I've been using the Fresh Step and altho I like it, now that there are 3
in the house (Rex, Loki & Loki's maMA) I've decided to switch to the
Tidy Cat for Multiple Cats.

There was some discussion awhile back about the difference between plain
Tidy Cats and the Tidy Cats w/crystals. I haven't been able to find
those posts.

Could someone who uses either post here and give me opinions as to why
you like either??

Thanks

I don't use either of those brands, but I highly recommend any brand
with activated charcoal in it. The carbon adsorbs (not absorbs) odors
and locks them in for good. I believe crystals are made of zeolite,
which also adsorbs ammonia, etc.
Our favorite litter has just been discontinued (EverFresh with carbon)
so we're looking at alternatives.

Well, I had to look up "adsorb", as I'd never heard that word before.
Interesting. How is that a better way to cut down on odors than
*absorption*? Just curious.

I looked it up in Webster's 20th Century and they had the same definition.

Adsorption chemically bonds molecules to the substrate surface.
Absorption is merely mechanical, so it's easier for molecules to escape.

I just *knew* that Doctor Victor (PhD in Chemistry if I remember right)
would have the answer!  I was wondering myself.  Thanks, Victor!

Chemical Engineering, actually. I remember the first time I saw the word
adsorption, I thought the teacher didn't know how to spell. ;-)

I remember the word adsorption from my days in chemistry. I have a B.S.
in the field.
But I can't remember what it meant. Blame it on aging.

Sorry, Victor.  Didn't mean to slight your degree.

No apologies needed, there is nothing wrong with Chemistry. :)

When I started working at an aerospace company, I actually thought
that my boss was really confused when he talked about the "attitude"
of the satellite.

Yeah.  Turns out he was right.  Oops.  Just one more reason aerospace
wasn't a good fit for me.

And while I do not remember what the subject was last time, this is at least
the second time you have improved my English vocabulary.

I have mentioned that I envy those with good language skills.

I changed my major in college from Mathematics to Accounting when it became
apparent I would never meet the foreign language requirement.  Particularly
since they insisted on German, French or Russian.

Later learned that my dad managed to grow up in Canada without ever managing
to learn French.   Its a type of learning disability.

So absorption is more like wrapping it up and adsorption is more like glue.

I think a good example is to think of absorption as a sponge. It will
take in liquid, but it will give it right back easily. Adsorption is
more like litter. You can get the water out, but it will take some
effort. :)

And why would you want to do that with litter? LOL

My favorite seems to have been discontinued, too - at least
I can't find it in any of my regular supermarkets, anymore.
Fresh Step Scoopable Cedar, which I've used for several
years.  (It IS expensive, though - now I'm suddenly
"retired", I'd be happy to find something cheaper, if it
clumps well and has good odor control.)

I only have *one* cat but I used to use Tidy Cats Scoop for Multiple Cats.
It worked fine.  Then I switched to their *clumping* litter; love it!  I
tried the crystal type when it was on sale and Persia used it but I could
tell she didn't like stepping on those big chunks.  Now I use the equivalent
of Tidy Cats clumping - it's a cheaper brand called Kitty Diggin's.  I can't
tell the difference between it and the Tidy Cats formula; it clumps exactly
the same for 1/3 of the price.  Persia likes this stuff.

ShirleyB -

We have 4 fur-babies and we use the Tidy Cats for Multiple Cats
scoopable and our cats really like it. We tried the kind with the
crystals and it smelled more and the cats would try to move the
crystlas out of the way and just use the regular litter. So we went
back to the regular clumping with no crystals and they were all happy.
I'd love to find the off brand (kitty diggins?) someone mentioned -
where do you buy it????

Good luck!

This stuff really makes me miss Max.

The litter box, like the dry feeder, was for emergencies only.

We are talking months.
(OK weeks.)
But he was 100% on target when going inside was preferable.

Straight-A kitty; No instruction needed. Smarter than most humans for all I
know.

Unless it was really nasty weather he went outside and buried it deep, like
his momma taught him.

Cheers
H.

(Waiting and hoping for another wild genius cat from the forest next door.)

I get Kitty Diggin's at Walgreen's Drug Store in the pet aisle.  It's
virtually identical to the Tidy Cats Scoop stuff and costs a lot less.

Thanks, Shahar, I'd heard some negative about the crystals brand, that's
why I asked.

If I hear anything about the off brand I'll post it here.

Thx.
