on Army Cadet Camp as an adult instructor for 2 weeks tomorrow.
I won't be able to check in, but purrs to those who need them.

The guys are being well looked after by my gran and a petsitter. I've
just been out for all their supplies so they won't be going hungry! ;o)

See you on the flip side.

You're a drill instructor? :)  See you in two weeks!

So you have a sadistic side then (grin)? What do you instruct them in? Hope
it cools off a bit, the uniform may be a bit too much in this heat.
Catch up with you later,

Just want to let you know that for many of us who read this via a
newsreader, we don't always get the posts in order the way you do,
reading it on a website. So it helps to keep a little bit of context
in a post so your readers will know what you're responding to. I have
no idea what post you are responding to here, or who it was from -
I guess I haven't gotten it yet.

I'm just saying, quote a bit of the text from the post you're
responding to - just like I did with yours, above. It'll help many
of us understand your posts!

Just a friendly suggestion.

Agreed a quote would be useful, but why do you think Sandra is posting via a
website? If you look at her headers it's clear she's using Outlook Express
to post via bt.com who in turn use giganews servers.

OK, maybe I'm wrong about the website. I thought maybe she was posting
in a forum type of environment, where everyone can see what everyone else
is posting to because it's right there on the same page, so no need to
quote context.

Anyway, I guess it doesn't matter - the point is, try to give folks a
bit of a hint what you're responding to.

That's usually true, at least for long threads.  However, my
browser allows me to arrange newsgroup posts by "Subject".
So far there have only been six posts to this title, and
Helen Miles's is the only one not prefaced by "re:"
(indicating it to be the original), so in this case it
really wasn't difficult to puzzle out!

I can sort posts by subject, also (and in fact, I do). But what I'm
saying is, Usenet posts don't always *arrive* at my ISP in the order
in which they were posted. At least if part of the original post
was quoted, I'd have a clue what it was about.

Also, even if I did get the original post, if I read it yesterday,
or several days ago, I wouldn't necessarily remember the subject
line any more. And my newsreader shows only the *unread* posts by
default. So the original one isn't visible anymore, unless I change
the settings so that it shows the already-read ones, too.

Oh, that you can change!  (And also set how far back you
want it to "remember" previous posts.)  It depends upon
which browser you use, but SFAIK, they all give you the
ability to set the options you want.

So the original one isn't visible anymore, unless I change

Why wouldn't you want to do that?  IMO it's the only way to
keep track of posts properly.

I don't show already-read messages, and it works just fine.  If I want
to see the parent, I can hit "esc-P", and if my server has the parent
post, it appears.

Anyway, Jill's original point is still the key one: there's no
guarantee that news messages will arrive in order.  It's quite
possible that a server could receive a response to a message well
before it receives the original message.  Selective quoting is usually
a good idea.

That being said, we can't force anyone to abide by netiquette
guidelines, so it's always a good idea to configure a newsreader in
the most usable way possible (which may vary from person to person).
For example, I managed to set up my newsreader so that responses to my
messages are at the top and appear in red, so that I typically see
them (unless the thread gets really, really deep and my message ID
gets lost in the headers).

Actually, that was me, not Jill. Not scolding you or anything - I just
want to be more visible.

Doh!  I'm so sorry.  I hate misattribution.  That's what I get for not
taking the time to check.

Have fun Helen.  Remember to eat more CHICKEN.

For those who weren't there, Helen and I were discussing her trip and she
told me about a survival course she and a friend of hers had to take.  It
involved killing a chicken, plucking and cleaning it out, and eating it.
Helen did very well, but her friend only stunned her chicken.  It came to
while the girl was trying to pluck it.  The SAS instructor ended up having
to chase this chicken around the area so that it could be caught and put out
of its misery.
