Kumani has an odd habit of resting her paw atop our heads. She likes
to sleep on our pillows and when she does so, stretches out a forepaw
and places it on our cheek or forehead. If we move, she very
deliberately replaces the paw. If we are sitting, she will put her
paw on our leg or on our hands. Tyche has recently started doing this
too.
my partner calls this "the benediction." I was wondering if anyone
else's cat does this?
Kumani and Tyche were raised by my partner who consider him to be
their biological mother and have imprinted on him. It is my theory
that since he expressed affection towards them by petting, instead of
by bunting or licking, that they are attempting to imitate petting to
show affection to us, hence the "laying on of hand/paw."
Kumani and Tyche do not bunt/headbutt. They also did not knead until
they were about a year old, eventually learning the behaviour by
observing Nocturne. However, by the age of four weeks they'd learned
to hit the keyboard with their paws by imitating their MomDad.

Jake likes contact too, at night. I'll wake up sometimes "holding hands"
with him. My hand inside his paws or his paws inside my hand. Daytime and
he isn't even a lap cat.

Amigo (RB) was well know for wanting to rest with a paw attached to his
favorite human.

No, but I wish they did! It's a sign of affection when a cat "reaches out
and touches you" in that way. So, although it might be a bit inconvenient,
it is indeed an honor.
Actually, Licorice does this occasionally, but he has to be in a *really*
cuddly mood!

Oliver will do something like this. He will often pat our cheeks or lay
his paw on our head or face. He also likes to put all of his paws into
my hand to "hold paws." Another favorite thing is to grab hold of our
arms and wrap his front paws around our wrist, arrange our arm to his
liking and use us as a pillow.
He is such a love bug! :-)

Stinky too. He loves a paw massage. I take his paw between my
fingers and thumb, and knead gently. He turns to mooosh. ;)

Lately, Nikki has started doing this. She often sleeps on the arm of my
chair, and stretches out a paw onto my leg and rests it there.

I's sure that's quite possible.

My ex-boyfriend Jeff, when I first knew him almost 25 years ago, had a cat
named Tigger, who liked to pet back when the twolegs were showing him his
due adoration. Tigger would reach out and pat or stroke the object of his
affection on the chest or arm.
Blessed be,
Baha

Bobby Pants, our manx is a touchy boy. He was abandoned, full grown
by his a.sholes.......I mean owners. I'm guessing he's still a bit
messed up in the head from it, and we've had him for about 3 years
now. He sleeps on our bed every night, and must be touching me
somewhere with one of his front paws. He also freaks out if any of
the doors inside the house happen to be shut, with us on the other
side of it. Poor Bobby. I think he's getting over it, but it's a
slow process.
Louie sleeps on my pillow every night, and quite often rests a paw or
his tail on my face. If I move around too much, or talk, he starts
thumping his tail acting like he's going to take a swat at me. Time
for Louie to vacate. About 10 minutes later, he comes back and
apologizes by getting right in my face, doing this sort of
chirrrrrrrping/purring combination thing that is the sweetest sound.
I almost always wake up with a stiff neck, and no pillow, because
Louie has it all.

Both Otis and Chester do this. I have a theory that its dual purpose. One
is that it is a sign of affection and that they just like to touch us. The
other is that it is prudent for them to do so when we big people are sitting
or sleeping. If they are touching us, then we know that they're there and
we're less likely to suddenly move and squish them. It's kind of an "I like
you and I want you to know that I'm here" thing in my mind.
I love it!

Both LB and Sammy do that here. Both do it when they sleep on my
chest, reaching up and patting me on the face. Also, on the rare
occasion when they crawl under the bed covers. It especially obvious
(and cute) when Sammy crawls under the covers. She usually sleeps at
the foot of the bed, and doesn't sleep right next to me. But, since
she wants that skin contact, she reaches on "hand" WAY out to make
contact.

Sheba doesn't quite do this. But she does like to wash my hand and
then lay on it all night. I suspect it is one way of keeping me all to
herself so i can't pet the other cats. ;-)

Stinky reaches out a paw, and rests it on me when he's feeling lovey
but lazy. It's part of the whole "saucer-eyed power-purring" mode. ;)
