The pleasure of your company is requested in welcoming the newest member
of our family, Miss Odessa Tatyana Kaur, who just came home with me
about half an hour ago. The pleasure of her company is requested too,
but she is a shy little thing, and is hiding behind the other desk in
our computer room for the moment. We've been warned that she is
cautious, so it's cool.
Her Auntie Sandy helped me get her home, and helped keep the other very
curious kids at bay while I got her set up in this room, where she'll be
sequestered for the next three or four days. She'll need it, being
stressed out right now. Stosh and Roxie are camped out by the door,
waiting to see the newcomer; Brandy, still a kitten, is too busy
playing. She really is a lovely little miss, our Odessa. She's now
getting a bit curious herself as I type, and has finally come out to
sniff around. She is truly velvet soft; it is a pleasure to touch her
fur, a pleasure almost naughty, like I'm indulging in way too much of
the finest chocolate. I cannot believe that this beauty was rejected by
so many, because she's all black. Oh well. Their idiocy was their loss,
and our gain. What a delight: living art!
I so love having kitties around. When my Fritzie was living we wanted
more, but we were afraid of upsetting the delicate balance that comes
when a diabetic feline is finally regulated. Stress can set them off
into crazy-sugarland. Now I can't get enough! I love the wrestling
matches and the ham-stealing, the liveliness of multiple cats. and I'm
sure Fritzie speaks to them from the summer-land: "Hey, Brandy, if you
want to get Daddy *really* good, just get on his pillow at 4 in the
morning and purr really, really loud. That'll knock his Jockeys off!"
Louie didn't believe in channeling before now...
So our family is growing with our new, beautiful Russian princess. She's
a gem and a prize, and I'm proud to have her with us. Please join me and
Louie in a hearty welcome to our newest furbaby!
Blessed be,
Baha

Congrats on your new addition! I thought she must be a Russian Blue with
a name like that, but then read on to see that she is a black kitty. I
guess you've just given her a whimsical (but very pretty) name.

Congratulations Odessa on finding slaves! You'll find these hoomins
particularly well trained at cat slavitude, a kitty couldn't ask for better!
They are also linked in with a whole bunch of other cat slaves, who will
also adore your visage and marvel at your activities. You will be a much
loved kitty.

Welcome Miss Odessa Tatyana Kaur!
You are so lucky to have got her, Baha. She sounds wonderful. If she had
been in a shelter over here in Europe she would have been snapped up long
ago. A lucky charm cat!
I want to see pictures of her! Soon!

Many thanks! Europe must not have the superstitions common to North America.
I've now talked to several people who worked at different shelters and all
have told me that they won't allow a black cat to be adopted out at Halloween
time because of stories about ritual abuse of black cats by people who call
themselves Satanists. We've adopted one of our cats from the Ten Lives
shelter already, so the foster-home called our vet and the Ten Lives Club
president for character references. I think that's the only reason we got
Odessa. I am sure our little princess is a lucky charm cat, and once we get
her "broken in" and integrated, things will go well.
Just out of curiosity, where in Europe are you from?
Blessed be,
Baha

Here's my favorite quote on that subject:
"A black cat crossing your path signifies that the animal is going
somewhere." - Groucho Marx

Beautiful!!! You've brought to mind another; and any Mark Twain
afficionados, please correct me if I'm wrong: "If a man were to be crossed
with a cat, it would improve man, but deteriorate the cat."

Just to satisfy your curiosity, I live in the south of Sweden.
We don't have Halloween here, although storekeepers try to introduce it.

Here in Finland, too. It's silly, because it's a Catholic holiday and
Scandinavia hasn't had many Catholics since the Reformation.
Besides, we have our own similar thing at Easter, when kids dress up as
witches and go around with a coffee pot and ask for coins or sweets. We
don't need another feast for kids to go around begging. ;o)

Halloween itself--October 31--is not a Catholic holiday in the strictest sense
of the word. The word itself derives from "All Hallows Eve," the day before
the Feast of All Saints, November 1. That is the true Catholic holiday, and
the North American custom of begging for treats and suchlike comes from a
tradition of dressing as ghouls to frighten evil spirits away from villages so
they may receive the full blessings of the saints. Now it's just another
marketing trick and it seems to be spreading like fungus from what Lisa has
said.
I have never heard of the Finnish custom you've described. Can you give any
history on it?
Blessed be,
Baha

The Swedes seem to have the same custom. Here is a short article on it:
http://hem.bredband.net/berteg/sweaster.htm
Here's a long one on Easter celebrations in Finland. Scroll down to
witches if you don't want to read it all. And hey, it's on topic: cats
are mentioned!
