Hi all,

It's been a long time since I read this ng. I've notice many new people
and many people who are still around from when I was a regular
contributor to RPCA.

For those who don't remember me and/or don't know me, I am the proud
human of 9 cats. Which I now realise is an insane number. However they
are here to stay and I love them to bits. I'm from Australia and use to
be a RPCA addict.

So things have changed a bit for me. I moved to Brisbane (from
Armidale) in January with my hubby (Neil) and my crazy cats (and rats).

Since I last posted, two of my original cats have died; Monty from
feline AIDS and Tink died recently and very suddenly at the vets when
she was under anesthetic (she went in for an x-ray!). Mango went
missing in 2003 (I may have posted about this). This was a stressful
and sad time (as you can imagine) and still makes me feel teary and
guilty.

Since Mango, the cats have been confined to large enclosures, and have
access to part of the house. The cat enclosure is a work in progress,
with extensions, walkways and furniture planned for when my DH gets
leave and when the budget allows. We've worked out how to make
relatively cost effective cat enclosures using orchard netting.

Anyway I look forward to reading more posts.

Cheers,
Dewi.

Please post some pictures of your cat enclosures.  We get many questions on
this newsgroup where they could be helpful to others..

Thanks,

Hi Mary,

I don't have any photo's of my cat enclosures, however we got the idea
from an Australian company called CatMax (http://www.catmax.com.au/).
Our enclosure is very similar to the CatMax enclosures, with fewer
accessories. As mentioned it's still a work in progress. The catmax
netting is more like cricket netting. We used orchard netting as it was
easy to get hold off and cheaper. It may not be dog proof though. We
attached the netting (using fencing ring clips) to clothes line wire
that has been tightly streatched along the boundary of the enclosure.

When I was in Armidale, the enclosure was a side yard (pretty big at ~
10m x 20m). The netting was streathced over the yard (about 2m above
the ground) and was attached to the fence that surrounded the yard. I
can't get any photo's of this unfortunately as it has been dismantled.

The current enclosure (in Brisbane), encloses a small side yard, the
ground level of a verandah (my house has 2 storeys), and is attached to
a double garage. It's not as nice as the first enclosure as it has no
grass (as yet). I'll try to organise some photo's and post them.

I also chanced across this website that may offer some additional ideas
(http://www.cat-world.com.au/cat-worldenclosures.htm).

If anyone has any questions though, don't hesitate asking.

Dewi.

I remember you! Welcome back.

So sorry to hear about the loss of your loved ones. It can be so very
painful when they leave us.

Welcome back Dewi! I still remember that lovely picture that your brother
made for me for fundraising. It's nice to see you around again.

Hi Dewi, nice to meet you.  Don't think we've met before, as I only
just joined RPCA in the last year or two.  I am owned by Francesca a
two and a half year old female brown tabby and her kitten, Nina who is
now two.  I adopted Francesca a little over two years ago, not knowing
she was a pregnant teenager as it were, but her kitten was so cute, I
kept her, too. Francesca was a successort of Isadora who went over the
Rainbow Bridge in March 2004. Panther, of blessed memory crossed the RB
this past April.

We've built up such a history here now that a few years on sabbatical
hardly seems noticible nowadays.  If you hadn't said anything, I would
have just thought, "Oh, it's Dewi." :)

I'm sorry to hear about Monty and Tink and Mango.  I did like your
kitty stories.  You might remember  that I put Tink down as a "kind
cat" in a cat superlatives list I posted a few years ago.
Dewi - 19 Jul 2006 10:31 GMT
Ha ha, Tink, kind! She was the cheekiest rat bag who caused me no
amount of stress. She had the personality of a rebellious teenager.
Holidays cut short because of her dissapearing; late nights stressing
and teary as she refused to come back for dinner (knowing full well
that she would be showered with hugs and kisses when she sauntered in
at 3am). Having said that, when she died there was a bigger sense of
loss as she was such a character. Actually, to be honest, she had
finally mellowed in her middle age.

However I must have missed that post of cat superlatives as I don't
actually remember it!

Wow, this is quite a list! I can't believe Ollie had already gone missing
by 2002, I thought that was more recent.

I'd like to add a few here:

> Big cats:
>    Jen's Muggles

>    TJ's Dusty

The Samazon!

Bonnie and Clyde

> Genius cats:
>    Liz's Trinket
>    Mwrenn's Crash Shed
>    Reggie's Hale Bopp
>    Susan's Chester

Smudge, if I may say so myself. (OK, you all might think she's a bit
stupid to get trapped in a garage. I think she gets into all this trouble
because she's so curious, and that's because she's smart! Too smart for
her own good - can't just sit around watching the world go by like my
neighbor's cats who never do anything. :))

Sadly, not any more. Roxy has decided that she wants to imitate Licky
and be mean and annoying to Smudge. So they're not really pals anymore. :(

They are characters in Shakespeare's The Tempest.

Obligatory trip report: I was in San Francisco on business last week,

Yeah. She's smart, combined with extremely willful. When she wants
something, she will not stop until she's either manipulated the handy
nearby human to do it for her, or figured it out for herself!

Smudge is the indoor/outdoor cat, and I'm sure it doesn't hurt. But she's
always had a longing for the outdoors, even before I adopted Roxy (back in
1998). She used to escape out the front door every chance she got. One
reason I adopted Roxy was in the hope that if she wasn't so lonely inside,
she might not care about going out. And she did get less lonely, which was
nice, but still wanted to go out. It's just in her genes, apparently. Roxy
and Licky don't seem to care about the Out at all.

LOL!!! Does that make her fearless, or just weird? :)

Thanks Tak, that made me smile and tear up.  There are so many lost
friends in there and so many memories as well.  Please keep this one,
but maybe make an updated one as well.  Please?

That's a good list. I wonder how much of it has changed. There are
definately a lot of memories in that list.

Thanks for posting it again.

Dewi.

I don't know if you were still posting when I started reading RPCA.
Right now I'm not keeping on top of all the posts here, but I do try
to read at least the first post in a thread, even if I don't respond
to everything.

I have a female cat named Oscar who drove me crazy recently when her
paw was injured and I had to medicate her and keep her confined to the
bedroom.  She seems very well now, though, and isn't overgrooming her
paw anymore (which is what caused all the damage, licking because her
paw was irritated).

Hope to see further posts from you.

Welcome back, Dewi! I'm so very sorry to hear about Monty, Tink and
Mango. You and your DH take such good care of your kitties, building
them enclosures.
Best wishes,
Polonca and Soncek

belated welcome back, Dewi, and our condolences for your losses. When
you last posted here, I was owned by Frank and Nikki, but they both had
to be PTS last year. I now live with two youngsters, Miranda (Russian
Blue) and Caliban (brown tabby moggy).
