At last we have had a thunderstorm this afternoon - and a spectacular one
too.  It lasted for around 2 hours and the rain absolutely lashed down.
After it was over I got in the car and tried to go to the shop for some
bread, it wasn't possible as the bridge was flooded rather too deeply than I
wanted to risk getting my little Citroen through it.
So to amuse myself I parked up for 15 minutes and watched to see who might
be brave enough to risk it.
Everyone in a large high 4 wheel drive jeepie sorta thing went for it and
got through, male or female driver.
All females in small cars turned back as did quite a lot of males.  Some
males went for it and got through successfully but their engines died once
they were safely through because of water blocking the exhaust pipe.  A few
got away unscathed.
Most female drivers in medium sized cars turned back but almost all male
drivers tried to get through.  The female drivers that decided to risk it
went to the far side of the road and put one side of their car up on the 2
foot sidewalk.  The males just drove through regardless.

It was a very interesting social experiment for me to watch this.  I shall
talk about this gender difference at work next week.

I guess I'm not too surprised by the results ... me, I doubt I'd have
gone through (but it's hard to say without actually seeing the
situation).  And the higher center of gravity of SUVs doesn't
necessarily inspire my confidence.

When I was learning to drive, my father was quite emphatic about not
driving through floodwater, particularly moving floodwater covering a
road on a raised embankment.  The water tends to be muddy enough that
you can't tell if the roadway is starting to wash away, and if your
car floats off the embankment into deeper water, you may well drown.
About 20 years ago, some friends of mine drowned when their vehicle
was washed off of a flooded bridge into deep water.

When I was young female drivers tended to lack confidence, so males
tended to be better.

Nowadays most drivers are full of confidence, but males try to be more
macho, so females tend to be better.
