Gertie ferret is coming home tomorrow!

Helen Miles - 21 Jul 2006 20:34 GMT Well, it seems little Miss stray ferret is a girl of about 3 months old. I went to the vets this evening to drop off some forms, and check on the status of the stray ferret.
She was checked by the vet, she is in perfect health apart from being in season, and she is apparently terribly affectionate and very excitable. Everyone at the vets is delighted that she's coming to a home rather than being PTS.
I'm speaking to the head nurse tomorrow who is a ferret specialist, to just get an idea of what to expect, then I have to go shopping for a cage, ferret supplies and some chicken, and then I pick her up... *GULP*!
I've talked my next door neighbour Ann into looking after her whilst I am away for 2 weeks and I'm actually pretty excited now I have some idea what to expect.
I also expect to be asking lots of ferrety questions.... Tweed, Nanny....

Maybe this site will help! John and I love to look at the ferrets in pet shops when we travel... they sleep a lot, like cats, but they also play like kittens! We watched some tumble about on our last trip and they had us in stitches! You're going to have your hands full.

LOL It was a ferret... and along came a 7 or 8 year old boy asking, "Have you seen my pet ferret?" It just wanted Mom to pet it and maybe play with it a little; toss it a ball?
We teased mom no end after that. Oooh, a big bad ferret came up on the patio! LOL

Reminds me of the antics of my old neighbor Rocky Ferret.
There was this one vignette that always stuck out in my mind-- Rocky's slave had the front door open for moving some large furniture in and out, and suddenly, Rocky came chugging out the front door (going "whatwhatwhatwhat") and down the front steps, just like he was late for an appointment or something. I was always fascinated with the way he moved-- he would flow down the steps like water. The voice of Rocky's slave was heard from inside: "WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU'RE GOING YOU MANIAC?" and Rocky just without stopping, all in one motion, u-turned and flowed, then chugged, right back into the house, going "whatwhatwhat" all the time.

John and I like to go to PetCo to look at the little critters and the ferrets fascinate him. They are terribly cute and slinky; I understand they get along well with cats. Well, in Helen's case, we hope so, anyway :)

[quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > > Jill Years ago, a friend who had two cats moved in with another friend who had a ferret. The household did not stay together long but only because the male human component was a d*g, a common problem. The fur people got along famously. So much so that Denise went out and got a ferret because her cats apparently missed having one around. They got along well, also, although the new ferret was very surprised at meeting cats. In both of these situations, the ferrets seemed rather submissive to one of the cats. But that may have been simply because PB was some mucho tomcat, him.

Rocky was a hoot and very sweet. He *was* making a break for freedom, ;) but he loved his Daddy so much that he could be distracted from most naughtiness by the sound of Daddy's voice. Rocky always had to drop whatever he was doing to see what Daddy was up to. I remember seeing him do his little ferret dance on the porch when his Daddy came home in the evening.

I don't have any ferrets now but I had them for around ten years (maybe more, I've forgotten exactly how long) Ages, anyway.

It is not necessary to buy artificial plastic things for ferrets. If you want to make a place to hide just knock a few scrap pieces of wood together. They really like tunnels. They will run through a drainpipe each time you put them at the entrance. They love it.

Nanny - 21 Jul 2006 21:30 GMT Glad to be of service :-) If she's 3 months old she can't be in season yet, she'll be in season for the first time around next March. If she's in season she's a lot older than 3 months (though still young). I'm sure you'll love her ;-)

> How unusual to find a stray ferret! She sounds awfully cute - > integrating her into the family should be an interesting source of new > stories.///// Sadly, according to the vet it is apparently very common. He seems to think 50% are genuine strays, and 50% are "strays" that the owners are dumping. They ahve on average 1-2 stray ferrets a month. So, I doubt I'll have to wait too long for a friend for Gertie....

Nanny - 22 Jul 2006 08:49 GMT When you get more and more into the ferret world you'll see how many stray ferrets and ferret shelters there are. It's indeed very common.
