Buster has apparently decided to go on walkabout.
A couple of days ago, he insisted on going outside. As soon as I
opened the door, he rushed off, to points west. We haven't seen him
since then.
I've put up posters, and have been calling him, and checking the
surrounding field and wooded areas, in hopes he'll come home soon.
Still no sign of him.
When he came to us a few years ago, he was a feral (but very friendly)
tomcat, and would disappear for a week at a time before stopping by to
let us know he was still around, so I am not extremely worried for
him. Still, he has been mostly indoors for the last year or so, and is
now neutered, so I am worried. Not to mention, the temperatures are in
the upper 90's to low 100's.
I could use some "get your furry little butt home" purrs, for Buster
to come back soon.

Many many purrs that he gets his fuzzy butt home soon. I know how you
feel as Miss Lily Whiskers has been gone the best part of 36 hours.

Purrs, of course, and a bit of optimisim. If he has been feral, he
would not forget how to find a cool spot and lie low. Having had a
loving home, he won't forget how to get there once he has chilled out.

Perhaps you could try walking the star shaped pattern in your neighborhood
in your bare feet. Also try hanging your sox and.or underwear outside on
your fence or shrubs so he can detect familiar odors. (I wish I could
locate the original posting of this idea.) Best wishes for Buster to
find his home. MLB

This sounds like some kind of incantation. Is it a magic ritual?
Or a meditation walk?

Eek! I wouldn't want my neighbors to see my undies hanging over my
fence!
Nonetheless, Get Home Buster!! Your humans are worried about you!

It was posted to Anecdotes about 3 years ago by a fellow who had been
hunting for his wandering cat. He said it worked. Nothing magical,
except animals have a good sense of smell and he figured it would lead
the cat home......and it did. I was impressed with his ingenuity. MLB

I was just referring to the 5-pointed star, which sounded vaguely Wiccan.
And the bare feet idea gave it a certain ritualistic feel.
Hey, if you have to go sit on your fence in your underwear, I guess it's
worth it if it brings Buster home, right? :)
I don't know, though - I tried all sorts of suggestions from many different
sources, to try to find Smudge, and in the end, she looked out a window and
saw me, and that's how we found each other!

I know cats have good noses, but would think that means they know what how
smells like without the underwear.
One suggestion when calling cats. Always call from home. Or at least walk
as far from home as you plan to go before you start calling, and then call
as you head back home. Seems to me most outdoor cats do pretty well in
their own territory, but can get lost if the wander or get chased or scared
further away than that. You start calling to them from two blocks away it
only makes it worse.
At least that is true with mine. They aren't about to come running up to me
wagging their tails saying "Mom you found me!" But calling, especially at
night when sound carries and they feel safer gives them some direction.

Eeek, is everyone disappearing? Purrs that he comes home. I remember
it was a while before you were able to keep him in most of the time,
so I'm sure you're right about him knowing how to cope outside.

Lots of get your butt home purrs. The one good thing is that as a former
feral he know the area very well. It's probably just a b*st*rd cat trick.
